UPDDATED20071006[TOPIC] - Wintec WPL-1000 / Easy Showily Data Logger High sensitivity (uBlox 4) - 94,000 points - Motion Sensor - Screen - Driverless

Product page on Wintec site >> LINK << Wintec have just released the WPL-1000 / "Easy Showily" ("ES") a unique GPS data logger with an odd name and novel features : LCD Screen, Motion sensor, USB Key format with Plug'n'Play (no driver required). Semsons were kind enough to send me a test unit that I took for a quick spin today and plugged it in when I got back, here are some first comments : FIRST COMMENTS :- LCD is small but back-lit and provides useful information : distance covered, time since start, average speed, lat/long, Heading/Speed.
The buttons allow you to reset the current trip as well as set the logging mode (Car/walk/bike/User), activate the sensor, create a new log or a pushpoint.
- ES took a few minutes to get a first fix while driving out (placed next to the driving wheel), likely due to the small patch antenna it uses, but then held on to it very well and tracked accurately - a warm fix (4+ hours without being used) next to a reradiating antenna simulating an open sky environment, was obtained in 30 seconds.
- Connecting to a PC is truly plug'n'play : the ES appears as a drive letter with a Wintool Drive folder that contains several files including Win_Tool.exe. The space available on that 5MB drive is limited to 500KB
- PC application is built into the ES : the Win_Tool.exe is in fact a full suite that lets you visualize your trip on google maps (and send the resulting web page via email), convert it to GPX, KML, etc...and configure the logging mode

It could be really nice companion for travelers who post on blogs while still on trip. Especially that you do not need to install any drivers to use it, so it can be done in any internet cafe. Cool.
A few questions: 1. To get the fix, does it always take couple of minutes (especially after 4 hours)? In what conditions (open view on sky, buildings, indoors)?
2. Does the device have any storage space for "extras"?

Yes, alhtough I'm not clear if it geotags photos, maybe it's drag and drop, need to look up the manual.
I updated the comments for your questions. 1. TTFF is fine with an open sky, but small antennas are always a problem to download the ephemeris data when the signal gets weaker. 2. Barely, 500KB only. |

Thanks for your impressions and very useful information. I have two questions:
1. Is the data available in any standard format without running the PC software built into the device? In other words, could this be plugged into a non-Windows computer and the data be available in some usable form? Any idea what the native format of the stored data is?
2. Is there a way to make the display show the current time? This would be very useful for coordinating the time with a digital camera. |

Welcome to the forums. 1. No unfortunately you need to run the PC app, but it runs from the GPS, see point 4 above. In fact I can't even see a log file in the folder, so it doesn't bode well for a third party app that could convert it. 2. Good point, unfortunately there is no time display. |

| Thanks for additional info. I guess it might be fair to say that it isn't really driverless then. True, you don't need to install a driver in Windows. However, the driver is built into the software included on the device and is very much needed and required to be run in Windows. It's really no different than if the reading application was distributed on a CD along with the unit; it's just that the unit acts as a drive containing that application. |

Right, it still driverless in the sense that you don't need to install a driver on your PC, it gets recognized automatically.
Up to now, the only one that has a raw nmea log that can be read as if it were recorded on a memory card is the AMOD 380, unfortunately it has some significant sensitivity issues for now as discussed in its topic. UPDATE - this was fixed in early 2008 |

Hello, Has anyone managed to get the WPL-1000 to work with IE7? I have tried running the update from the support site but always get the message saying "please obtain update from place of purchase". Thanks |

Great thanks for the tip that works great in Firefox (wish I had thought of that). One more thing have you managed to get it working with Time MachineX? I can not seem to get the extra drivers needed to work. |

Thanks for review, gpspassion! Can you tell if you have a chance to compare it's accuracy with some other data logger maybe even M241? And maybe you have sample tracks to share? Thanks! |
