UPDATED 20090309 : HP has finally put out the iPaq 310 owners of their misery, so to speak, by confirming that it will no longer be updated and that in fact they are no longer in the PND market. This was their full statement : "HP is no longer in the PND market and has no plans to introduce a new model. We continue to include GPS and LBS applications like navigation in our smart phones, but will not release any new pure PNDs going forward." as forwared by a forum member.
While the PND market has certainly become difficult, one can't help but think that HP didn't make the most of the iPaq 310 released in late 2007 with stellar features (800x480 screen, AGPS, iGO8's "liquid navigation") but was then poorly supported, with confusing software and map updates and not very functional PC companion software. All is not lost however as some enterprising souls have found ways to "customize" the iPaq by adding WiFi for instance.

HP Website : Product Page NEW - Video preview >> HERE << - More pictures >> HERE << Among the 5 new mobile devices announced by HP today, see details, the iPaq 310/314 is the one that stands out, at least GPS wise, as it is a GPS "Tablet" with groundbreaking specs :
- 4.3" screen with a 800x480 resolution - to be compared to the 480x272 of the current 4.3" AIOs like the Garmin 6xx/7xx and TomTom x20
- 600Mhz Centrality Titan DualCore platform - this is the new generation of Centrality platforms with a built-in GPS module. The 600Mhz Titan is rated at an equivalent of 2 Million correlators, to be compared to the 200,000 of the SiRFstarIII chipset and 200,000 polygons in OpenGL
- "Autonomy" feature - on-board autonomous calculation of the ephemeris data normally broadcasted by the actual GPS satellites and required to compute a position. Downloading live ephemeris data requires a good signal level and always takes a minimum of 30 seconds when the transmission isn't interrupted by loss of signal (buildings, trees, etc...). Up to now, a workaround was to download the ephemeris data from a server, like SiRFinstantFix or NEX do, see this topic for more about that. With "Autonomy", they are computed directly on-board to get rid of the connection requirement, something that's made possible by the power of the CPU.
- 3D Navigation - Judging by the screenshot above, the map rendering seems very advanced, with genuine 3D, something only available in Japan up to now. It even seems more advanced than the upcoming Nav'n'GO/MioMap 2008 that will be limited to well-known landmarks and terrain model
UPDATE - based on the video linked above it appears that the software is customized version of Nav'n'GO v8 (i.e. Miomap 2008) and will not have full 3D rendering, only certain buildings
- Built-in RDS TMC in Europe
- WinCE 5.0 OS
- 2Gb flash memory
- MSRP : $449

Interesting. Some questions: - North American availability (also traffic)? - Hackability (a la Mio)? - Map provider (Navteq/TeleAtlas)?

wow this thing looks nice, does anybody know what software it runs? how the software might compare to TomTom? I use TomTom 6 on my pda right now with a SirfIII CF card gps.
btw.. is the gps receiver in this thing as good as the SirfIII or even better? |

I heard that it also runs iGo at 800x480 resolution. Win CE 5.0 Should be hackable. However, I can only think of a few GPS applications that can support this resolution nicely. |

Nice find, thanks for the link.
It looks a lot like a custom version of...Nav'n'Go v8, i.e. MioMap v8 ! The blinking cursor and trip summary are the giveaways. And it's not full 3D like the above screenshot let it on, just some buildings like Nav'n'GO.
Still, looks like a nice device.

| Given HP, though, it will probably be a premium price. I hope it is affordable. |

I am still testing my Centrality II Dual Core Harman/Kardon 500. (hmm... my wife complaining I spend too much time w/ GPS-s, that I change them so often I have yet to keep one for more than 3 weeks)
As far as the tracking goes, it was way beyond my expection.
The accuracy was surprising precise! (obviously, I have many experiences w/ SiRF III and Bravo to compare w/)
If HP indeed using Centrality chipset, I really wouldn't be worry about it. After all, SiRF wouldn't have bought Centrality if it wasn't any good or better, right?

Nothing on traffic info for this device?
I also think that if this isn't NavnGo 2008 then they will be sued for copying...
Looks really nice, but I have a hard time saying goodbye to TMC functionality so I want that too.
Well, this spec page says TMC is included in the software ("RDS/TMC traffic data support (EMEA)":

The MSRP of $449 in the US and €340 in Europe isn't too bad given the specs, we'll see how they pan out on the road though.
@no clue - not sure what's "DualCore" about the Centrality Atlas II chipset, but the Titan is supposed to be 100x times more powerful! There are a few units out there with the Atlas II chip and while it performs ok it's more like SiRFstarII in terms of sensitivity and tracking. This is OT here( we have a dedicated thread) but I don't think SiRF bought Centrality for their GPS skills, more the whole SOC designs ;-) |

@gpspassion;
I see~ thanks for the info. :) Titan certainly looks sweet w/ its 40-channel GPS performance. ( only wish it isn't "mio" UI ) Now I am saving money to jump on this iPaq when it become available.
As Atlas-II performance, I was extremely surprise w/ HK 500. Last night, I took it to the same route as my previous Bravo vs SiRF on Nuvi test. HK 500 reroute me almost immediately when I missed a turn and know I was on carpool lane on multi-lane exit. ( this is not HK review, just that I am confident w/ Centrality :) )
