Updated November 17th, 2010
The groundbreaking Delorme PN-60w + SPOT announced earlier this year is now available. This combo brings together a handheld GPS system with mapping capabilities and a one-way satellite "modem" to send text and GPS updates from anywhere in the world.

A test unit made its way to the "GpsPasSion Labs" last week and it's been put to the test in a variety of environments, from the open roads to dense redwood forests via urban environments. Overall it performed very well, allowing for seamless updates via email...or Facebook. The ability to type actual messages and to interact with the SPOT adds tremendous value to the already unique SPOT Messenger concept. More details and comments in the [TOPIC] Delorme Earthmate PN60w + SPOT : Reviews topic of the "Live GPS Tracking Systems" forums.

Updated January 7th, 2010 - Delorme and Spot have just announced an exciting new product combo, the Earthmate PN-60w + SPOT Satellite Communicator, a pairing of Delorme's handheld GPS (see the PN-40 review) and of SPOT's uplink to the Globalstar worldwide satellite network (see the SPOT Messenger review). This will allow users to send text messages regardless of where they are located...

..., a definite improvement over the pre-programmed messages of the Spot Messenger. The problem of the lack of feedback likely remains though due to the one-way link to the satellite.

The Delorme PN60w takes after the PN-40 with increased battery life and a new color. For the first time Delorme will be making worldwide maps available too versus the North American coverage they were providing up to now. The Delorme PN60w and SPOT Satellite Communicator combo won't be available until the spring so we'll see how it behaves in the field before we pass judgement, battery life being a potential issue, but it's interesting to see Delorme, a historical GPS software player get the edge in the handheld market. You can use the Delorme partner with Spot : Earthmate PN60w topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated January 14th, 2009 - When Delorme announced the Earthmate PN-40 last June, they promised it would be faster than the PN-20 thanks to its "dual-core" architecture, actually the ST Micro Cartesio platform already used successfully by Garmin on the nuvi 2x5 and Oregon families. We were eager to verify that claim and indeed the PN-40 is fast, making it a pleasure to use. Add to that its support of satellite pictures, a unique...

... feature among the current handheld GPS sytems, access to many online maps and you've got a serious candidate for anyone on the market for a handheld. Find out what Paul has to say about it in his Reviewed - Delorme PN-40 Handheld article.

Posted June 25th, 2008 - Delorme have just announced the Earthmate PN-40 that follows in the footsteps of the PN-20, Delorme's first attempt at a handheld GPS. The big news is the speedier operation, an aspect the PN-20 was criticized for. This is likely courtesy of the new STMicro Cartesio platform......, already used very effectively on the new Garmin nüvi 2x5 series. Availability is planned for the fall, so let's stay tuned for more, in the meantime you can use this topic of the News forums to discuss.

Posted May 4th, 2007 - Delorme's long expected PN-20 handheld unit - it was first mentioned in January 2005 - was released earlier this year and we've been discussing it in the [TOPIC] Delorme PN-20 thread. This handheld is unique with its ability to display road, topo and aerial maps, but no option to import maps...... yet.

It also stands out with its use of an ST GPS chipset but it had some "drifting" issues at first that have been fixed with the v1.2 update that we're discussing here in the forums.

Posted April 25th, 2005 - Delorme have a successor to the Earthmate called the LT-20 and you can read about it on the Delorme site and discuss it here in the forums. It is a USB mouse GPS designed for use with laptops and is based on a new GPS chipset by ST Micro Vespucci...

... so I will be testing it and adding to the GPS Chipset Comparison article. Another GPS, the PN-20 was announced at CES, likely a personal navigator with a screen, but few details are available at this time, so let's stay tuned for more...

One of the original non-standalone receivers comes back in its 3rd incarnation...... (if memory serves) and of course we're a long way from the first and second versions.

Gone are the proprietary protocol, the bulky form factor, the need for batteries, etc... What we have now is basically a USB "mouse" GPS with the latest SiRF IIe/LP chipset, also found on the Emtac Bluetooth GPS, the Holux CF GPS, the CoPilot Sleeve, the Fortuna PocketTrack and the Fortuna GPSmart (in order of "appearance").

The price is very competitive at $99 and availability is announced for mid-march. You'll have to wait until the early summer to use it with your PDA though, either with dedicated connections cables and battery packs or the bluetooth docking station.

Anyway, it's good to see an established player of the field keep up with new advances in the technology!
