This is some rudely thing to do if you can not remove it.
Anyone who have seen this from other dealer.

I'm assuming, since the link you posted is not in english, that by large dealer you mean that some company has Nuvi models for sale that have been customized for them in some way. I believe that Ford and possibly BMW may have such units. I guess if you buy a "branded" product like these I don't understand why it would be rude if it had some customization that couldn't be changed. Isn't that what the "large dealer" would have paid Garmin to do for them?

Since the dealer has altered an original product (I guess they have to open the box, or make Garmin add it), then it's not original any more. Then they should tell so and sell it as an modified unit.
There should at least make a customer option to remove it.

When I bought my last car, there was info from the dealer on the plate behind my license plate.
It did take me 5 min when I got home to remove it. Thats ok

Again, since I can't read the language in the link you provided, I can only assume that whoever the dealer is, they didn't break into the Nuvi operating system and modify it themselves which would be very difficult and probably illegal. So having those icons there is the least of their problems.

The other alternative then is that, like other companies, they contracted with Garmin to produce a Nuvi modified to highlight something for their specific purpose. In this case, the Where To? icons.

If that is the case then the unit is in fact an original Nuvi. You buy an original Garmin Nuvi from a Garmin Dealer. You buy an original Ford Nuvi, modified to Ford's specifications, from a Ford Dealer. In your example I can again only assume that it was sold as a XYZ Dealer Nuvi, modified to their specific requirements and therefore is an original XYZ Dealer Nuvi.

Garmin has done this before. Here is what Ford and Garmin announced last February. As you will see they have had Garmin make alterations to the Nuvi which highlight Ford and their dealers. In this case to the splash screen and installed POIs:

"Garmin and Ford announced today that Ford will begin selling the Nuvi 360 and Nuvi 680 in Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln dealerships throughout the USA.

These devices will have a little bit of Ford branding added to them. The initial screen (splash screen) will have a Ford logo and there will be an additional custom POI database installed featuring Ford dealerships and service shops. Expect to start seeing the Ford Nuvi in dealerships near the end of March."

If my assumptions are correct then IMHO, if you buy a branded device you shouldn't automatically have the ability to remove the changes that the branded company paid to have incorporated into it.

I do agree in your conclusion, but my question is how is it done? (to make my own) and how to remove it?
PS no need to read the page in norwegian, the picture does tell it all.

1) you update the map to the next release, hoping that the custom POIs will go away
2) you sell it and get an unbranded one
3) you throw it at Thor, so that he will smash it with Mjolnir
4) the branded Nuvi was probably at a lower price than the unbranded nuvi, so who cares for a couple POIs, I do not even use the POI menu so often...

If 4 was true, then it would be some ok, but it's not.
It seems that the Norwegian distributer did not know that the dealer has done this and is not happy.
I will post the solution when it's available.

But by dealer you mean a brick and mortar shop selling electonics, like Dixons in England, or Saturn or Mediaworld in Italy and Germany?

For stuff appearing there they woula have to modify the map files.

Unless the gmapoem.img files can be used for this stuff...

Solution found.
Deliting this file "gmapoem.img" removed the custome "where to"

I will try to get a copy of the file to see if we can do other fancy modification.

And her is the file:
[LINK REMOVED - NO REDISTRIBUTION OF COPYRIGHTED FILES WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM OWNER/DISTRIBUTOR]

If anyone like to test it out just put it in the \garmin folder
Hopfully someone can decode it so we can make our own.

Not sure what your exact issue is, you were sold a customized device without being warned ? Then take it back to where you bought it and get a refund.

Link removed. As usual, you can tell people how and what to modify but you can't redistribute copyrighted files without the authorization of the owner, period.

It would be nice to use this to something usefull, like making custom icons on your Nüvi. This seems to bee the first time we can do this.

The issues, from what I understood, is that the people of a chain of shops opened EVERY single box, connected the GPS to a computer and installed the gmapoem.img file containing the locations of their shops and other stuff.

Without telling anybody, especially at Garmin Norway.

Seems odd a retailer would figure that out on their own but I think we've spent enough time on whatever happened over there, it would have been better to go straight to the point, i.e. it seems possible to make custom icons let's figure out how.

@jotne - it seems you're on to something what does that code you removed look like? Probably easier to remove than creat though, how do these icons get inserted in the .img or are they separate files?

I will check if there are more files that is not standard.
Icon did go away when gmapoem.img was removed.
File do contain a list of POI and some other stuff.
