Navteq hosted an "Ateliers de la Navigation" event in Paris nearby the Champs-Elysées on September 14th to have their customers meet the press and to explain their own work methods. A very interesting event overall and we'll focus here on the new Garmin units that were on display, click here for PartII - Garmin zumo 550.
PART I - Garmin nüvi 660
660 vs 360 : more screen "real estate" !
Bad news, the nüvi's satellite screen status that went missing on the C550 is not back on the 660
nearly everything fits on one "page"
Good news, the nüvi's "one tap" 3D navigation to 2D North Up map that went missing on the C550 is back
The sleek "drop-in" mount of the nüvi is back, note the GTM20/21 connector that plugs directly into the mount
The 660 and 360 compared under all angles
The 660 does indeed have a larger 16/9 screen than the GO910, at 4.3" vs 4"
Three words, "I want one" ! Seriously, the 660 made an excellent first impression, that wide and bright hi-resolution screen is something to see and unlike what happened when TomTom increased the resolution with the GO910, the interface remains very "snappy". I was happy to see the convenient nüvi 3D Navigation to 2D/North Up map mode that went missing on the C550 come back and I suppose we can do without the satellite status screen, that isn't back, at least in this version. Updated 09/22 : the version shipping in the US has that screen enabled, it can be seen >>here<<
The sleek nüvi mount is back too and you can just drop in the 660 when you get back to your car without having to unplug the GTM20/21 RDS/Power cable in the back.
Availablility is announced for October in Europe and possibly earliuer in the US.
On the next page we take a look at the zümo for bikers -> >> LINK <<
