Smartphone Link is wonderful. It is well worth the subscription cost above and beyond the HD Radio traffic, mainly from a coverage perspective. There is actually traffic content in areas far beyond the signal area of HD Radio. In addition, the HD Radio signal is garbage in some areas. When I am approaching Chicago from the west on I-88, I can be well past the 335 and still not have a HD Radio signal. At that point you are committed to a route and traffic or not, there are limited options. With Smartphone Link traffic you never loose your traffic signal as long as you have a data connection.
I am saying that the traffic CONTENT is hit or miss. I've seen it be very good and I've seen it tell me there is a nearly 2 hour delay where I can't see another car for miles.

Garmin is really overboard. There are just too many models about the same with slightly different prices. It used to be easy. A few models. The 35xx and 34xx and 25xx lines are so alike it is mind-numbing. I look at this site for help and Consumer Reports. CR likes most of the Garmin line.
There are few deals on the high end Garmin Nuvi line. So I wait to make up my mind. |

That would be wrong!
The 25xx has nothing in common with the 34 or 35 xx except parts of the UI. The 34 /35 are close to the same, but one's a 5" on an 11mm thick chasis and one's a 4.3" on an 8.7 mm thick chasis.
If you look at these models, you'll see major differences in the hardware between each of them...

I recently purchased a nuvi 3590LTM and in most respects, I find it to be the best nuvi I've ever owned. However, I have a couple of major concerns about it, which may cause me to return it.
First, since I bought it I found the screen harder to read in the daylight than my old nuvi 1490T. I thought that this was because the screen wasn't as bright; however, when I took a close look at both screens, I didn't see any real difference in brightness. Finally, I just realized that the problem is glare. The glossy glass screen on the 3590LMT is almost like a mirror in the daylight and that's why the screen is difficult to view. I don't recall anyone commenting on that, so I assume that either it doesn't bother most people or most people have found a solution for it. Is the glare something everyone has gotten used to or is there some easy solution to it?
Secondly, I'm in Canada and the traffic receiver included with the unit is the model GTM60. However, it also says Canada 310 on it. I called Garmin about this and the person I spoke to said that, as far as she was aware, as long as it says GTM60, it is the version with the HD Digital Traffic (when used in the U.S.); however, she did not seem to be 100% sure and she had no idea why it said Canada 310. If anyone knows anymore than she did, I'd appreciate getting the information so that I can be sure that I really have a fully functioning model GTM60, as opposed to one that was designed for Canada and therefore lacks the HD Digital Traffic even when I'll be in the U.S.
Thanks for any assistance,

In my experience, with a glossy screen the trick is to place the unit such that the reflection shows the ceiling of your car. The ceiling will be relatively dark and therefore the reflectioins should not be very noticeable. If you have it located such that the reflection shows the view out of a window, it can be hard to read.
So experiment a bit with different mounting locations such that it can be tipped up to reflect the ceiling. I have a 3790 which also has a shiny glass screen and mount it down low. I find it extremely visible in all conditions, but maybe the 3590 isn't as bright? |

Glossy screen definitely reduce usability but still 37xx has better screen then 14xx. Better contrast and better visibility outdoor. Maybe 3590 is not as good? There could be a problem with bigger resolution too, since Garmin doesn't scale view according to resolution.

@Harvey
The 310 version of the GTM60 does indeed work in the US HD trafic markets. It will also work here if and when HD traffic comes to life in Canada.
The screen is very bright on the 3590, but since it is a glossy screen, suffers from visibility in sunlight. I fight with that every time I have the top off in my roadster, especially while wearing sunglasses. It does not however have issues with polarized sunglasses like the 34xx does. It is not as bright as a 34xx either. I believe the screen resolution and backlighting is the same as the 34xx, which has a smaller screen and therefore, better visibility, as you end up with more pixels and lumens per square inch. |

| I did a comparison of my 3590 and 3490 a while back on my blog and it included commentary on the differences between the screens, including photos. You can read it here: http://jkcarp.blogspot.com/2012/02/garmin-nuvi-3590lmt-vs-3490lmt.html |

I'd like to thank everyone who replied for their assistance. It's possible that I'm just more sensitive to glare than some people. I have to admit that I was hoping that there was some easy solution to this problem, but it appears that the only solution is to get used to the glare.
I finally decided that if I'm going to pay over $400 (with tax), then I want a GPS with a screen that is easy to view; so I'm going to return the nuvi 3590.
Thanks again,
Harvey |

Here's what I use on my zumo. Unless the sun is right over my shoulder and shining directly at the handlebars of my BMW, it makes a huge difference.

Thanks Dan and "gordog".
I was tempted to try one of your solutions, and I actually looked at the web sites you linked to; however, I finally decided that I didn't want to start trying to "fix" a brand new $400 GPS. So, back it goes.
I'm going to try a nuvi 2595LTM now, and see how it compares. I know it does't have the HD traffic, but it is about $120 cheaper.
