CPU power worth nothing when source code is awful. Also you should keep in mind, that Garmin since 1xxx series started to use tile-based (like Google maps) drawing, that dramatically decreases speed in some cases.

I just test a 3580 LMT, I believe at Costco the other day. I entered the route from the Costco location from Vancouver to Las Vegas, NV. The calculation was complete in about 30 seconds; however, a messagge popped up that only partial routing is available and the remaining will be shown later, or something like that. I entered the same locations on my 760 and it gave me complete directions in about 42 seconds. It seems clear to me the CPU isn't that much faster, if at all in the newer models.

I first noticed this when I got a 1350 too. But, my observation is that the tile containing your vehicle is drawn first, then the others are drawn afterwards. I think they did this so that the vehicle position would update more quickly, which is something they were often criticized on with older models.
Also, starting with the 1xxx series, performance in 3d view was greatly improved. In fact, 3d view is rendered more quickly than 2d view on the new models. I make my own maps with a very high level of detail and they take some time to update the screen no matter what device I use. But it has been very instructive, since it's like watching the Nuvi draw the map in slow motion.
With these maps, my 3790 literally chokes if I zoom out past .2 miles - it cannot refresh the screen fast enough to keep up with driving speeds and the unit becomes unresponsive. My Montana 600 doesn't have this problem. And my older Nuvi 5000 and 205 also don't have the problem (although they are slower).

My 2595 (similar to the 3580) calculates this route in 20 seconds. I suspect the Navigation settings for the 3580 at Costco had Highways selected in Avoidances.
If I set my 2595 to avoid Highways, the route calculation completes in 58 seconds and says The route is too long. Navigation instructions are added as you approach the destination.
EDIT: I've found the performance of my 2595 (and the 3580 I tried at Costco before buying the 2595) to be very fast compared to thr 1490 I owned previously. |

I always look at the GPS units at Costco and now I see that there is a voice activated Garmin GPS and they advertise "Digital Traffic" feature that is suppose to be 10 times faster than original traffic version. Is there any special problems that the voice activated units have and this "Digital traffic" is it a marketing ploy?

I think "digital traffic" is just a different name for the traditional Garmin traffic which uses the RDS/TMC FM radio system. What you describe sounds like "digital 3d traffic", which is a new, faster system that uses HD radio.

So the Digital Traffic service is no gimmick and is 10 times faster? Is this a lifetime free subscription?

No, as I said above "digital traffic" is just the same old Garmin traffic. "Digital 3d traffic" is the newer, faster version. I have not used it myself, but in theory at least it offers much more bandwidth. But there have been a great many complaints from users of the new traffic receivers, there are several threads on the topic here. But that was when the service was new, so maybe it has improved.

From the www.costco.com website: "nüvi 3590LMT also includes Garmin Digital 3D Traffic which delivers traffic updates as often as 30 seconds over the HD Radio system. That’s up to 10 times more often than other traffic receivers. With Garmin Digital 3D Traffic, you get all the advantages of our extensive Garmin Traffic avoidance system, plus 2 to 3 times more road coverage than our Garmin traffic offering over RDS."
The 3490/3590 come with a GTM 60 receiver supporting HD Digital Traffic (new name for Digital 3D Traffic). The GTM 60 can also be used with the 24x5/25x5 models. See http://www8.garmin.com/traffic/. Here in Canada, HD traffic is not available. Costco sell the 3580, which is a 3590 with an older TMC/RDS receiver instead of the GTM 60.

HD radio system? In other words you need a new radio updated system?

No I think it means that the data is delivered to the receiver over the HD Radio system, like the regular traffic data is delivered over the FM system. You don't need a HD radio in your vehicle in order to receive HD Traffic.
