I did contact Garmin by e-mail about this. They told me to do a soft reset and if that didn't work to do a hard reset. I've tried both but my NuLink 1695 is still only able to connect to the internet about 50% of the time. Once it does connect, it maintains its connection until the GPS unit is powered off. I could see this being a hardware problem if my Garmin never connected to the cell network at all, but since it is able to connect at least 50% of the time this sounds like a software issue.

And defective software is certainly possible. I'd still return it for another. I'm sure Garmin will do an exchange.

took it to Canada for the first time. Not sure if this is new info, or it's all the same for 1690. NuLink icon had a roaming sign on it. Worked: google local search and weather forecast. Didn't work: all the rest, including weather radar and traffic. I'm surprised that some features worked and hoped Garmin will not issue me $500K for roaming data plan.
I missed lane assist and speed limit info and realized how much I like to have them on my units.
I also figured that FM traffic (both Navteq and TTN) has coverage for the whole North America, so I had traffic data from my older unit.
One question: my favourites show up as a single list even though I've created several categories. Does it work for anyone? I'm a bit scared to give Garmin CS as given my prior experience, they can tell me that I need safety camera subscription and friction mount to be able to categorize favourites :)

What does a camera subscription or a friction mount have to do with categorizing favorites?

The favorites question came up a few days ago. How many do you have? A minimum 12 total is needed for categories to be active.

FWIW I have been able to find that the 1695 is using a 32-bit STMicro ARM9 processor running at 104MHz, along with a Sierra Wireless AirPrime Q2687 module, the same wireless chip that Tomtom chose for their Renault and Mazda embedded cellular connectivity.

Hardware performance has been ok with mine, wonder if Garmin use a faster ARM11 platform on the 37xx, like TomTom do on the GO LIVE 1000/1005/2505 (USA).
New Tracker Firmware Version shown at CES 2011: I was surprised to see it run some new "tracking" software at CES, version 2.37, but they also had a "normal" 1695 running 2.40...
The Garmin people on the booth thought that this "tracking" version would be made available to people who bought the GTU-10 Tracker so that they could follow it. Looking at the menus it looks like this software also turns the 1695 into a trackable device, although they didn't seem to be aware of this feature...unfortunately the "Tracking expert" was not on the booth so I'll have to follow up with them. Apparently the 1690 will not be getting this optional new software.
Here are the pictures :

Looks like that could be made usable for a smaller fleet operation at a low cost. Keep track of driver's, simplify efficient dispatch, that type of thing. Interesting.

Sotware has been updated to v2.60, with an enigmatic "Added new manufacturing support" improvement...if anyone knows what that means! Have they changed suppliers? Not sure why they would want to mention that ;-)
quote: Changes from version 2.40 to version 2.60: Added new manufacturing support. Changes from version 2.30 to version 2.40: Fixed an issue that could cause certain premium nuLink! services to be unavailable. Updated GPS software to fix a possible shutdown while powering up the unit.

I haven't found any change yet. Like you I'm at a loss what it means, tho I don't think there would be a supplier change. They built the 1695 themselves in their own factory AFAIK.

No luck in getting anything further from Garmin on the latest update. The initial response was "that information is considered proprietary". A follow-up received a generic response.
