Is Magellan quietly preparing the "Black Friday" GPS star of 2007 with the Maestro 1200, after the Finedrive in 2005 and the Mio C310x in 2006?

It might well be even though it is priced at $199 like the Mio C310x last year, but this time it is a major GPS brand and it relies on the same advanced software seen on the previous Roadmate and Maestro models. Hardware wise it boasts a very compact format and uses a Centrality Atlas II platform with built-in GPS.

That is the Friday after Thanksgiving Day in the United States. This is traditionally the first day of the Christmas shopping season and many merchants have loss leaders to get you into the store.

To close the loop on "Black Friday", I found out last year that the reason it is called like this is because it's the day when retail gets out of the "red" with the massive amound of shopping going on ;-)

Back to the 1200, it appears to be operating on a Centrality Atlas II platform with its built-in GPS module. Performance is said to be equivalent to SiRFstarII and in my limited testing of this platform I have found it to be a bit slow, software wise and a bit slow to acquire as well compared to SiRFstarIII systems.

Wouldn't the Mio c230 be better with it's Text-to-speech ability? It uses the SiRFstarIII, has roughly the same POIs and is $199 (or less) too.

Is there an advantage to the Magellan? Is the software much better?

@wonkman;

POI-wise, it is no better than Mio C230. Can't even find most of retail store. (funny, it selling at CC, but there is NO circuitcity on its POI)
There is no AAA thingy, the truck icon is to show your current location.

Centrality seems to consume less battery power, and it is NOT necessary worse than SiRF III, as I have test over the Harman Kardon.

At $199, I will stay w/ Mio C230 though.
One major reason, added POI is searcheable from the main Mio POI directory.

Magellan, on the other hand, is such a pain....
For example, I loaded entire U.S. "Target" POI into the magellan. BUT, it will not not show up from main POI search. If you want to go to a "Target" store, you have to go into several menu and do single search.

Instead simple "point of interest"->type in "target".
you will have to go through "point of interest" -> "my custom POI" -> "target" folder -> search.

If I have to spend $200 for a non-tts gps, I will stay w/ Nuvi 200.

I agree about the c230. But after using TTS, I can't see being without it. Nuvi 200 seems like a nice unit but I need my TTS.

If we're talking about $200 or less Black Friday contenders, it seems there are better choices than the Magellan be it the c230, the TT One or the Nuvi 200.
