The long awaited map update is available on the Magellan website. The link for the North American version took me to the site map page. The link for the North European upgrade took me to the upgrade for the North American version. The price is $79.00 with a $20 off coupon code on the page. Nothing so far for the 700/760 models. There are upgrades for the 3000T, 3050T and 6000T.

(The link for the North American 800 now works but the 860T does not work).

EDIT BY GPSPASSION :
To get to the "Magellan RoadMate xxx Software Upgrade Version 2" you need to select your GPS here : http://www.magellangps.com/products/ and then click on "Maps and Software"
Direct link for the RM800 : http://www.magellangps.com/products/mrm_800_v2.asp (currently down)

[MOVED FROM THE MAPS SECTION] 1 Nov '07: Below information was retrieved when looking at the Roadmate 800 options:

The "software upgrade" link redirects you to a page that displays your registered product(s) and a purchase button. The purchase button was not displayed for the unit for which I purchased the European unlock code. I re-registered the unit. When I went back to purchase the software upgrade, the unit was listed twice, once with the European unlock code and once with the software upgrade purchase button displayed.

The $20 discount expires on 31 Dec 2007.

2 Nov: The link is still there, but it redirects to a new page -- they've disabled the ability to purchase due to problems encountered by some customers. If you were able to buy the update, the FAQs page on their website lists multiple questions about installing the upgrade. They say Vista can damage your GPS.

4 Nov: Edited to remove excessive verbage. It's still too long.

Thanks for sharing, I moved everything back here. One more reason not to have upgraded to Vista ;-)

Not easy to get to the update, eh ? I added a little "how to" to the first message.

I read the FAQs regarding the map update process. They don't say anything about removing your password from the GPS, but they do say that the GPS will experience multiple restarts during the update process. When I attempt the update, I'm going to remove my GPS password before I start.

If this is a Vista issue why can't most of us who still use xP get the upgrade??
Does someone have the date of the new maps??

Yes, link still down :-(

I'm pretty sure I saw a link to a page on the Magellan site that had the date of the maps (think it said 2007), but can no longer find it, sorry.

I received the map upgrade DVD today. The DVD label is Q0306_8x0_NA. I take that to mean the maps are from the 3rd quarter of 2006.

Vista is not the sole cause of people's problems. Nor is Magellan. XP users have problems, Windows 2K users have problems. Mac users are not even allowed to try. Please read the FAQs.

(1st post.) I have looked at the FAQs on the Magellan site and have not found what problems other people are having, perhaps I haven't found the correct FAQs. I purchased the map SW update and received the DVD yesterday (11/6). My authorization code is rejected, so I am unable to even start the update. Has any one else had this problem?

The FAQs are on the Magellan website. I get to them through this path: Products page, Roadmate 800 section, Products and Support tab. Direct link is:

http://www.magellangps.com/support/product.asp?prodid=1118

The issue with Mac users is not addressed in the FAQs. It was addressed on the page where one buys / bought the "software upgrade." The page said Mac users would have to send their units to Magellan.

The Vista incompatibility is addressed on the FAQs for some of the unit types, but not all. I would presume the incompatibility exists for all unit types and it's the FAQs pages that are incomplete. The FAQs for all unit types list update problems. The FAQs for the 800 and the 860 appear to have the most entries.

Jimmy101,

I have a Magellan 800 and I purchased the North American maps udate. I too was unable to unlock the maps due to a "not accepted authorization code". I have called 4 separate times only to get the same response, that they will get back to me within 48 hours. To date I have not had any respose. On one of the calls I was told that there was a software problem and that all purchasers of the update were having the same problem. If anyone knows of a way of expediting a soultion, please let me know.

I have had the same problem --on their page they state they are having technical problems with the update. I have repeated contacted their support by phone and by e-mail --- all they say is that they will "escalate" my concern to higher "levels". --NEVER hear anything more. I have enjoyed my magellan Roadmate 3050T but the SUPPORT is non existent. I have requested a refund for the update but get no response. The problem with the authorization code seems to be the S/N # in the map software drops the initial "0" from the internal S/N on the RoadMate.
