Hello Everyone, New Poster here with a fun story for you.! We got the iway 500C preinstalled as part of a used low mileage Honda CRV we got a year ago.
The guy we bought from, had the car installation done (such that it was removable and had a separate 12 volt adapter etc as well.
However, we had the over heating problems and the unit would conk off when it overheated. ( I did mess with the brightness settings..). Anyways, since this was a bulky unit and we were probably never going to remove it from the car or worry about moisture problems using it on a motor cycle, I opened it up and figured out that I could cut some vents on both sides in the plastic case without damaging the insides to ventilate it, which I did with a Dremel. BTW, that fixed ALL the overheating problems, the unit has worked like a charm other than having out of date maps.
Anyways, long story short, I spent the better of last summer trying to get a map update for it, calling up Lowrance and them telling me that the Q1, 2007 update was sold out and that I was SOL.
Then yesterday, I was randomly browsing and came across the Q1, 2010 update news. All cheered up, I called up Pan Pacific to get the bad news that they were sold out as of last week and advised me that they would not get any more copies of the DVD.
Called Navteq and they pointed me back to Lowrance who told me I was SOL. Based on some other posts I saw elsewhere, I contacted Kenworth dealers and they found one dealer in Canada who showed the DVD in stock.
Ordered it and it is on its way here. Am looking forward to updating it and based on the experiences described here, I do hope the update goes ok.
Much as I think the update is a little pricey, the unit is very well made. I was looking at the Garmins but have to admit for a 4/5 year unit, the 500C does a pretty good job at what it does. It is a shame that Navteq won't continue to sell map updates directly..
Regards
Sunil |

Putting my moderator hat on here people.
There's been a recent increase in posts asking for alternative sources of the NavTeq update from PanaPacific. Seems that it's become scarce or non-existent.
This DOES NOT absolve anyone from copyright law. Just because there are none available doesn't mean you can freely copy or pass-on an update DVD after you've used it. The license is for ONE unit to be updated.
There are rules here on GpsPaSion.com and I will enforce them. Repeat offenders will be permanently banned. Do not ask for or discuss illegal copying or re-use of copyrighted intellectual property. All such posts will be deleted immediately and poster warned. There are no second warnings.

Just a quick update, update worked perfectly. About 5.5 hours later updated the gps ! For those seeking it, the dealer in Canada had one more left. Mine had a neat label! Looked it was pressed, not just burned casually
Thx Sunil |

Hi Bob,
For what it's worth, I contacted Pana Pacific regarding this elusive update and their exact advice was for me to try and buy a used copy off someone since they don't offer it any more. Problem is, there aren't any used copies for sale in North America as far as I can tell! [edited by moderator]
I'm also curious -- if I can somehow find the Q1-2010 update, does it also update the satellite imagery? I'm most concerned with the marine navigation/depth charts & like to run on "Hybrid" mode (Map+Satellite). I bought a 500c that is currently useless to this regard unless I can find the Pana Pacific update, and just got a 600c that does have the depths & contours, but the satellite imagery is horribly outdated. I know it would do wonders on the 500c, but will this update even help me on the 600c or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thanks, THETexJWP

What part of "Do not ask for or discuss illegal copying or re-use of copyrighted intellectual property" do you not understand?
Pana Pacific does not own the copyright and I'd take their advice with a grain of salt. As I've said - it's illegal to use a purchased copy of the NavTeq update more than once. End of discussion.
No, satellite imagery is not updated nor is marine chart info. It's just the NavTeq portion of the on-road routable database and the truck-specific POI database. |
