I split my adult life working and living in the US and in Europe. I have some idea of some of the differences. When transferring a Europe- based way of navigating to the US there are some general factors that need to be taken into consideration.(I learned this from my first maps of Madrid and Athens which are colossal jurisdictions). I do not envy the developers who have to do this, some differences are bianary, some are more subtle.

In the US generally urban sprawl, and development create new towns and metropolitan areas tend to be comprised many many towns. This is a broad generalization but where I have lived in Europe the jurisdiction of the town tended to be geographically very wide. In the US in a metro area (not a city center but the general area of say 10-40 miles out) there are likely to be many many towns and it is very likely you cannot say which one you are in.

It seems Navigon did a good job of looking at this in the street search function and changed it from the Europenman method. I do not think this was done for the POI system and this is creating a problem in searching for, for example a CVS (this is a pharmacy chain) near where I am at a given moment even if I don't know the name of the city. An ad hoc stop at a CVS is much more likely than an ad hoc stop at a Golf Course.

I am not an engineer and I cannot parse the code. My knowledge simply comes from have some sense of how to get around and find things in Europe and in the US, some experience with other GPS POI systems, and working with the 7100.

What are other users' observations of 7100 POI behavior, both good or problematic, that could help any possible future adjustment?

[Note bene:
I have had an email exchange with site host, GPSpassion, in which he indicated that it is fair to wait a bit to give Navigon some time to digest initial reaction on any issues, objective or subjective, and see how they react. I agree. I make the following comments and invite participation in the context putting forward technical and non technical observations that may help navigon support address possible updates/fixes, in this case POI's].

I agree with giving Navigon some time to resolve the issues but the sad thing is that we are not able to speak with them directly but only to an out sourced customer/tech support team. :(

I think many of these firestorms could have been prevented with just a few "I will look in to it and get back to you" answers, instead of what we were getting, i.e. "it is not me, its the other guy" answers.

the forum administrator has let me know he believes Navigon is look into the issue of US support, etc. Let's let that go for at least a short while on this thread and concentrate on this thread on observed difficulties with POI per se.

I just received my 7100 a few days ago, and I have an issue with the POI support on the 7100. Why is it that I could not find a Lowes or Home Depot POI in my searches? I sat in a Home Depot parking lot (this Home Depot has been there for at least 5 years), and the 7100 could not find any Home Depots!! The same occurred when I did a search for Lowes. In my area there are about 5 Home Depots and 3 Lowes in a 20 mile area. I really hope that the next map update for the 7100, supposedly sometime in Q1 2008, will correct the POI issue. I feel that the current POI locations on this unit is seriously lacking. Even though I knew the directions and locations to these other home improvement stores, the 7100 not providing/finding not one, even while I was sitting in a Home Depot parking lot, I will give this GPS a grade of "F".

The entire gps doesn't deserve an F but the Points of interests do. If you switch to display POI in many areas your screen can have scores of Macdonald's logos turning your screen into a big McDonald's advertisement.

It isn't just about not finding Home Depot or Best Buy or Circuit city, finding other basic businesses like UPS, FEDEX, Kinkos and even US Posts offices are impossible, not listed or cumbersome.

Yesterday I was sitting .1 mile form one post office and .2 from a second one and the 7100 would list no Post Office nearby.

You're correct aer. I should have been more specific about my grade of "F". I was only referring to the POIs included with the software and the search menu for POIs. Other than the POI issue, I feel the 7100 is very good.
