Hi all,

I'm sorry to post in this topic but I need neadrenalin's help. If he can read topic entitled "Nuvi 250 don't boot after firmware update" (TOPIC_ID=113675) I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks neadrenalin for this new cure version.

I have installed it in my unit without problem but it have not fixed it. I'm still unable to boot my Nuvi. All I see is the Garmin splash screen for a second or two then shuts down.

Thanks again for your help.

I have successfully restored my nuvi 200 back to original specs, except for one item. I need the help files. I can't find them anywhere and the webupdater doesn't seem to offer them. Could somebody pull the help files off their 200 and zip/rar them up for me? Much appreciated.

My nuvi 250W won't connect with g7towin wich returns an error: failed getting USB handle.
However, I can see both the handheld and the SD card in it (as mass storage devices) under windows.
Anyone has had this experience and if so, what is the fix?
Thanks.

PER OUR FAQ, PLS DO NOT QUOTE MSG IF IT IS DIRECTLY ABOVE. THANKS.

Hi kwhunter,

Neadrenalin instruction is quite clear. You may miss something out.

Procedure should be like this.
1. Shift-and-hold power button on Garmin unit
2. Garmin logo appear and attach usb then (Still hold the Garmin power button)
3. run g7towin (Still hold the Garmin power button)
4. select menu gps-get gps id (Still hold the Garmin power button)
5. id information will display.

You may try this.

I hear you, but it doesn't work for me; whether I hold the power button or not, it will return the same error message: fail to get USB handle, even though the unit is properly installed and visible.
He's using 'should' instead of 'is', which IMO means may or may not work.

kwhunter, please use http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=100355 topic for your model nuvi.

gps555, one step is required.
0. Disconnect usb cable and Power off your device
1...
1a. Wait until Windows installs drivers for nuvi (this may take a long time, manual select for driver location is required sometimes)
Keep in mind, that after 30 seconds nuvi shows calibration menu, and exits from the pre-boot mode.

Neadrenalin,
I followed the instructions but still doesn't work.
The only thing I was able to get is SW version 3.40, ID:835 and unit ID before it crapped out.
Hre's what I found on gpsinformation.org:
Supported GPS Devices

G7ToWin supports the following classes of GPS devices:

Garmin: Only those Garmin units which communicate via the RS-232 port or the USB port and which also communicate via the Garmin Interface Specification. Several of the more recent Garmin units provide a 'disk drive' when connected to the PC. Communicate with these units is accomplished by the PC reading/writing a file on the unit. G7ToWin does not support those units.

Ok, I have a related issue that hopefully this service firmware method might be able to solve. I've, uh, performed some surgery on a Nuvi 200 and added and additional 1G of memory. The maintenance screen shows 1G+1G. Unfortunately, I wasn't too smart about it and did not consider how I would get it to reformat the file system to use it. After doing a factory reset, the file system is kinda messed up, and I can't get past the "loading maps" without it rebooting continously. I tried all the 'cure' programs here, but it didn't do it. So I guess I'm looking for any way to reinitialize the file system and then to reload the system files back on. I'm happy to see that there is a way to get into bootloader mode, but now I have to figure out how to fool it into a initialize. Thoughts?

(BTW, if this type of topic is off limits here, just let me know)

What type of NAND Flash chip have you soldered as additional 1GB? Same as main chip?
Have you done something with main chip? (desoldering.. etc?

If there is mess in file system you can do nothing now. No cure firmware will work.

When I added second chip to N200.. I flashed/programmed main chip with N270 flash contents. (with Wellon VP-480)
Im not sure if N200 can handle more than factory 1GB chip.

Also sometimes when you add second chip.. diagnostic menu will show it.. but you will have no access to this space on Windows.

You need to format whole Nuvi (DO NOT UNPLUG USB AFTER FORMATING)
Sometimes you need to remove Nuvi partition and add new one with new size details.

Bad news for end of this post.
In 99% you have to flash main chip with some kind of NAND Flash programmer.
But you need to have image of working Nuvi/chip.

PS. I have some flash images.. I can share.

The original chip was a Hynix, but I couldn't get that, so I used a Micron chip, which as far as I can tell from the datasheet, is compatible. I did not do anything to the first chip. When I first rebooted it up, it appeared ok, and the maintenance menu showed 1G+1G. But when I plugged it into USB, two drives showed up, one the original 1G and another one that was inaccessible. I then tried the factory reset, thinking (foolishly) that it might reinitialize, but that made it worse. I think it was at that point that I could no longer acess it as a USB drive. In retrospect, I should have reformatted the drive and loaded back the files in one USB session, before I did anything else. Now I am unable to get into USB drive mode, though I can still load f/w with the Loader mode. My goal is to be able to get it past the bad files to the point where I can connect via USB and repartition, reformat and restore the files

PouchX, I was unable to email you for extra details so if you could try email me, that would be great.

Hynix was HY27UG088G5M
Micron was MT29F8G08MADWC

The Micron datasheet is unavailable without NDA, but it is shown compatible with a Samsung NAND flash, which in turn looks compatible with the Hynix.

Can you make those flash images available to me please?
