Al,
Did you find a solution to your audio problem? I now have the same issue where Garmin replaced my Nuvi and now audio doesn't come out the stereo.

I have a retail 760 and a Nissan 750 and like Flip998 have an SX4. Mine was a 2008 model before the navi built-in was offered, so I ordered the housing parts which include the cradle and cables to hook to the existing antenna and to the AUX bus on the Clarion radio in the car (same cradle is used for 750 and 760 models - the SX4 offers a 750 model without MSN Direct and a 760 model with MSN Direct as part of the Technology package). I have found Garmin tech support to be lacking as well, but the Geek Squad at Best Buy has been helpful in suggesting some things to try. My Nissan 750 unit also has the nanny that removes Safe Mode=Off as and option. I'll try and compare the software on the two units to figure out how to re-enable it. On the audio through the radio, here's what I know and what I need your help on.

If you go into Diagnostic mode on the 7xx (push and hold the battery charge status for 7 or so seconds - you may have to unmount the unit to get the battery charge bars to display). Go to Page 2 - Version Information on the diagnostic screen. At bottom of this page hit the "Start Test" button. A "More" button then appears next to the Back and Next Buttons on the lower right. Hit this button and an Inventory page will popup. The factory SX4 unit has two unique settings after PROM2 -

Splash D0825-06 2.0 *OEM_D Nuvi-Wide Suzuki OEM Spl

The first is the POI's for Suzuki delaer sites and the second is the welcome screen. My Nissan has similar.

I have four sources on left:
Speaker - checked on
FM - off
Headphones -checked on
Lineout - off

The key is to set the Nuvi unit which has a radio mute function and pre amp audio output built in to use that method to deliver directions to the external source. Geek Squad thinks the 4th item - Lineout - needs to be set on on mine for it to work with the radio. Finding out how to do that is the million dollar question to be answered. There must be a hidden setting screen somewhere to do this - does anyone have a clue where it might be?

With the recent firmware version 4.0/4.1 debacle, Garmin issued my Suzuki 760 an RMA and I returned it for a replacement. They sent back a retail 760 and sure enough it gave no audio out through car stereo. After pinging tech support repeatedly with the issue they admitted that they had made a mistake and would have to send me out a Suzuki 760.
It seems that the base firmware is different and you can't/they wont send out some sort of firmware patch to enable the audio.
Unfortunately all the "stuff" you see on the mapped USB is not the actual firmware running. It is safely hidden away from the user and updates are only flashed to memory when the boot loader decides that a more recent version is present on the USB mapped drive.
I did a comparison of the retail vs suzuki drive and only minimal files are different. I even copied these across to the retail 760 to see if they enabled the audio - no luck.
Looks like we are stuck with differences between the retail (no audio) and suzuki (no safe mode off) unless someone can find a back door to enable the features.

Could you post a few photos of the mounting hardware in your Suzuki?

Did you try to activate FM transmitter in setup menu?
It should mute internal speaker and activate line out thru the cradle.
Good luck

Hi, just found this discussion while searching how to turn off "safe mode" on my SX4 "TRIPS" (Nuvi 760). I just bought the car (2009 w/touring package) and love the Nuvi. I updated my SuzukiNuvi to SW Ver 4.2 using Garmin updater and did not have any problems with audio or losing proprietary Suzuki features, MSN direct, etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing more on the "Safe Mode" topic and will share whatever I can find out. Thanks!

Just did some testing. With unit in car cradle, I activated the diagnostic mode. I went to the audio settings, which were set at "Speaker" and "Headphone". My unit was putting audio directions through the car speakers with these settings, so you don't need to set output to "line out". You can select the different audio settings by touching the radio button next to the item. I did set mine to "line out" to see what would happen, and the unit worked the same, but after entering diagnostic again, it was set back to "headphone" so the unit appears to choose its own settings. I guess this is a long winded way to say the correct audio settings are "speaker" and "headphone" to receive audio nav prompts over the stereo speakers using the SuzukiNuvi.

Bigbee, when you were installing your Suzuki cradle, did you happen to notice if the Clarion head unit had pre-outs for an amp, or additional(non iPod)aux-in? Thanx!

I am looking for the Suzuki welcome/splash screen to put on my 765T, would it be possible to post the file/image please?

Thanks

I suppose this thread is pretty dead by now - but thought I'd put an update here on what I recently achieved.
With the loss of MSN traffic information I wanted to see if I could hook up a TMC receiver to the Suzuki Nuvi 760 setup.
What I found was this:

  • The old MSN unit used a USB connector to connect to the Garmin cradle.
  • Cutting this cable I was able to test continuity to the cradle pins and found it connected to the standard traffic receiver pins.
  • I got a GTM20 TMC traffic receiver from eBay, cut off the 18 pin connector and connected the two cables (there's plenty on this forum on the connections of the GTM/18pin cable). http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=91718&whichpage=17
  • A bonus is that the GTM doesn't need to be plugged in - it receives power from the Nuvi/Cradle, just the 5 traffic receiver connections are needed (TX, RX, ID, GND, VOUT).

I also had a problem with my Suzuki supplied 760 and found an old stock 760.
People have noted the problem of not getting audio out through the cradle with this configuration as the Suzuki supplied 760 has different firmware to put audio out on cradle pins.

I found (again plenty of information about this on the forum) that if you do not connect the ID pin through to the GTM20 but instead connect a 2.2K resistor to ground, then the unit goes into VIB mode. It still detects the GTM20 but also mutes internal audio and puts it out on the cradle pins along with the mute signal to car head unit. Just what the Suzuki 760 would do.

All in all very happy that I could keep all the nav and traffic features along with bluetooth phone connection to car stereo. As a bonus, with the stock 760 you can turn off the annoying safe mode.

Do you recall the colours that you matched up? Did you cut the MSN connector off from the MSN unit itself, or the Nuvi cable? Eg cutting off the USB connector from the nuvi vehicle cable?

Wow, thanks for responding! Yeah I have a 750 with the Suzuki cradle and cable, it had the MSN receiver and right now I have the VIB resistor mod so it outputs nav audio thru the stereo. But the traffic would be icing on the cake, and I'd love to get it working.

I cut the MSN pigtail off on the box end and the wire colours I'm looking at are off of there. I have a totally trashed Suzuki harness with ripped cradle connector that I suppose I could split the insulation on and see if the colours behind the USB connector match. I've been dying to do this but since the cable is so rare I'm petrified of ruining it.
