Have only used it with a route so far but I did notice the map information was rather low key but effective (main roads, parks, etc...), will take a closer look at what you pointed out. I went for a drive this morning with version v6.5.3 and have some updated comments.
Updated comments - version v6.5.3 : 1. Voices are now quite clear and easy to understand
2. There is an overspeed beep (not available on the nuvis!) that I turned off, the red color works for me

3. You can't click on the list of directions to preview an intersection

4. I didn't get any Junction View pop-up, having said that I can't remember if I got some on my 3790 I had for the ride, will recheck
5. I had my iPhone 3GS in the TomTom Car Kit that normally delivers a good accurate position but I noticed the map was rotating when stopped at a light. Maybe it's expecting to get some signal from the compass :

6. I turned off the WiFi connection after calculating the route (iPhone connected to tethered iPad) and it took me to my destination without complaining. |

| To me there is nothing to the competition. I don't know about you guys, but I use GPS the most when in unknown territory or overseas. I see not having the maps directly on the device as a major limitation. I also don't understand why Garmin has ported some very useful functionality like Gas Prices lookup which it has on the Windows Mobile 6 platform of their navigation app. |

There are pros and cons to each solution, "off-board" vs "on-board", we have entire topics about that.
As for "gas prices", dunno, I never found that very useful, I buy gas when I need it and I know which brands have competitive pricing, even abroad it doesn't take long to figure it out. And I'm probably not the only one since this feature has been dropped by all the GPS manufacturers on their connected devices and it's not available on the major smartphone apps (TomTom, Navigon, etc...), either the data wasn't good enough or it was costing them too much, I'm guessing a bit was both.
Took SP iPhone for a little spin today but didn't have any "Junction Views" on my route, has anyone seen them? |

The Junction View popped up 2 times for me today. It does it a little different though, it will pop up twice once about .6 miles before and then again maybe .1 miles before. One bad thing happened today when I was following a route and went a different way then the app said it was having trouble recalculating. A window popped up saying "error trouble recalculating. Would like to keep trying?" with an "OK" button. I clicked OK but the error window kept popping up (4 times) and finally after 3 or 4 miles it finally recalculated the route. It did this 2 different times during the route.
Would really like to have auto zooming and have more zoom levels, doesn't seem to zoom out to far when zoomed out all the way.
gpspassion did you get a chance to use the app when not following a route yet? Just wondering if you noticed how hard it is to read the street names when doing it? |

| Nope, I was focusing on the Junction View, sorry! Can you clarify what you are finding hard to read, ideally with a screenshot? So fat I've only seen major streets and they come out very clearly, see my screesnhots above. |

| @caryrae - So I checked the map without a route and...it can only be viewed in 2D as far as I can tell, and if you zoom in far enough the street names are quite legible. Can you clarify the problem you're seeing with a screenshot? |

There is an update 6.5.4, from the info it seems to fix a few of the other problems people are having.
What's New in Version 6.5.4
•Improved iPod playlist integration •Music fades for voice directions instead of pausing/resuming •Improved interaction with music streaming services and voice directions •Tap turn arrow to hear most recent voice direction again •Choose home address from contacts •Added VoiceOver accessibility support •Fixed bug related to avoiding car pool lanes •Corrected "Doctor" vs. "Drive" bug •Minor bug fixes |

Yes, saw that late last night and updated, will test on the road this week.
Were you able to sort your legibility problem of the map without a route? As far as I can tell we're limited to the 2D display when there is no route. |

| To me it's harder to read street names when not following a route, looks just like a picture of yours on the 1st page. When following a route the street names are bigger and much easier to read. Yeah when not following a route it's only 2D. I don't have the same problem on with the Navigon, Magellan, or Map app on my iPhone 4. |

Yep and when I asked at CES they didn't have any firm plans for anything else at that point.
@caryrae - ok that makes sense and yes SP iPhone hasn't been designed to be used to navigate without a route, 3D would help with that, might come later. |

Another problem is when their map server is down - no maps. I could get to the web site via safari but the iphone app showed no maps or traffic :-(
I expected no maps if I did not have a WiFi or 3G connection, but didn't think about the other end. |

Hadn't thought of that either, won't happen too often hopefully!
By the way, they recently pushed a v6.5.5 update:quote: What's New in Version 6.5.5 •Restored voice instructions over bluetooth and headphones •Further improved car pool lane avoidance
