Updated February 1st, 2007 It's been about a year now since we started collecting POIs (Points of Interest) in the www.POInUSA.com section of the forums and it's time for a collective "pat on the back" since we now have a total of 125 Custom Collections. Thanks to all those who share their interests and time by making these POIs available and to those who download them and then update/add POIs they've spotted on the road. If you feel like starting your own custom collection, you'll find help in the Suggest a "collection" section. Last but not least, a special thank you to jlb who is keeping things organized. Happy trails !
Posted May 22nd, 2006 - POIs (Points of Interest) are a GPS Assisted Navigation "hot topic" and many users base their choice on the number of POIs claimed by a navigation system...only to be disappointed down the road by missing stores or inaccuracies and generally resort to checking the adress before heading out instead of using the POI as their destination There is a fix..."custom POIs"...
...
Most manufacturers of GPS systems have now "opened" their software to allow users to import lists of custom POIs put together by people who have a particular interest in that type of POI, antique shops, REI stores, Panera Bread Stores, etc...The idea is to start with a list -> forum members download it and drive around with it -> add POIs or correct existing ones by posting a message -> the "manager" updates the file. This has worked well in France where www.POIenFrance has more than 300,000 POIs collected over the past two years, let's see if www.POInUSA.com can do as well...or better, the existing list of 30+ POI collections here certainly bodes well ! POinUSA works for "English speaking" POIs of course, such as Canada or Australia.
