PREVIEW - nuMenu : Customize the Menu of your Nuvi
One of the surprises on the Garmin booth at the CES 2011 show in January was the discovery of a new feature that gives users the ability to customize the main menu on the new units that were launched there : nuvi 24xx series and dezl 560 for truckers and RVs. The bad news is that Garmin does not plan to add this feature to existing models, even the high end 3790T launched last summer. This is consistent with the approach they've always had (see [TOPIC] New features on existing Garmin models ?) but I did stress that this was a cause of frustration to users...
I'd brought back pictures showing how the menus are configured but didn't have the detail of all the actual menu choices. A follow-up email got that problem fixed, thanks Jake!
1. Main menu customization : up to 15 icons

2. All the available settings :

Very Nice I don't see Routes as a choice but I do like this system and will be much easier to use. I will get one now since the price is great as well. |

| It's certainly a step in the right direction, but they don't let you drill down deep enough into the menus to make it really useful IMO. |

While looking in the 37xx firmware, I noticed some sort of data structure which I thought were the menu structure. I wonder if I could not change the way things are displayed by playing with it.
The 37xx may not have the customizable interface, but I would guess Garmin is "reading" the menu structure withint the firmware and it may be similar to the 24xx menu structure.
Question: when customizing the menu on the 24xx, does it saves the changes to a file or everything is hidden? I would be curious to see the file structure. |

I like your idea about menu structure. Even more, I can tell that there is no direct coordinates supplied when adding controls (buttons, etc.) to pages. So I do not understand how child controls are layed out on page.
How does this menu structure look like? Did you try to disassemble program code referencing it?

| @turboccc - interesting that you found this. Unfortunately the nuvi 24xx (or dezl) isn't out yet (March/April timeframe) to check for any saved files, I got the screenshots by email from a contact I made at Garmin at the CES. I'm thinking they would be saved in the internal non accessible memory though. |

| Dont't raise your expectations too high. I just saw a bunch of strings. It does not seems to indicate the screen locations or the menu hiearchy. I may have to disassemble the code to find more about this. |
