Hello everyone... Great forum.. I just purchased a Holux m-1200 off ebay.. Does anyone know if this can be updated to 5hz? There seems to be many hacks for the MTK chipset.. Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this.. Also does the tomtom Navigator software work with this device?
Thanks Stephen

| Does anybody know if these will work as a GPS Mouse (with the optional cable) without the battery installed? I'm pretty sure the Holux 236 and 240 worked like that and I'm curious if that feature was included in the newer models. |

I have just purchased a Holux M1000B. I am trying to evaluate the unit for precision, WAAS support, and to see if the LSB (Low Speed Bug) has been fixed. For info on the LSB, please see other threads on this issue, it is basically a freezing of the position, speed, or bearing when the unit has been still for while. I got fed up with MTK cause of the LSB, and decided to wait a couple months for the firmware to mature, and then buy another unit.
My unit has firmware B_core_1.0
The bad news is that I believe the LSB is still present in this unit. I am not certain it behaves exactly like the USB unit I looked at a couple of months ago. It would be nice if I or others here could quantitatively evaulate the LSB, and not have to say things like "the unit takes a while to wake up after being still"!
I'll try to get more quantitative in the coming weeks, but basically it seems to still have the characteristic of not reporting a speed after having been still for a couple minutes. Also, it has the constrained position that I saw in the early USB unit. By this I mean if I leave the unit still and look at measurements, the position tends to lock, where it really should be a gaussian distribution.
Now, here is another problem.... The unit is Bluetooth and USB. I am only able to turn WAAS on and off when I am using the Bluetooth interface!!! What??? I use the same command to toggle WAAS when I am using Bluetooth or USB. In both cases, I get a command response back from the unit that indicates the WAAS enable command was received correctly. I am totally stumped as to why the unit's internal functionality would be different depending on the serial interface!!! Interestingly, I can use the unit in WAAS mode with the USB interface if I first set the unit into WAAS mode with the Bluetooth interface, and then, without resetting the unit, switch over to USB. If I turn the unit off and on under USB connection, I can never set to WAAS mode with USB.
The good news is that the unit can be set to 5 HZ update rate (my old USB only device could not)
Well, I have a new mission in life figuring out these MTK units. I will report back later with more concrete info, but does anyone have any comments? questions? help?

The LSB is still there in my M1000B. If I remain still with the unit for about a minute, it goes into the "stopped" mode. Then, if I walk real slowly, the unit doesn't realize I am moving. I can move 40 feet, and the unit will not report any speed, bearing or position change. Then, all of a sudden it can wake up, and the position will over the course of maybe 10 seconds, finally get to the correct position.
BTW, my complete version string is: B-core_1.0,0012
I'm not sure why everyone else is reporting that the LSB has been fixed. Maybe it's only fixed in the iBlue 737 with the 1.94 version.

Hello,
I bought a Holux M1200 and have the following problems:
- The program MiniGPS that comes with the receiver on the CD does not detect the receiver. I use bluetooth to connect my laptop with the receiver. Com 16 is assigned for outgoing port. Com 17 is for incomming port. When I use MiniGPS to scan ports, it stops at Com 10 and said that no GPS found.
- When I tested it with MS Streets and Trips, the program can detect that a GPS found on port Com 16. I assigned this port to the GPS. Then, when I click on "start GPS...", it said that it cannot connect to the assigned port, then stops.
I don't know what is happing with my GPS. I tried also Hyper teminal to open the Com 16 port and it seems everything ok. The text data received has NMEA format.
- Do we need to put the receiver in a clear-sky-view position? I tested it both indoor and outdoor but nothing changes.
- How can we communicate with the receiver by typing commands? Where can I find the command set?
- I want to update the firmware of the receiver. I see on the net that the same product for EU market has the newest firmware that the update freq is 5 Hz and it can receive upto 51 satelite.
Please help me. I'm just a newbee with this.
Thanks a lot.

Today I test the receiver with another program, the Fugawi Maps software. This is a trial version. It works. We can see the detected satelites and its signal strength, we can see the current position on the map and also the data received from the receiver.
So I guess Ms. Streets and Trips is not compatible with the BT GPS Holux M1200. As I searched on the net, it is said that MS S & T does not support the transmission speed of 34800, so it can only use the BT link to communicate with the M1200 receiver and cannot use the serial interface (mini-USB port). But eventhough, I had problems with the BT connections. I tried for abour 50 times, only twice MS S&T can connect to the GPS receiver and display the received information.
If you guys have some ideas on this, pls let me know. Thanks for that.

For any of the owners out there...
Do either of these units automatically standby after a certain amount of inactivity? I'd like to hook it up to my CarPC through the USB data cable and have it come out of standby when I'm moving and then standby when I'm parked. Mainly I want to avoid cold starts. Is this possible with these units? Thanks for any info. Also is there any other unit that might fill my needs? I prefer an USB option that way it will always charge when it is actually in use and the battery will only be for standby. Thanks again. |

Hi Guys!
I contacted with Holux about firmware update on M-1200 receiver and I got the following files attached to do the update.
Currently I am unable to test it, but maybe you can. Please download the attachment from this link:
http://data.hu/get/437770/M-1200_update_procedure.rar.html
Could someone send a feedback if (un)successfull? |

Hi!
I upgraded my M-1200 with this new firmware. Device seems to work fine. The only problem that I have noticed is that my Holux lost its Bluetooth device address and it is now reseted to FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. I don't know if any other internal settings are lost. I know the previous address, but I don't know how to configure it again.
I can't say much about changes in GPS accuracy or functionality. What I noticed is that bluetooth and satellite leds duty cycle like 90% off and 10% on, which will probably save power. I think duty cycle used to be something like 50% with previous FW.
Mini GPS reports that new FW version is: B-core_1.20 000C
My advice for someone trying to upgrade FW: Perform read back with Flashtool from 0x00000000 to 0x000511FF. I think this will fetch previous FW(and probably settings) from device and save it to local file. I didn't do this for the whole image, because default length was set to 0x00000100.
If someone could provide me read back ROM image and BT address, I could check if BT address is stored in flash.

| It seems that I should add BT address write capability to BT747 ;-). |

The upgrade was made from bluetooth or with the datacable (usb or serial)?
I found these about HOLUX M-241 upgrade:
HOLUX M-241 Download and Update Firmware Operation Procedure (20080325) [Note] 1. Utility currently only support firmware download through USB cable. 2. Please DO NOT download and update through bluetooth. 3. If the USB cable is disconnected during downloading, please re-download on the same PC which cable disconnected , in order to recover the device original Bluetooth Mac Address. |

I was using data cable for upgrade. If I remember correctly, upgrade is not possible via BT.

If you see the firmware file with an hex editor, see the bluetooth address empty. You can add your own address editing the file and re-flashing. |

Yes, but right now I don't know what is the address in memory, where BT address is saved. That's why I would like to see flash image with known BT address so that I could patch my flash image. But it might be that all device specific settings are stored in some other memory device.
