@Moderators Please update page 1 to reflect the name convention for 2x0/5 7x0/5 1xxx 24xx and 3xxx and others as one call up this page when traveling and has to update the GPS and have to hunt for the information to what naming conventions are available. The reference to page 3 could be a one liner on page 1 as is \map and models bmapsupp.img can be renamed as GarminSA32.img or what ever is required! |

Installing City Navigator Europe 2012.20 on Nuvi 770
I am not sure if this is the correct forum but my query relates to published queries in April/May 2010. I have downloaded Western Europe 2012.20(2.72Gb)to my computer since it was too large an update to be accommodated on my Nuvi 770. I only need the UK and some EU countries on my GPS but there were no limited update options that included UK. Is there a way to identify and upload individual countries? If not, could I delete the North America 2011.20 information (1.61Gb)and install the European info? Could I then reinstate the NA data at a later date.
I have not yet used the SD card slot. Could I purchase an SD card (4Gb?) and move the US info to the card? Does the 770 read directly from the card if required?
TIA

You should be able to place the NA maps on an SD card. The files you looking for on the 770 are any that start with gmapprom. The NA map should be named gmapprom1.img, as far as I know.
Since you already downloaded the full Europe 2012.20 to your computer you could always leave the NA maps where they are and only load the pieces of the Europe maps that you need. To do this you would need a program from Garmin's website called Mapinstall (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 ). With Mapinstall you can load and use it to pick just the Europe regions you want, create the mapset and copy the created file to you Nuvi. At the very worst you may need to delete the old Europe maps (gmapprom.img) but it sounds like you should probably be ok. Note when I say "delete" I really mean to copy the file to your PC until your sure it's the correct map file.
If you use the Mapinstall option and don't delete the old Europe maps, go into Tools - Settings - Map - Map Info on the Nuvi and delete the checkmark in the box beside the Europe maps entry. This will insure your only using the NEW 2012.20 maps for Europe.

Thankyou for your help. I transferred the NA maps to an SD card then used Mapinstall to load the limited European regions that I need. (and deleted the checkmark on the 2008 maps as advised). It did take hours, with only one computer crash!
Can I delete the old Europe maps and reinstall the NA ones? Would I remove only the .img file? If not, would the NA ones be accessible via the SD card and work at normal speeds?
I apologise for all the questions - but delving into the inner workings of a Nuvi is new to me (and very interesting)
Thanks again |
