Updated August 19th, 2011
TomTom have just made new maps available, the v875 maps are based on the TeleAtlas 2011.07 release and are available for Europe, North America and other countries like Thailand and the Middle East. These new maps can be downloaded under the 30 day warranty program, under the "TomTom Map Update Program", as a one-time purchase or for people with the "Lifetime Maps" systems.

The good news compared with the v865 release in February is that the latest version of MyTomTom required to communicate with the "Nav 3" models (GO 24xx, 25xx, Via) now allows for map updates. You can use the TomTom v875 Map Release - Teleatlas 2011.07 to discuss them and view the changelog in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Unfortunately the map download module in MyTomTom, the new synching tool for the recently released models, called GO LIVE 1000/1005 in Europe and GO 2405/2505 in North America, still isn't ready so map updates will have to wait. Due to this delay, TomTom announced that the map guarantee period has been increased from 30 days to 90 days. You can use the TomTom v865 Map Release - Teleatlas 2010.12 to discuss them and view the changelog in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated September 3rd, 2010
TomTom have just made new maps available, the v855 maps are based on the TeleAtlas 2010.06 release and are available for Europe, North America and other countries like Thailand and the Middle East. These new maps can be downloaded under...... the 30 day warranty program, under the "TomTom Map Update Program", as a one-time purchase or for people with the "Lifetime Maps" systems.

While the new maps are available, MapShare corrections carried on from previous updares are apparently still being worked on by TomTom so don't worry if you get an error message for now. You can use the TomTom v855 (TA 2010.06) map update - Mapshare ? to discuss them and view the changelog in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated August 18th, 2010 - It's been a few weeks now, but for those who missed it, TomTom released new quarterly maps at the end of June, the v850 maps based on the TeleAtlas 2010.03 release. Due to the inevitable increase in size, TomTom now provide regional cut-outs in Europe. These new maps can be downloaded under the 30 day warranty program, under the "TomTom Map Update Program" or as a one-time purchase. You can use the TomTom Maps v850 - TeleAtlas 2010/03 to discuss

Updated April 2nd, 2010 - TomTom have just announced new models with the "TM" extension, not to be confused with trademark, since TM stands for Traffic and Maps. All the available models can be seen in...... this search on Amazon (link courtesy of offthegrid).

Unlike Garmin they are not (yet ?) making this option available for existing users, probably in an attempt to be different and to acquire new users, but annoying the existing user base is generally not a good idea. More details in the TomTom USA Map Update Service - Lifetime topic of the in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated February 16th, 2010 - TomTom have just made new maps available, the v845 maps are based on the TeleAtlas 2009.12 release and are available for Europe, North America and new countries like Chile, Morocco or the French Antilles. These new maps can be downloaded under the 30 day warranty program, under the "TomTom Map Update Program" or as a one-time purchase. Some interesting information was provided by TeleAtlas on these 2009.12 maps in...... this press release. They mention coverage but also give some insight on how the new data was obtained, with user input being used for the first time. You can use the TomTom Maps v845 - TeleAtlas 2009.12 to discuss them and view the press release in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated November 24th, 2009 - TomTom have just made new maps available, the v840 maps are based on the TeleAtlas 2009.09 release and are available for Europe, North America and new countries like Thailand and the Middle East. These new maps can be downloaded under the 30 day warranty program, under the...... "TomTom Map Update Program" or as a one-time purchase.

The latest v840/TeleAtlas 2009.09 maps are "unified maps" again (same reference for all the range), but with three different versions : basic (ONE units), high-level, premium (with ALG and IQR v2 for GO x20/x30/x40/c50 and ONE/XL IQ Routes units). You can use the TomTom Maps v840 - TeleAtlas 2009.09 to discuss them and view the changelog in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated August18th, 2009 - TomTom have just made new maps available, the v835 maps are based on the TeleAtlas 2009.06 release and are available for both Europe and North America. These new maps can...... be downloaded under the 30 day warranty program, under the "TomTom Map Update Program" or as a one-time purchase.

The latest v835/TeleAtlas 2009.06 maps are "unified maps" again (same reference for all the range), but with three different versions : basic (ONE units), high-level, premium (with ALG and IQR v2 for GO x20/x30/x40 and ONE/XL IQ Routes units). You can use the TomTom Maps v835 - TeleAtlas 2009.06 - Reboot tip topic to discuss these new maps with a tip if your GPS goes in a "reboot loop"!

Updated May 18th, 2009 - The "TomTom Map Update Program" was initially launched in Europe in 2008 and is now available in the USA too so there is no reason not to download the latest v830/TeleAtlas 2009.02 maps made available today by TomTom...... "Unified" maps again (same reference for all the range), but with three different versions : basic (ONE units), high-level, premium (with ALG and IQR v2 for GO x20/x30/x40 and ONE/XL IQ Routes units). You can use the New TomTom Maps v830 - TeleAtlas 2009.02 topic to discuss these new maps.

Updated March 6th, 2009 - Still no news of a US launch of the "TomTom Map Update Program" that lets users subscribe for one year of map updates at a discount (about 60% of the current price of an update) but European users are making good use of it with two map updated released since the program was launched in September...

The latest update concerns the v825/TeleAtlas 2008.10 maps, "unified" maps again (same reference for all the range), but with three different versions : basic (ONE units), high-level, premium (with ALG and IQR v2 for GO x20/x30/x40 units). You can use the New TomTom Maps v825 - TeleAtlas 2008.10 to discuss these new maps.

Updated September 23rd, 2008 - As we had sensed a few weeks ago when TomTom released the v725/v810 maps at full price, they had to come up with a new policy to allow their users to have up-to-date maps at a reasonable price. This has now happened (Europe only at this point) with the TomTom Map Update Service launched concurrently with the new v2.4 version of TomTom HOME...

Under this new policy, users will be able to subscribe for one year of map updates at a discount (about 60% of the current price of an update) the condition being that they have the latest maps when they subscribe. If they don't they will be able to purchase them at a discount ranging from 10% 50% to 85% based on the "freshness" of the maps. Not as good as Navigon's FreshMaps ($79 for 12 updates over 3 years) but this is still a good offer, more details in this topic in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums to discuss.

Updated May 7th, 2008 - TomTom have just made new maps available for purchase via download, the v720 maps for v7 GPS systems and the v805 maps for v8 GPS Systems (i.e. the GO 730/930 at this time) both based on the TeleAtlas 2008.01 release. Likely due to the extra IQR/ALG data in the v805 maps, they are priced higher than the v720 maps : $130 vs $100 for the maps of North America. This new release confirms that TomTom are now releasing maps on a quaterly basis......, good news on paper, except that they do not offer any discounts for regular buyers and Mapshare updates likely start from scratch wich each new map release, defeating its purpose. With Navigon's FreshMaps 12 quarterly updates over 3 years priced at $80, it seems TomTom will have to make adjustments to their map update program...

You can use this topic in the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums to discuss.

Updated February 18th, 2008 - It's this time of the year again and TomTom are releasing new maps both in Europe and in North America. The new v715 maps are based on the TeletAtlas 2007.10 Multinet release and some initial feebdback in the forums indicates that are there some "good changes" in the US maps...

... Here are their respective topics in the www.GOtomtom.com forums : European Maps and North American Maps. As a side note, Google Maps are still using the 2007.7 relase for Europe so our offline systems are more up to date than the reference online mapping service!

Updated April 18th, 2007 - It seems like 2007 has barely started...although we're into Q2, and TomTom are already releasing 2007 maps via their "Map Center" section. They are TeleAtlas maps dated 2007.01, likely meaning January, indicating a shift from quaterly updates to monthly updates. Even better, lucky TomTom users in the US and Canada can get these maps for free. New maps don't mean that all the existing problems have been fixed though, in fact the 2006.10 update reinstated old problems that had been fixed previously, so feel free to share you experiences with these new maps in...... this thread of the "Mapping" forums.

Updated December 23rd, 2006 - Yet another update, the new maps are in fact the latest 2006.10 maps that TeleAtlas released to their customers barely a month ago. TomTom's time to market is quite amazing based on the usual constraints ("crunching" and testing), but that's good news for the end users provided no errors have slipped by......You can use this thread to discuss.

Updated December 22nd - Here is an updated thread to discuss the new maps and where longtime (#125 from 2003) forum member and new GpsPasSion Team member cagavula shares his first impressions and tries to sort through the versions......

Updated December 21st - The new maps are now available for purchase on the TomTom USA website as well. They are labelled v6.65 and the price is announced at $50 although it seems to vary based on when the navigation system was bought, my GO910 seems to be entitled to a $0 upgrade DVD ! You can use this thread of the www.GOtomtom.com forums on GpsPasSion to discuss.

Updated December 11th, 2006 - TomTom have just released new maps, both in Europe with the 2006.7 TeleAtlas set and in the USA with the 2006.6 TeleAtlas set. While the TeleAtlas European maps are considered equivalent to the Navteq maps, the perception has been different in the US, with Navteq maps having the edge overall as discussed here. The TeleAtlas 2006.6 maps have been announced as bringing major improvements, possibly because they are the first maps that include the GDT data......that TeleAtlas purchased last year, and cgavula's first feedback is certainly encouraging...

Updated December 12th, 2004 - "raaaaaa" has started a discussion thread in the forums to discuss the new maps...

TomTom and TeleAtlas USA have just announced the release of new maps.

The good news is that these new maps will be made available for free to all existing TomTom USA customers. What remains to be seen is whether they will fix the unacknowledged but crippling routing problems that have been discussed at length in the Navigation Software Forums.

There's also a mention of "...image-attributed coverage, making the map display look more natural and offering a more true-to-life experience to the user...", which is rather enigmatic! A mixture of vector and raster maps seems unlikely though.

Updated 06/16

A happy end to this "saga", TomTom are offering a massive 50% discount on the "Mouse" bundle, the Bluetooth bundle and the software to all the applicants that were not selected! Very Impressive!

As for the GpsPasSion team, it is happily testing TomTom USA, stay tuned!

A little tidbit, the map "cutouts" for the entire US.

Updated 06/02

Well it appears that TomTom USA is getting in touch with the people who volunteered to help but who weren't selected, kudos for taking care of this and "throwing in" a surprise!

The full press release for the launch of TomTom Navigator USA is here

Updated 05/22

I bumped into one of TomTom's founders at a PDA gathering organized by my friends from PDA France in Paris last night and we had a long constructive talk about the situation.

As some have suggested in their comments, their US team is ramping up right now and they are quite overwhelmed for the time being. Clearly the resulting problems should not be passed on to the people who volunteered to help and she's going to ask the US team to notify people who applied and were not selected. Stay tuned...

Updated 05/17

I would to like to apologize (and TomTom USA would be well advised to follow suit) if you signed up for this trial and never heard back as many have reported.

It took me about ten emails to find out that my own application had been overlooked although I had been told I would be part of it. Makes you wonder, eh!

Again, sorry for wasting your time with this. The good news is there are already great programs in the US such as CoPilot, Intellinav (iGuidance, MyNavigator, Routis), Mapopolis, PocketMap Navigator or SmarST Pro to help people get where they need to go.

TomTom Navigator, the undisputed market "king" of GPS Assisted Navigation on the PocketPC in Europe is coming to the USA!

To get ready for the release, TomTom are running a "US-Based Field Test" from May 5th to June 6th (at least).
