Garmin Mobile XT Software - Now compatible with all GPS Receivers

Updated October 12th, 2007
Garmin have just announced that they were making their Mobile XT software for mobile devices compatible with all GPS receivers. Mobile XT was originally released in 2006 and was locked to the Garmin GPS10x Bluetooth receiver.

While this is a nice way to tap into the rising market of GPS enabled devices, the hardware lock has been transferred to the microSD card on which the software ships, meaning the user will have to remove the (likely larger) card already inserted in his device to run Mobile XT. We'll see how many users are ready to get over this inconvenience to use this software that is more advanced than the one on the nüvi AIOs. You can use this thread of the "PDA Navigation" forums for user reviews and to discuss.

Updated January 7th, 2007 - More GpsPasSion members have received their copy of the MobileXT bundle and Semsons were kind enough to send me a test version, so we're now getting some detailed feedback. No surprises with the MobileXT software as the final version is close to the latest version of the public beta and forum member "dornier" details his...

... "Pros and Cons" after using it on a T-Mobile Dash/HTC S620 WM Smartphone.

On the other hand, the diminutive GPS10x Bluetooth receiver is turning out to be a very surprising device with a stunning battery life of 28 hours and 38 minutes for a time to power ratio of 1.6 versus the 0.7 of the Globalsat BT-359. Significantly better than the 22 hours announced by Garmin and that had prompted me to speculate about a new version of the SiRFstarIII chipset, could it be the "premiere" of the combined GPS/Bluetooth SiRFlink chipset or of the SiRFstarIII/LP ? The software appears to be close to the final beta that Garmin made available and the GPS10x receiver is tiny. A test unit is on its way to me, so we'll soon see how the 22 hour battery life claim plays out.

Updated September 12th - The GPS10X has now been officially announced by Garmin on their site and it does indeed have the powerful SiRFstarIII chipset on board for a better overall user experience compared with their previous generation chipsets. The question is how are they getting 22 hours from a SiRFIII chipset, as that would require a huge 1900mAh based on the requirements of the latest single-chip SiRFstarIII chipset used on the...... Globalsat BT-359, .maybe they've moved to the yet unreleased SS3-LP version that was launched at 3GSM, something lo look forward to ! You can use this this discussion thread started by MIKE for more pictures and to discuss.

Posted 07/26 - After making a beta of the new "Mobile XT" software available a couple of months ago (see below), Garmin are preparing a new Bluetooth GPS Receiver, the GPS 10X, a slick device that recalls the Globalsat BT-359...

Some concern about the chipset inside though as the preliminary manual available on the FCC's site specifies "12 channels", no trace of the SiRFstarIII "20 channels" or "high sensitivity", a term Garmin generally uses when they rely on that chipset. Still let's hope the performance is improved compared to the weak GPS10 (see this article).
