Semsons has a new data logger available on their site, the Royaltek RBT-2300. As I am in the market for such a device, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this device? I'm specifically intersted in a comparison of this with the BT-335, and MTK units..
Here is a link: http://www.semsons.com/rorbgpsdalos.html
Here are my thoughts / questions (from an email sent to sempsons..):
Looks interesting, but what is up with the 580mAh battery?! ..what is the advantage to a low power chipset with such a low capacity battery.
In the manual it says this is the same battery that is used in the nokia 6100.. According to the nokia website the 6100 uses the BL-4C battery, but Nokia rates their battery at 750mAh. If it uses the BL-4C battery I would consider this unit, as an extra battery with desktop charger can be bought on ebay for $3 + $5 S&H, and with the use of a separate charger I could easily keep a supply of these things charged.
How does the RBT-2300 compare to others in its ability to change log and receiver settings (frequency, altitude, etc)? Can this be done over Bluetooth (with or without a hack)? Will it loose settings / logged data when battery is changed? Can the log be downloaded over Bluetooth?
A nice chart comparing these features, as well as general gps function would be great (..served with a beer would be better!)
The help is much appreciated!

Hadn't heard of the 2300 before, getting hard to keep track...so to speak!
Battery life does indeed seem to be a bit on the low side for a data logger and the LP version of the SiRFstarIII chipset didn't impress me much on the RGM-3800 in terms of battery life (see its topic).
Can't see any onboard controls like on the DG-100 and you can't log every second.
I suspect it's the same (simple and easy to use) software as on the RGM-3800, you can download the app to check it out for yourself. |

Semsons replied to my email and said they opened one up and the battery in it is rated at 680mAh.
..thats a little better, but not much (then again, does it really matter if you can get an extra battery and charger from ebay for under $10, shipping included!)
They also report that there is no USB connectivity, only Bluetooth.

Hi Guys,
I just got me one of these RBT-2300's. Great device.
Anyone have ideas on how to connect to Mac OSX via Bluetooth to download the logs? |

Have you tried a pc emulator, hopefully they handle bluetooth.
Can you share with us what makes you descibe it as a "great device" ? ;-) |

I just received it on Friday and after a few really quick tests I can say that the logger part is better than describe. It can be set to log every second (1~60s) and not 5s (5~60s) as describe.
See screen shot of "data downloader" application:

Yes, I tried to set the settings lower than 5s (I tried 2s) and it worked perfectly. |

| Does it just automatically start logging as soon as the devices is turned on? or is there some sort of push to log button? |

| @caero It will log as soon as it's turned on. There is no push button. The only button on the unit is the on/off button. |

@gpspassion It should work with the RGM-3800. In the connection tab I have the choice of RGM-3800 or RBT-2300.

have you tried log frequencies faster than 1 second (ie. 0.2 seconds [5Hz])?
Is this even possible with a SiRF chipset? I've only seen people doing this with MTK. |

No, check out the >1Hz datalogger thread for your options.
@jsmcjsd - I tried it on the 3800, but no go, in fact if you select the 3800, the logging interval starts at 5 seconds vs 1 on the 2300. |

| I'm surprised but I guess I could have tested by selecting the 3800 also and see that first :-( These two GPS seems so close technically in the specs why would Royaltech have made this difference? And maybe it's just the data downloader software which set this limit not the GPS itself? But for that we need someone who could hack the software to see if this changes anything. |

Hello,
Can anyone who owns the 2300 tell me what altitude data it logs? I'd like to know if it logs actual altitude above sea level, vs. the non-adjusted WGS-84 altitude. I've run into one logger on the market so far that logs the latter in order to be able to save memory (iBlue-747).
Also I'm curious how painful it is to download the logs via Bluetooth. Can anyone quantify how long it takes to download x number of records?
I've written to RoyalTek support with those questions but so far no response.
Thanks! -Max |

Hello,
I've just purchase the Royaltek RBT-2300 Bluetooth GPS and unfortunately I've experienced a bug when I use the Datalogger Downloader software.
The GPS is OK because when I use Royaltek GPS Demo, I've the Bluetooth connection and it work perfectly, but when I launch the Datalogger Downloader I can't get the data from the RBT-2300 and I get the following message : "Can't Get Response from DataLogger" (you can see the attach screen shot).
Does anyone can help me ?
Regards,
Franck

@Zewal I think your problem is maybe that the "Royaltek GPS Demo" is capable of connected the bluetooth COM port for you but the "Datalogger Downloader" is not.
When I use the "Datalogger Downloader" if I didn't connect manually the COM port with my bluetooth application first the "Datalogger Downloader" does not find the RBT-2300 and in this case I get the same exact error as you. If I manually connect the COM port through the bluetooth application first this error disappear.
@maximal Regarding the speed to download the data I would say that compare to my previous one it's amazingly fast. I'll update you next time I have a lot of data in it to have an estimate of the speed. I used before the Delorme BlueLogger and it was painfully slow.
Regarding the altitude value I'm not really sure. I know that the only format you get when you download is a full NMEA 0183. I have no real idea how to check that. If you could tell me what the Delorme BlueLogger is storing in this case I could try to compare the result at least approximately.
Update: After a new speed test I would say it took me approximately 60s to download approximately 5800 points.
To all: I just also wanted to that the Nokia BL-4C batteries work great in it. I ordered a couple online for less than $5 each and there are original Nokia BL-4C batteries with the Nokia Stickers. There are alos rated 860mAh which should mean a lot more power time for the logger in theory....
