On the way home I set the Nuvi 5000 to 3d, autozoom and normal detail (this is antithetical to what I prefer.... North up, most detail and autozoom disabled ). As I thought, the experience seemed very much the same as my Nuvi 650. Movement, especially when going around a cloverleaf, was very jerky. However, I didn't really see much if any lag in the pointer position. Screen refresh was just slow.
But if fluid 3d movement was what I found important, I wouldn't have sold my TomTom 920T. It was much smoother than either the Nuvi 650 or 5000. |

| Thanks for checking. Clearly you can live with a jerky 1Hz refresh rate, although with a higher refresh rate, the better the chances of accurate positioning when you take a quick glance. In any case a 4hz rate won't hurt and Garmin are often criticized for that compared to the competition so it's really mind-boggling that they've implemented this on their entry level units and not on the high end 5000 model, or on the 860 although that remains to be confirmed. |

I don't disagree with that... look at my first post in this thread:
"I spent a good while playing and have to say that I was not at all impressed. It has a very sluggish feeling when drawing the screen; dragging the map around is really slow with detail set to most. Zooming in and out was also really slow."
But I wanted a Garmin with a big screen, routing, no autozoom, custom avoids, etc., so I will have to accept the 5000's shortcomings. And as I said, I don't used 3d mode all that much. I really liked the TomTom 920T but it had one quirk that really bothered me over time. You can't set different levels of map detail, so if you zoom out to (perhaps) 0.3 miles, all the little roads disappear. On the Nuvi with detail set to Most, little roads disappear at the 1.2 mile scale. |

If anyone is still following this.... today I had my first crash. Driving along, not navigating a route, I tried to zoom in and nothing happened. None of the other screen buttons were responsive either. So I pulled the plug from the cigarette lighter, plugged back in and the Nuvi came right back up with no problems. I'm not too concerned about this since it's the first crash in around 3,000 miles of driving. FWIW, I was viewing the US Topo 2008 maps at the time. Sure beats my Mio c520 with its daily crashes.
BTW, some of you may have seen my complaints about the hair-trigger power button on the HP iPAQ 310 in the AIO forum. Well the Nuvi 5000 is the exact opposite. First, the power button is recessed deeply into the case. Second, it requires a LOT of pressure to activate (you have to grasp the whole unit and push hard). Then you also have to hold it down for perhaps 5 seconds before it responds. This is pretty excessive for a unit which doesn't even have a battery; on the iPAQ the power button is a real problem since it's virtually impossible to carry it around without accidently turning it on and discharging the battery.
It's a minor thing on the 5000, but I wish they hadn't made the button so hard to push. I know that many people like Garmin's behavior of immediately starting up when you turn your car on (this is major complaint about TomTom units in that forum), but there are times when this isn't desirable. For example, if you park in a downtown garage where there's no signal, it's really better to wait until you're outside before booting the GPS. But there really isn't any practical way to do this, short of unplugging, on the 5000. You need a "grip of death" on the unit while you hold the button down for 5 seconds, maybe more. |

I went to the diagnostics via the trip computer screen. I selected GPS and two line items appeared. The first line is stationary and reads:
Firmware Version Bravo 3.0H Software version
The second line has a value that continually changes. It reads:
C/NO 38.10
and the value seems to be counting down.
Hope this helps. Stephen R. |

| Thanks for checking, not sure what to make of "Firmware Version Bravo 3.0H" as it could point to the bravo/STM platform, but they are currently at v2.55b. Could you look in the standard system/about screen where the Software version and GPS FW are shown ? |

Here is what the System / About screen has: Nuvi 5000 Software version 4.00 Unit id: (can't share this) Audio version: 2.20 GPS SW Version: 2.90b
There is no listing for FW Version on this screen. |

| Thank you, that 2.90b is certainly quite intriguing and points to the STMicro Teseo platform as the STM Cartesio is only at v2.55 for now. Have you run it through the WebUpdater recently ? |

If this type of detour function is important to you DON'T upgrade the firmware to 4.10.
Somewhere after 3.60 (where I noticed the detour function working like above and 4.10 it disappeared.
It's gone back to the original mode of just picking an alternate route.
No help so far from tech support |

Where is the "advanced detour" setting?
I never changed anything when it appeared in version 3.60. Tech support didn't mention a setting when I emailed them about the problem.
can you post a screen shot? |

Duh!
I found it. tools/settings/navigation - prompted detour on / off
Thanks for pointing out the obvious.
A shame garmin support didn't know the answer to that one! |
