GPS PDAPhone - MWg Zinc II with SiRFstarIII : GPS Testing in NYC
Posté le 08 octobre 2008 à 13:07:00 par gpspassion. EN - PDA + GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated October 8th, 2008
GPS PDAPhones with a SiRFstarIII chipset (still the best performer as seen here) are very difficult to find in the US. The major player is Eten, with its Glofish series, but they are hard to find and Eten has no presence in the US, so service and tech support can be problematic. MWg (website) have released the Zinc II in the US and it has a full SiRF III chipset inside. They have offices in the US and so tech support and warranty service is readily available. The Zinc II is currently being sold by Expansys and is priced at $499.99.

Paul took the MWg Zinc for a spin in the financial district of Manhattan, one of the worst places on earth for GPS reception and pitted it against the iPhone 3G. As expected the Zinc II performed significantly better, but more surprising was the accuracy of its tracks compared to previous tests carried out in Manhattan. GPS keeps getting better ! More Details and charts in this topic of the "PDAs and PDAPhones with built-in GPS" forums.

Updated May 16th, 2008 - HTC launched the Touch Diamond GPS PDAPhone in London on May 6th and in Paris on May 14th, where I got a chance to "spend some time" with it and found it to be a very impressive device : form factor, razor-sharp screen and packed with features. This fourth member in the "Touch" family of PDAPhones after the Touch, the Touch Dual and the Touch Cruise uses the integrated Qualcomm GPS module with off-line AGPS...

... so performance should be on par with previous models, decent for driving, less so for pedestrian use compared with SiRFstarIII based PDAs.

The Touch Diamond is generating quite a buzz among GPS fans as it is rumoured to ship with a new version of the elusive TomTom Navigator software that TomTom had seemingly discontinued. Unfortunately HTC are apparently leaving it to the mobile carriers to choose to include it or not and it will not ship on the "naked" device. You will find a full summary on the TTN7 situation on the Diamond in this topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums.

Updated January 23rd, 2008 - The highly anticipated "baby brother" of the TyTn II, the "ultimate" PDA (see full review), the HTC Touch Cruise has arrived. The sliding keyboard is gone but so is the bulk and weight and it gains an FM Tuner and a "touch" (think iPhone) screen. While it impresses at first, it turns out to be a "compromice" device between a mobile terminal and a phone and will likely not appeal to those who favour one or the other and particularly the first category. You can head over to the HTC Touch Cruise - Testing topic in the forums for some gps performance...

... and battery life tests as well as some picture comparisons with the other HTC devices and the Eten X600.

Updated November 25th, 2007 - The HTC TyTN II/ATT Tilt had been highly anticipated ever since it was first heard of under the code name "Kaiser", the King ! On paper it has it all, a tilt screen, 3G+/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, a GPS module GPS with A-GPS, a 3MP camera, all in a very compact format. We put its various features to the test in this article to see if it lives up to its code name and how the GPS performance of the Qualcomm gpsOne compares to the reference SiRFtarIII chipset used on other GPS PDAPhones...

...

Updated November 7th, 2007 - The glofiish X800 is Eten's third generation GPS PDAPhone after the GPRS G500 in early 2006, the Edge/WiFi X500 in the fall of 2007, followed by the M700 with keyboard and X500+ with VGA in early 2007. The X800 boasts improved data speed with 3G+/HSDPA and retains all the previous enhancements, WiFi, VGA screen. The M800 will be the keyboard version. GPS wise, the X800 is of particular interest due to the first appearance of SiRF's ultra low power SiRFstarIII-LT chipset. We'll have to see how much of an impact this will have on battery life, a sore point of these feature rich devices. In the meantime, you can join this topic of the PDAPhone forums for pictures and comments......

Updated October 10th, 2007 - Those who keep an eye on GpsPasSion Live will have noticed that the much anticipated HTC TyTN II/ATT Tilt (codename: Kaiser) has come in for testing. On paper it looks like the ultimate mobile device with 3G+/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, a slide-out keyboard, a foldable screen and of course a built-in GPS module.

No SiRFstarIII standalone chipset as on the Eten or HTC P3300, but instead the gpsOne module from the full Qualcomm third generation platform, the MSM7200. It comes after the MSM6250 used for the Siemens SXG 75 with weak GPS and the MSM6275 used for the HTC P3600 with somewhat improved GPS performance. Not only does the Kaiser have improved accuracy...

... but it has 7 day offline AGPS for 10 second fixes in the morning ("warm fix" equivalent).

We'll look at GPS performance in detail in the full review, but in the meantime you will find some first test runs for TTFF, battery life, data speed, camera and geocoded pictures, in this topic of the "PDAs and PDAPhones with GPS" forums.

Updated November 11th, 2006 - As can be seen in "GpsPasSion Live", the Eten Glofiish has come in for testing and we have some first GPS performance comparisons with the Mio A701, the current GPS PDAPhone leader in that area. The results are good and...

Updated October 30th - Eten have just announced the glofiish X500 GPS PDAPhone with SiRFInstantFix AGPS, Edge and WiFi. This is Eten's second GPS PDAPhone after the G500 released earlier this year (see the full review) and it joins the ranks of the "converged" devices with the HP hw6915, the Mio A701 and the Fujitsu Loox T830, see the PDAPhone with GPS Comparison.

I had access to an early model with a non-finalized ROM for a few hours and before some more detailed testing in the coming days with a shipping model, here is an exclusive preview article with pictures and comments.

Updated 09/07 - HTC have just announced their first line of PDAs and it includes the P3300. It appears to be an interesting entry in the GPS PDAPhone market that currently includes (in order of appearance): HP hw 6515, Eten G500, Mio A701, HP hw 6915, Loox T830.......

It should be launched officially in Madrid next week with a European roadshow to follow. I'll include it in the GPS PDAPhone comparison I'm finalizing these days, but in the meantime here is what can be said based on the specs, SiRFstarIII with SIF, Edge, TomTom Navigator v6, etc...click here for more.

Updated 07/13 - The highly anticipated Fujitsu Loox T830, the first GPS PDAPhone with 3G and WiFi, has just come in for testing in the GpsPasSion "labs". You can click here to catch up with my first steps with this exciting device.

Updated 05/04 - Convergence devices like PDAPhones or GPSPDAs have been gaining a lot of attention lately with the apparent demise of "simple" PDAs but how about taking it one step further with GPSPDAPhones ? The HP hw6515 and Eten G500 paved the way and now comes the Mio A701. The 6515 was the first with AGPS, the G500 was the first with SiRFIII and the A701 is the first with SiRFIII and AGPS, SiRF's InstantFix announced in...

... January. Naturally I was excited to see how it performed in the field so I put the A701 to the test with our homebrew "side by side" comparisons. Cick here for detailed comments, comparisons and pictures...

Posted 03/15 - The Eten G500 is the first PDAPhone with a built-in SiRFstarIII GPS chipset and it is only the second PDAphone with a GPS after the HP hw6515 released in August 2005 in Europe and late 2005 in the USA (reviewed here). I've been testing it for a few days, mostly looking at the GPS aspects but also at the Bluetoth Stereo A2DP profile in combination with the Globalsat BTH-820.

Good news, in spite of the concealed antenna and contrary to the Qtek G100/Pharos 525, GPS performance is preserved as seen in the side by side comparisons with the Asus A636 (SiRFIII GPS PDA) and Globalsat BT-338 (SiRFIII Bluetooth GPS), references in their format.

Cick here for detailed comments and pictures.
