Page 44 of the users manual shows that procedure for 'Disabling Offers' and specifically refers to coupon offers coming onto the screen. I don't actually have the device though to actually check and several reviews mention being upset that there are ads at all so I thought I'd put it put it out there.
Regardless of that I hope they come out with a fix for all these problems. This is rather un Garmin like. A few more bad reviews on Amazon already and people saying they just got it so...
I really wanted to try this out.

I wouldn't think so, based on the description that's probably to turn off FCD (Floating Car Data) feedback. Advertising doesn't seem to be the biggest problem of the 1690s at this point and on the "lifetime traffic" deals on the 765 no one has really complained about it.

By doing this you get a notice that "disabling position reporting will turn off traffic information on your device." So it appears that if you want the traffic information you'll have to put up with the ads.
In my earlier post I mentioned how the traffic service did not report a highway closure that in fact had been there for hours. On my way home from work the traffic icon was red showing a heavy backup on I-95 north for 28 miles (35 minute delay) and in fact there was no back-up, I did 65 mph all the way home. Beginning to have my doubts on how accurate this traffic is. I'm going to test with the MSN and the Clear Channel traffic network over the next couple of days. Tom Tom Go 740 was accurate again showing no delay. |

| I have learned over the years I can't trust the traffic on GPS's much, sometimes it's right on sometimes it's not even close. I have a 1690 and every morning if I go a certain way to work that takes me on a highway that is a few blocks from my house it always shows yellow on that highway for several miles and there never is or has been taffic as long as I have lived in this area (28 years)on that highway. The best traffic I have used was on the Dash Express it was actually pretty accurate. |

Today I ran my 1250T which has both clear channel and Navteq traffic on the same receiver side by side with the 1690. The 1690 had the traffic screen and 3 minute delay showing for 23 miles of my trip, and guess what, it was clear sailing (65 mph). The 1250 traffic icon remained green correctly for the entire trip, however the last 6 minutes of the trip the icon was gray.
It seems to me that at 7:00 am to 8:00 am the 1690 traffic probably was right on, but I went into to work at 10:00 am. Comparing the times of this report to yesterdays it seem that the 1690 is several hours behind, if that could be. Oh and as a side note the TomTom was right on again. Too bad their screens get washed out in sunlight, otherwise I definitely would be a faithful TomTom user. |

| I contacted Garmin support about the issues. I am looking to replace on of my 2 Garmin units. I got a dumb response, but will follow up tomorrow. I have owned all 3 traffic systems to date, and had mixed reviews. If the quality of traffic is poor, then what good is it. |

I contacted Garmin support inquiring about the pop up traffic ads on the 1690. I don't know about anyone else, but my 1690 pops up twice the amount of ads than my 1490, 1250t or 765t. I figured that the 1690 being a paid service after 2 years would eliminate the ads, but according to Garmin's response it don't appear that way. We are stuck with the pop ups, and unlike the other traffic receivers, you can't add a paid service to eliminate them, as the other traffic cables don't work with the 1690. Garmin is missing the point on this issue, and I'm sure that it will hurt their sales of the 1690, judging by how many people are annoyed by this. Here is Garmin's response;
Dear Chester,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this. The ad's are based on the free traffic that comes with the unit. It is the same as the one that comes with the 765 (unless a paid subscription was applied to the unit). The ads do not get in the way of navigating through the unit and are based on the free service. You can turn them off but it also turns off the nuLink services. I hope this helps.

I feel Garmin should let people know that the 1690 has "FREE TRAFFIC" and it is not part of the nulink service. I wonder than if I opt out of the subscription after two years, would I still get traffic, I doubt it, so than we are paying for it. I sent a follow up e-mail to support asking this and we will see what the response is. I'll keep you posted. |

I returned my 1690 to Amazon (bad touchscreen that Garmin said they had never heard of before) and purchased the 775T instead (since I travel a lot in Europe) and, according to some reports, it has a lot more memory than the 765T along with its MP3 and audiobook player. Not sure if I'll miss the gas prices and weather. We'll see. It should arrive tomorrow.

Here's and update on the nulink service traffic. I spoke with support just moments ago and it is now clear that the pop up ads are here to stay. The answer I got was you get the Navteq traffic service which is ad supported as part of the nulink service. Therefore you are paying $5.00 a month for the ads. Make any sense to you. There is no way to add a non-ad supported service.
According to Garmin ALL Navteq traffic is ad basedand only by adding the Clear Channel traffic will get rid of the ads. 1690 owners do not have this option as the GTM power cables are not compatible with our units. So in essence, if traffic is the most important feature you are looking for in this unit be prepared to tolerate the annoying ads, since you are going to be paying $5.00 a month for them. If the Google search and weather are just as important, buy a Tom Tom Go 740 live, you get the same services, NO AD traffic, which I also found Tom Tom Traffic to be more up to date and accurate, but will cost you twice the monthly subscription price.
I could tolerate the ads if they were as infrequent as the ones on my free traffic service included with the 1490T, but like I said before, the ads are more frequent on my 1690. I myself have a problem paying for something I can get for free, so it looks like the 1690 will go back. I hope Garmin didn't invest too much money in the development of the 1690 as it looks like it may be a flop like the voice recognition units of the 800 series. Way to go Garmin, keep peeing off your customers with your dumb ideas. Glad I don't work for them or I'd be worried about getting laid off when sales begin to drop.
As a side note, I found that as far as the screen flickering problem, units with a serial number ending in "27172" are still affected. This unit was made October 14, 2009, two days before the problem was corrected. |

| Something very annoying is happening with my Favorites in the 1690. I used to have a c580 and a lot of Favorite/Waypoint entries. I transfered these to the 1690 using mapsource but the 1690 does not show all the favarites at once. In the c580 I could always scroll through every single waypoint and have access to pick it at any point. It seems that the Nuvi is only showing me the 40 or 50 closest waypoints to my location and in order to view the other ones I either have to do a search by name or delete some of the closer waypoints to see a few more. If I am going to take a longer trip and I forgot the name of the waypoint that is stored in the GPS it becomes very difficult for me to find it!!! |

| That is different. My 1490 lists all 276 of the favorites I've installed, as does the 760. It does however only list the first 50 or so built in POIs and Custom POIs which I think is the same across all the Nuvi lines. |

| in response to ChrisBWJ's post on the 1690, I think many are staying away from this unit. I returned mine for two reasons, one being the annoying traffic ads which are numerous, and I refuse to pay for someones ads. Secondly, with no capability to add FM traffic, if the nulink service fails as MSN is, you're stuck with a $500.00 unit that isn't capable of traffic. Not a chance I'm willing to take. |

Garmin must agree with you. New firmware was posted today which addresses that very issue:
quote: Changes made from version 2.30 to 3.00:
Decreased the frequency that advertisements are displayed. Changed to hide old advertisements that could still be showing when the user left the map page.[/b] Enhanced the functionality of the ecoRoute application. Improved map performance to prevent a shutdown after hours of use. Fixed an issue that could occur when selecting the next leg of a flight. Fixed an issue where attempting to enter coordinates to save a favorite would not work properly. Fixed shutdown that could occur while viewing certain help categories. Fixed a shutdown that could occur when rating POI?s. Fixed a compatibility issue with CityXplorer London maps. Fixed an issue where Ciao was not showing the proper guidance to register the unit. Added support for improved audio clarity and volume. Fixed shutdown that could occur in the picture viewer when a large number of pictures were loaded. Improved function of pre-recorded voice in certain languages. Fixed a shutdown that could occur when pairing with certain phones via Bluetooth. Fixed issue that could occur when transferring a large phonebook to the device. Added the underscore character to the keyboard to allow entering emails containing that character. Fixed an issue where certain cities were not available for selection in Weather, World Clock, or Flight Status. Improved the appearance of the roaming icon. Fixed an issue where searching for cities 10,000 or more miles away would not show their distance correctly.

| Hi - In the UK we only get 1 year free subscription to NuLink. Does anybody know if there is a way to receive live traffic updates if I don't renew the NuLink subscription after it expires or is Garmin subtly forcing my hand to pay circa £100 annual subscription? |

| That's one of the issues that has been hurting the 1690 in Europe I think, no compatibility with the RDS receiver of the other nuvi 1xxx models (hard to believe it's hardware related) and no low monthly subscription after the one year bundled service expires, if memory serves it's less than GBP100 though but rather €80, vs $5 in the US. |
