TomTom's IQ Routes/HD Traffic data sold to Police - Official Statement
Posté le 28 avril 2011 à 18:37:00 par gpspassion. EN - General News

Updated April 28th, 2011
TomTom had a rough week with the publication of disappointing financial results and downgraded prospects and then having to explain themselves (official statement) on the reported sale of IQ Routes data to the Dutch police that they used to "optimize" speed controls.

While it doesn't look good to be selling crowd sourced data to have the police use it "against" these very crowds, the bottom line is that users of TomTom systems didn't "opt out" to withhold it when they started collecting it in 2006...with the promise that it would be used to "improve future TomTom products" and that TomTom owns that data and are free to use it to maximize their profits. You can use the [NEWS] TomTom sells speed data to Dutch Police topic in the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated December 5th, 2008 - TomTom have just announced the upcoming launch of their Online Route Planner, think Google Maps with a twist, i.e. with IQ Routes, Mapshare and HD Traffic, the latter in...

... Europe only for now. This is clearly a showcase for their technology, but this will also let anyone plan a route before heading out to see what the traffic is like or figure out when it's the best time to drive out, so it's a "win-win" situation.

It's a closed beta for now, so it seems a bit curious that they should be communicating about it, but that's given me a chance to put it through its paces and verify that it indeed offers some interesting information on the Silicon Valley roads I'm familiar with. Head out to the TomTom Route Planner - IQ Online Planning topic in section of the forums for screenshots, and to see how to get one of the invites I was able to secure.

Updated June 15th, 2007 - With version 7, TomTom are launching a groundbreaking concept, interactive map updating that works as follows : an end user corrects a map error on his TomTom AIO, connects it to his computer via TomTom HOME and all the corrections are uploaded to TomTom who can then broadcast them to other end users......

Sounds interesting ? Then catch up with this preview of how MapShare works, with some comments and suggestions to make it work to its full potential.

Updated December 12th, 2005 - Hadn't updated this news item for a while but there have been some interesting developments at TomTom concerning optional maps lately, first with the availability of full downloadable country maps via...

... TomTom PLUS and now seamless maps of Europe (a GO700 exclusive up to now) on a 1.5Gb SD card; you can read the full release here. Hopefully seamless maps of the USA are next.

Posted 08/05/2003 - Keeping busy at TomTom! This time they're launching an interesting Downloadable Maps offer. These maps of Europe are specially designed for vacations and business trips. If you own TomTom Usa and are flying to the French riviera for a vacation or to Berlin for a business trip..

.., just download the map 26Mb/$40 for the former and 6Mb/$20 for the latter. There are maps for all the main tourist areas and for European capitals. See the complete coverage.

Excellent idea! Europeans will be wanting an equivalent for the US now ;-)
