Geocaching and GPS : Garmin launch OpenCaching.com

Updated December 9th, 2010
As could be sensed when Garmin launched the Chirp Beacon in October, they were getting serious about geocaching...this was confirmed earlier this week with this post on their blog : Geocaching free for all: Garmin® launches OpenCaching.com to announce the OpenCaching.com website.

While not a complete surprise, it does look like a bold move when a site like geocaching.com "owns" the market with its 1,253,033 caches worldwide...and a $30.00 premium membership. Garmin's idea is different, they want to make it an open and free platform with APIs and sharing using the Creative Commons license. A first look shows a very streamlined site that will certainly encourage newcomers to get started. You can use the [NEWS] Garmin launch OpenCaching.com topic in the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Posted May 4th, 2010 - On May 2nd 2000, to celebrate the end of SA, Selective Availability that degraded GPS accuracy to about 100 meters versus 10 since, Dave Ulmer hid a...

... box and made a note of its GPS position. On May 3rd he published it on the internet (on Usenet), the first geocache was born, and the rest is "history"...

Five years ago for the fifth birthday there were about 160.000 geocaches in more than 200 countries, as this is being typed there are 1.054.425 caches and between 3 and 4 million geocachers! You can use the Geocaching and GPS without SA are 10 ! in the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated 09/10/2006 - While GPS is mostly used for road guidance, there are many alternative uses with Geocaching being one of the more popular ones around the world particularly in the USA with dedicated sites, tools, meetings, etc...too early to tell whether the same will happen with "geoSquishing" ;-) What is "geoSquishing" you may ask, well...

... it's the art of "squishing" a landmark between your fingers or arms, a tall order that bigs4321 shares with us in this thread of the "Miscellaneous" forums.

Posted 05/03/2005 - Thanks to Habot for reminding us in the forums that geocaching is now 5 years old..."On May 2nd, 2000 the first geocache was placed by Dave Ulmer in Oregon. Dave placed a geocache to celebrate the end of "jamming" (Selective Availability - SA) and on May 3nd, he published this information on Usenet : geocaching was born. Today there are over 160,000 caches in over 200 countries."...

...

How time flies and with SA we likely wouldn't be here discussing all things GPS!
