Sports GPS - New Garmin Edge 800 for Cyclists: Sleek and Powerful !

Updated September 14th, 2010
Here comes the Edge 800 for cyclists, Garmin's third generation Edge system after the Edge 205/305 in 2006 and the Edge 605/705 in 2008.

While the Edge 205/305 were little more than a Forerunner 205/305 watch modified for bike use, the Edge 605/705 added map support and now the Edge 800 provides the full GPS experience with a touchscreen, road guidance and full compatibility with Garmin's large map database (road, topo, Bird's Eye, etc...) in a form factor billed by Garmin as "smaller and sleeker than the Edge 705"! You can use the [NEWS] Garmin launch Edge 800 - sleek and powerful in the "Sports GPS Systems" forums to discuss.

Posted July 21st, 2009 - Well maybe "powering" is not the exact term but based on the current results of the Team Garmin leaders on the Tour de France race, their Edge 705 certainly isn't hurting them and apparently helped finetune their training. Garmin France was kind enough to invite some of us to visit the Tour de France during the...

... rest day and we were able to spend some time with David Millar, Bradley Wiggins and the "Directeurs Sportifs", Matthew White and Lionel Marie. David Millar explained (video in French) how he used his Edge 705 "Team Garmin" GPS and also what it had changed for them, mainly knowing what speed they were doing and where. More comments and pictures in the Garmin Edge 605 / 705 - Bike GPS with Maps topic of the "Sports GPS Systems" forums. Good luck for the podium guys !

Updated November 19th, 2006 - The new models that had been previewed on the FRWD site earlier this year are now available. The GPS recorder/receiver is more compact and the W series comes with a wrist display for easy performance monitoring. You can use this thread of the forums to discuss...

Updated March 6th, 2006 - Thanks to the arrival of the skiing season, I've been able to put the FRWD hardware and software I was sent in the fall to the test, right at the foot of the Mont-Blanc! A stylish spot for a stylish and very efficient bundle, click here for the review...Posted October 27th, 2005 - Now for something a bit different with the novel solution offered by Finnish company FRWD. No GPS assisted navgation here, but rather GPS as part of a full kit to log and analyze performance. To achieve this, the FRWD Recorder Unit, includes a GPS Module (uNav chipset), an altimeter/barometer and a heart rate monitor. This is reminiscent of the Garmin Forerunner's and Navman Sport.tool's with more features......, but the main difference is the softare available to make best use of the data. For real time monitoring, there is the Mobile Player for S60 smartphones (Nokia 6680 for instance) and the Replayer PC Software lets you get the lowdown on your performance.
I have received a test unit, but we'll likely have to wait for the ski season for some live feedback, in the meantime you can catch some flash animations on their site and discuss in this thread of the forums.
