| A new tidbit on traffic. The unit displayed a warning for slow traffic ahead even when I was NOT following a route. Apparently, when you're on an interstate highway the GPS assumes you won't be turning off of it for a while and gives you the standard traffic warnings. Pressing the traffic icon does not, however, offer you the option to detour around it since you're not following a route. Pretty slick. |

I currently have a Nuvi 265WT, and have been sorely disappointed in the included Navteq traffic subscription in the Cleveland area where I live. The main reason I purchased this unit was to get the traffic, and it is incorrect about 80% of the time or more. I've found the traffic data on my the maps application of my new Android phone to be amazingly accurate, but I can't be playing around with the phone all the time while I'm driving to get the traffic. I'm fairly certain from my research that the Google app on my phone isn't using either Navteq or Clear Channel. So...
Is there any way I can figure out if the Clear Channel traffic in my area is better without actually plunking down the cash for a subscription? I would happily buy it if I knew it were better, but after reading this thread I couldn't see if there was a way to know without the subscription. Worse, if I purchase it and Navteq is the dominant signal in my area, it will probably never even get used. Can I get a refund if that happens?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary |

In retrospect, IMO, I would ditch the idea of FM based traffic altogether. Navteq and TTN (Clear Channel) have their own web based traffic sites. In my area, Clear Channel is just horrible. Even in Las Vegas where Navteq seems to be dominant the traffic leaves a lot to be desired.
There is no trial subscription available with navteq or TTN. Once installed, it's installed and can't be uninstalled on most Garmin devices.
You may wish to consider other alternatives such as satelite based traffic or even google traffic, but even they are not very reliable. |

This morning while travelling I-95 in CT I was comparing my new 1690 to my 765T. I have both Navteq and Clear Channel on the 765, while the 1690 uses the Navteq Live traffic. Now the claim is the 1690 is supposed to have the most accurate and up to date traffic info right? Well it doesn't. The 765T warned me of a serious 36 minute delay, while the 1690 showed a green icon. After sitting in traffic for 15 minutes, the 1690 finally showed a moderate delay of 7 minutes. After 25 minutes, the icon tuned red and showed a 24 minute delay, which by the way matched the delay time showing on the 765T. All in all the delay was about 40 minutes, showing that Clear Channel had the more accurate delay. Now if I was in a hurry, which I wasn't and the reason I decided to test both units, the 765T would have routed me around the delay. One of the main reasons I bought the 1690 was for the fact that the traffic would be accurate which obviously it's not. I only wish I had the option of adding Clear Channel to the 1690, which you can't since traffic cables are incompatible with the 1690. So if you have to choose a traffic provider for the CT area, buy the subscription for Clear Channel. You'll get the most accurate trafiic, and NO DARN ADS! |

| In your area, the Clear Channel was better. Interestingly, while recently in Vegas, i was receiving ads on my 760 which is suppose to be Navteq but in the diagnostic screen (GTM info) three Total Traffic Channels were being used (as shown on the left side). Traffic info sucked. There was a serious accident on Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd and we were stuck for over 40 minutes and my 765 didnt once report the traffic situation, neither did the Sirius traffic in the rental car. |

| I used to have a Nuvi 265T. When using the lifetime Navteq traffic by itself I would always get routed around traffic during morning rush hour. I decided to purchase the Clear Channel traffic subscription to use along with the included lifetime Navteq traffic to get rid of the ads. I live in Portland, Oregon which gets strong FM coverage with both traffic providers. After I entered the activation code on my Nuvi the GTM info page showed my GPS was tuned into Clear Channel and Navteq FM stations on the GTM info page but my Nuvi stopped reporting traffic incidents all together. In morning rush hour traffic the indicator on the Nuvi 265T was always green. I don't think I'd ever waste my money on Clear Channel traffic ever again. It was horrible. |

| I have both subscriptions. Navteq always seems to have double the events than clearchannel, but it seems to have ghost traffic jams. Clearchannel seems better for me, but I'd like to give them some more side by side testing. |
