The nuvi will not use the SD card memory automatically and it won't use that additional memory for it's internal system usage. It's mainly for storing additional maps, MP3 files and photos you may have. To free up the unit's internal memory, you need to remove unused voices, help files and vehicles as outlined below.

I would also add that "loading up" the Nuvi's internal memory will cause additional issues when updating the maps on this unit. Every new map update is bigger than the last one and therefore you are going to have to be deleting extra voices, vehicles, etc. from the internal storage not adding items to it.

There isn't a lot of things you would need to add to the 1690's internal memory other than voices and vehicles. Most of us delete all of these, other than the ones we are using, in order to free up space on the device. Moving unused voices and vehicles to a backup file on your PC allows you to quickly reinstall them to the Nuvi. As Sergzak points out the MicroSD card can be used to store other items that will be recognized by the Nuvi, although on this model MP3 files aren't one of them as the 1690 doesn't support it. The MicroSD card is an excellent place to store additional maps, custom POIs, and photos for the Photo Viewer however. You could also hold your backup copy of any voices and vehicles you delete from the Nuvi. Although they wouldn't be used by he 1690, they would be handy if you needed to restore any of the to the Nuvi at any point.

Wow! My 1690 memory capacity went from 73MB to 374MB by deleting the unused voice, help and vehicle files.

Some of you might be interested to know that in the UK at least the nulink traffic information on the Nuvi 1690 appears to be more detailed than that provided via FM to the likes of the nuvi 1490T. This afternoon I had the opportunity to use both a 1690 and a 1490T (Both Euro spec.) at the same time.

I checked the traffic maps on both at the same time, both were reporting up to date traffic news. Some of the traffic in central London was in red on the 1490 but yellow/amber on the 1690. Many of the traffic incidents were red on both, and the 1690 had incidents marked that were not marked on the 1490T traffic map. The extra information was verified via the traffic search facility where the extra reports were listed on the 1690 but not the 1490T. Actually it was quite reasuring to know that the paid nulink service appeared to have the more detailed information.

IMO This combined with the better update frequency of nulink over FM and better coverage could probably make quite a difference for navigation through the UK's busy road system.

Always know where you are.

Makes sense, in France the traffic data is more detailed too, thanks mostly to the extra bandwidth that GPRS/Edge brings compared to RDS (FM), we get flow data notably.

Thanks.I thought it was worth mentioning because I've seen the question asked before and as far as I am aware Garmin do not advertise the extra detail over the FM traffic service.

THANK YOU GARMIN!!!

My 1690 is finally working as it should. Now my NuLink re-connects after the unit has been sitting idle for a while. I allowed my 1690 to stay on all day today while running different routes, stopping to work and eat, and when I began traveling again...BAM, the NuLink picked right back up. Traffic, Google, Weather.... it is all there without having to reset or power cycle the unit.

I think this is the one that finally "fixed" my main issue!

Thank you Garmin!! (again).

No stability issues here either, actually it's worked well since I got it in February, can't remember which version it was running at the time.

Mine has been fine too,. Such a shame that they didn't iron out all the problems before they released it to the public.

Is there a way to turn off the map display of all POI icons? I don't think they were there until I upgraded to 3.50 (but there's nothing indicated in the release notes).

Also, is anyone else annoyed by the fact that "Favorites" requires a page down from the initial "Where To?" screen? It's something I use much more often than some of the items that are on the initial screen, such as "White Pages."

If you zoom out, the poi's will disappear. Yes, the location of Favorites should be on the first screen.
