| I am in the market for my first GPS and am wondering if the Garmin odometer problem effects the Etrex H or is it only the HCX models? |

gpspassion, Thank you for the information. I was all set to buy a Ledgend HCX but when I found out about the odometer problem I put the purchase on hold. To me it seems that other than this problem, the HCX units are the best compact gps available, or are there any other brands you would recommend? |

| GPS SW Version 2.60 is now available on Webupdater. When I updated, the update hung on 'Transferring Data'. After a minute I switched off and on and when I checked the system it had Software Version 2.50 and GPS SW Version 2.60. |

Based on some preliminary testing (short walk including a footbridge with blocked view under a railroad track), the odometer problem seems to have been fixed :

Now that 2.60 has improved the Odo action (thanks GpsPassion), can I ask for a quick review of the low-speed performance ? The forum topics on the chipset (in the HCx) talk a lot about it working very well at high speed - but less well at a walking pace. This forum topic - on the H series - does not seem to find a problem with the low speed performance.
As my usage of the HCx will be 80% at kayak speed (3-12 kph) - with a premium on discovering whether I am making progress against a tide/current or whether I am paddling fast (or just kidding myself) - the low speed behaviour is quite critical.
Will an H-series show me as 'stopped' if I drop below a certain speed ?
Thanks for any help |

Following your question I paid particular attention to that problem and the speed goes to 1kph maybe almost as soon as you start moving, I was not able to keep at 0 even walking as slowly as I could.
Did some more testing this weekend on a bike ride and the odometer is definitely looking good :

Many thanks - that seems to remove my last excuse (for not buying one) |

Hi,
As has been reported it would appear that the "odometer" issue has been more or less fixed with 2.60/2.60 firmware. It's still not perfect but a hell of a lot better than it was.
I went for a 10 mile walk a couple of days ago. To be exact 10.5 miles which with lunch took 4hours 9minutes. Both my GPSMAP 76CSx and Legend HCx track logs gave identical figures.
The 76CSx still gives more accurate figures on the "trip computer" page. The HCx shows mileage about 5% higher than it should be and an extra 6 minutes stop time.
The HCx is more sensitive than the 76CSx and acquires lock faster particularly if I am moving. Once locked I have never seen either unit lose lock whilst out on a hike.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the comparison, yes it seems it's going the other way around now, used to underestimate, now it overestimates, still, close enough.
Strange that your Vista HCx should acquire more quickly, I'm getting similar TTFF, provided I hold the 60Csx straight to place the helix antenna in the position it was intended, with both receivers laying flat, the patch antenna of the Vista wins. |
