Updated May 16th, 2007 AIOs, Smartphones/PDAs/PDAPhones with a GPS module, data loggers, trackers..., it's easy to forget that there are still GPS receivers for PDAs and PCs. One of the more recent models is the Haicom HI-505SD an SD based system with a miniSD memory slot and a Bluetooth GPS. I recently received a test model and have started sharing comments and pictures in this thread of the "News" forums.
Updated December 28th, 2006 - Although GPS receivers for PDAs seem to generate less interest these days than AIOs (All in One systems), it's nice to see that GPS manufacturers are still coming up with novel designs. This is the case for Haicom and Spectec with their new SD based receivers...
... The Spectec SDG-810 adds a microSD port to a standard SiRFstarIII SD GPS with a Helix antenna. The Haicom 505SD is a Bluetooth GPS powered via the SD port of a PDA and it can host a miniSD memory card. It also relies on the SiRFstarIII GPS chipset but uses a patch antenna to receive the weak signals sent by the GPS satellites.
Posted January 8th, 2005 - The SDIO GPS "saga" that started in 2003 with receivers that didn't perform very well, continued in 2004 with receivers with good performance but a large form factor (Globalsat SD501) continues in 2005 with the arrival of a new format, an SD GPS with a helix antenna......the first one to be announced being the Stellus SSI-SDIO-1000.
A helix (heicoidal) antenna uses up less space than the usual "patch" antenna seen on previous generation receivers without normally hurting performance. The SysOn CF GPS uses one as well as the new breed of "all-in-one's" in Europe (Navigon bluemedia and Medion 150). More details and links in this thread of the news forums.
