Update for Mio Cx20 series : TeleAtlas 2008 maps with new MME Interface
Post on 04 February 2010 at 16:13:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated February 4th, 2010 It's generally good news when a GPS maker makes new maps available for users who invested in an expensive system several years ago, but the new C-Series Map Update for North America should be looked at closely.
For a start it's not free at $60, unlike the similar (identical?) update for the Moov series last summer, it comes with TeleAtlas 2008.10 maps (TomTom are already using 2009.06 maps) and it will change the "user interface" to MME. This means that the powerful iGO 2006 based MioMap 3.3 software is getting replaced by the ex-Navman software. A move that didn't sit well with the Australian and European users last year. You can use the Mio C-Series Map Update for America available topic started by tourguy in the "Mio AIO Forums - www.mionav.com" to discuss.
Updated June 10th, 2009 - The new Mio Spirit GPS systems will soon be available, but in the meantime Mio are staying busy with the Free 2009 Map Update for the Mio Moov...

TomTom GPS Add-Ons : Tripmaster and Offroad v3 for Navcore 9
Post on 02 February 2010 at 16:04:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated February 2nd, 2010 TomTom still haven't reinstated their SDK program, but new tricks have been found to make "plug-ins" work with the latest Navcore versions, currently v9.
Longtime forum member Roussillat has taken advantage of these finds to release Tripmaster v3.1 and Offroad Navigator v3.0 to respectively let TomTom users enjoy a full trip computer (still missing by default except on the Rider) and navigate to waypoints with raster map backgrounds. You can use the Tripmaster and Offroad Navigator v3 work with v9 topic in the www.GOtomtom.com forums on GpsPasSion to discuss.
Updated May 11th, 2009 - Many had been enjoying Roussillat's plugins on their TomTom GO AIO, Tripmaster, Offroad, Nmealogger, to navigate towards a waypoint, or record tracks to view a trip on Google Maps/Earth or geocode pictures, unfortunately TomTom discontinued their SDK a couple of years ago and this broke compatibility with most plugins...Good news, developers generally being on the stubborn side, Roussillat was able to make Tripmaster work on TomTom's latest Navcore...

New Mobile Platforms - Apple iPad with 10" and 3G/GPS Option
Post on 28 January 2010 at 18:45:00 by gpspassion. EN - Hardware Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 28th, 2010 The Tech world, and beyond, is abuzz with the launch of the Apple iPad yesterday. It's the iTouch's big brother with a 9.7" screen, 1024x768 resolution, multi-touch, etc...Let's wish it luck even though the concept isn't new, the BeIA based DTResearch pads for instance, or Microsoft's Mira in 2002...
Closer to us, the 3G version will include a GPS chipset, or rather a hosted GPS like on the Qualcomm solutions. The question is whether it will be viable as a GPS platform...probably not for "turn by turn" given its size, but who knows. You can use the [NEWS] Apple iPad and GPS Application topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.
Updated March, 25th, 2009 - So far UMPCs hadn't been very compelling GPS Assisted Navigation platforms due to their size and weight, but this may change with devices like the Viliv S5 and its 4.8" touch screen. It still has much more power than our AIOs from Garmin or TomTom thanks to...

Qstarz launch the 5Hz BT-Q1000eX GPS Lap Timer with vibration sensor
Post on 26 January 2010 at 17:25:00 by gpspassion. EN - Sport Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 26th, 2010 The Bluetooth GPS market is not what it used to be although with the presence of built-in modules in smartphones, but Qstarz (website) are regularly coming out with systems that up the ante. Their latest model, the BT-Q1000eX Lap Timer comes with impressive features, bluetooth, data logger, 5Hz, vibration sensor.
Based on the MTK v2 (MTK 3329) chipset it is capable of logging at 5Hz (5 positions per second) and that makes a significant difference in terms of accuracy as seen in this article. Unlike previous versions there is a switch to choose 1Hz or 5Hz on the fly. It also has a vibration sensor to turn itself on and off when needed. A test unit is on its way to the "GpsPasSion Labs" so stay tuned for more, in the meantime you can use the Qstarz Q1000eX - 5Hz, BT, Logger, Sensor topic in the "GPS Dataloggers and Geocoding" to discuss.
Updated February 13th, 2009 - Qstarz (website), well known for their solid range of GPS dataloggers based on the MTK v1 and MTK v2 chipsets, have just released Qsports, a sports management software suite. Qsports is designed to...

Garmin GPS - New CityNavigator NT 2010.40 Maps Available in America
Post on 21 January 2010 at 13:04:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 21st, 2010 One year to the day of the first map update made available under the nuMaps Lifetime program, true to their word, Garmin have released the fifth installment in the series, the CityNavigator NT 2010.40 maps. These new maps could either be based on the Navteq Q3/2009 or the Q4/2009 release and are only available for North America for the time being. Actually Europe has yet to see the 2010.30 maps...
The CN NT2010.40 maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.40 Maps - Released 01/2010 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums to discuss.
Updated November 20th, 2009 - Garmin have just released the fourth quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.30". These new maps are only available...

Destinator GPS software : V9 now available - First Review
Post on 19 January 2010 at 16:16:00 by gpspassion. EN - Software Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 19th, 2010 The Destinator GPS software was relaunched in June last year (see below) and it is now available as Destinator v9 for Windows Mobile and Android Smartphones, with an iPhone version in the works apparently.
They have a trial version and long time forum member "rem" seized this opportunity to try it out on his Tilt 2 (HTC Touch Pro 2) WM Smartphone. Unfortunately it didn't meet his needs and he came up with a list of Pros and Cons, the latter outweighing the former, with lockups being the main problem. You can read his report in the Destinator 9 for WM and Android - Reviews in the "GPS and Mobile News" forums.
Updated June 4th, 2009 - We hadn't heard much from Destinator lately although the software can still be found on some entry-level systems. A far cry from its claim to fame in late 2001 as the first "turn by turn" navigation system for mobile devices, i.e. PocketPCs. They also had some early wins in the AIO market with Packard Bell or Acer but for some reason, they faded, while Garmin and TomTom took off...

GPS for Bikers - Garmin announce Zumo 665 with XM Radio and 3D
Post on 15 January 2010 at 16:17:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 15th, 2010 Garmin took advantage of the recent CES Tradeshow in Las Vegas to announce a new entry in their Zumo range of GPS Systems for bikers, the zūmo® 665, to be available shortly for a hefty MSRP of $1000!
The new zumo 665 clearly takes after the zumo 660, released in 2009, but adds the GXM40 XM antenna for weather and traffic information as well as digital radio. It also keeps the 3D Buildings feature introduced on the nuvi 765 but not offered on the current nuvi 1xxx range. You can use the New zumo 665 : 660 with XM Radio topic of the "Garmin Advanced Navigation Systems" to discuss.
Posted April 29th, 2009 - Although the Zumo 660, a widescreen GPS designed for bikers, was announced in early Januray it still isn't available, but thanks to forum regular SergZak we can peruse through its full manual hosted on the FCC's site...

TomTom START launched as EASE in America - GPS made..Easy ?
Post on 11 January 2010 at 16:47:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
TomTom used the CES show to announce the TomTom EASE, an entry level GPS designed to make GPS...easy. TomTom's interface had generally been viewed as being pretty easy as it was but they are likely trying to conquer markets that had resisted so far.
The EASE is known as the TomTom START in Europe, a name that would have worked in the US too it seems, and it's been out since October. The US version adds TTS (Text to Speech) to its features. The START doesn't seem to have done very well in Europe so far, possibly because it comes at a price similar to the ONE IQ Routes (ONE 140 in the US) and has a "dumbed down" interface that notably lacks Traffic information and POI alerts, although a workaround was found. Let's see how the EASE does, in the meantime you can use the [NEWS] TomTom EASE - GPS made Easy ? topic of the www.GOtomtom.com forums on GpsPasSion to discuss.

Delorme partner with Spot for Earthmate PN60w with satellite uplink
Post on 07 January 2010 at 13:34:00 by gpspassion. EN - Handheld GPS Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 7th, 2010 Delorme and Spot have just announced an exciting new product combo, the Earthmate PN-60w + SPOT Satellite Communicator, a pairing of Delorme's handheld GPS (see the PN-40 review) and of SPOT's uplink to the Globalstar worldwide satellite network (see the SPOT Messenger review). This will allow users to send text messages regardless of where they are located, a definite improvement over the pre-programmed messages of the Spot Messenger. The problem of the lack of feedback likely remains though due to the one-way link to the satellite.
The Delorme PN60w takes after the PN-40 with increased battery life and a new color. For the first time Delorme will be making worldwide maps available too versus the North American coverage they were providing up to now. The Delorme PN60w and SPOT Satellite Communicator combo won't be available until the spring so we'll see how it behaves in the field before we pass judgement, battery life being a potential issue, but it's interesting to see Delorme, a historical GPS software player get the edge in the handheld market. You can use the Delorme partner with Spot : Earthmate PN60w topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.
Updated January 14th, 2009 - When Delorme announced the Earthmate PN-40 last June, they promised it would be faster than the PN-20 thanks to its "dual-core" architecture, actually the ST Micro Cartesio platform already used successfully by Garmin on the nuvi 2x5 and Oregon families. We were eager to verify that claim and indeed the PN-40 is fast, making it a pleasure to use. Add to that its support of satellite pictures, a unique...

Garmin's ecoRoute goes HD with an ODB II connection
Post on 05 January 2010 at 14:53:00 by gpspassion. EN - General News Source : Gpspassion
Updated January 5th, 2010 With responsible driving bound to become more than a buzzword in the upcoming years, Garmin are ramping up the ecoRoute feature of their GPS systems with the ecoRoute hd module to become available in March.
After a good response when it was launched, the ecoRoute feature stopped generating much discussion, possibly because it didn't provide very useful information on the road or really helped to have a "greener" driving. The raw engine data that will be available via the ecoRoute hd module could change this. However it seems to be limited to the new nuvi 1xxx range and had a steep MSRP of $150. You can use the Garmin® ecoRoute™ hd via OBD II connector started by jotne to discuss.
