Problems, that service firmware can solve: 1. After I put the world map as gmapsupp under /Garmin folder, the nuvi stocked on loading maps bar. Is there anybody now how to recover it? Now I even can not enter the USB storage mode.
Answer: You have to start your device to have disks. OK. The main idea - to start the device and delete these gmapsupp.img wrong file. (or another "bad map" file img). How to do it if the unit does not start?
Let's use the updater, PRE-BOOT mode and some modified self-made service firmware. http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260_recovery_no_maps_visible.rar
Unpack this file and start the device in the pre-boot mode. (hold the POWER button until the LOADER message appears) Pay attention that PRE-BOOT mode string is not displayed by 2xx nuvi, but other version such as 3xx and 6xx display it. Attach the device usb. Run updater and select nuvi. Click ok and proceed. Agree with updater if any additional messages appeared. If LOADER appeared on the screen you may release POWER button and wait until unit flashed.
After success flashing unit restarts. (if you used WebUpdater before - gupdate.gcd needs to be deleted too! because of unit automatic firmware update after boot if this file exists, now it is no need in it, we will made it manually) Now unit should boot! And there is only basemap shown (no gmapsupp, no gmapprom, gmapprom1 visible). And now you can attach it as a Mass Storage Device and DELETE wrong gmapsupp (or whatever you need). Then you need to make flash for usual firmware for unit. I prefer usual firmware loaded in PRE-BOOT mode, I hate gupdate.gcd :)
So, download the file http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260.rar and use it as I described above. Now your nuvi is fully operational and have no "bad maps".
2geeks. I made the service firmware manually and tested it successfuly today on my nuvi200. It works.
2gpspassion. You may stick this question too and files. Be free to copy this content to another forums, it really can help people.
The main idea to create restoring file is to rename texts like "gmapsupp" to something strange "umapsupp" in the firmware code. So, unit starts, searches umapsupp.img and does not find it - we are lucky, we need it :) |

2. After days passed my unit writed : SOFTWARE MISSING. How to recover it?
Answer: Use recovery method from the 1 question and the http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260.rar file. It recovers your unit and gives access to disks. So, you can use WebUpdater or another manual method to upgrade software version then.
3. How can I revert to an older version of the firmware? Answer: Use http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xx/fw_nuvi2xx_en_v260.rar file and then upgrade to the necessary version. It does not revert GPS Chipset Version, XLOADER version, BootBlock version. If your unit had older version XLOADER than 0.68 it will be upgraded to 0.68, and if BootBlock had older version than 2.90 it will be upgraded too. I can make original versions for then (such as appeared in original 2.60 unit), but I have no time for it, sorry.
Warninig! All your user data will be lost. Maps, files and unlocks should remain unchanged.

Sorry but in .rar files there are only .rgn files. Where should i copy them to restore, from 3.30 to 2.60. And how long should i hold power button pressed on nuvi200? When i hold them pressed for some time the calibration screen comes out (Another hidden feature ;) )

You must know that .rgn files are used by updater.exe flashing ptogram (which is included in any firmware except nuvi series). Download from garmin for example 60csx firmware, unpack this self extracting archive to the selected place and find there updater.exe. updater and your nuvi .rgn file must be in the same directory.
You have to pass all described steps when start flashing firmware no more than 30 seconds - calibration starts then. You have to release power button after seeing LOADER on the device's screen.

TNX for help. I did that yesterday and now the Garmin is working without those bugs presented in 2.9, 3, 3.1, 3.3 firmware. It is really a shame of Garmin to ignore such bugs which causes the units to shut down and behave as they were broken. I hope Garmin will react and repair those bugs in the future release.
TNX again

Hi, I cannot enter service mode in my Nuvi 250. How is this achieved please? I tried keeping power slider to the left (power on) for nearly a minute, but the nuvi enters in TouchScreen callibration mode, not service mode. I tried several combinations but I never managed to enter into the Pre Boot mode to delete some corrupted files. Note that USB connection is not availableeither.

| I have followed the instructions posted by neadrenalin ( 08/16/2007 : 13:50:08) and managed to reflush the software through the PREBOOT, but somehow V2.90 takes over again and the crash remains. |

1) If you check his profile ther is NO email user, else I would not have written such a lame comment/question! (Please check yourself and confirm)
2) Do you have an alternative way to contact neadrenalin?
3) I am very surprised that first you created a new topic for my problem related to this post (fair enough, good idea) and then the admin locked that topic stating that I should revert to this topic ?!?! I have written a detailed and easy post (some 15 steps, 25mins of typing) how the pre boot loader works for newbies (we are not born expert aren't we), and that got also removed by the admin ??? Additionally I followed the instructions written here, and did not succeeded (there are some 2 or 3 such posts too, and open) so I do not really see the point of locking that topic. Kindly I ask the admin to reopen that topic for follow up. IMO it is unfair. I believe that the aim of this forum is to share knowledge and help each other, and their should be some degree of tolerance to everyone.

I have checked his profile and like all other users there is a link to his e-mail. If you click on his user name to go to his profile page you should see the following on the left side of the profile screen:

Click on "Click to send an e-mail" and you will get a new screen where you can compose your note and send it .
I know the link works as I have sent an e-mail using this link today as a test.
Also you can request gpspassion to reopen the thread he locked by sending him and e-mail using these same procedures (go to gpspassion profile page and click on "click to send an e-mail". |

If you are moderator, you can email him and tell hm about this post, then he decides what to do. As I said, I found 3 or 4 topic with exactly this type of problem unresolved, on different nuvi models. So the problem is more widespread than it seems.
It's up to you!
