REVIEWED - Royaltek RGM-3800 Logger SiRFstarIII/LP - 64Mb
RGM-3800 next to the WBT-201, Garmin 60CSx and Vista HCx
http://www.royaltek.com/index.php/content/view/139/104/
UPDATED 20071121 : can now log at 1Hz, see message below
UPDATED 09/2007 : I have used the RGM63800 (kindly loaned to me by www.semsons.com) for about a month now including on a flight from SFO to CDG as seen in the picture above. Here are some pros and cons :
+ : small and light + : good GPS sensitivity, quick acquisition time + : PC companion sofware is simple and easy to use + : geotagging software by Locr recognizes the logs automatically + : 64Mb of memory
- : limited battery life even with alkaline batteries, about 10 hours. Disappointing since it is supposed to use the SiRFstarIII LP (low power) chipset - : logging frequency can't be adjusted down to 1 second, but not a big problem in the field - : no sensor to start/stop logging automatically like on the Gisteq
POSTED 08/2007 - The popular "BlueGPS" (Royaltek 3000 Bluetooth Datalogger) released in 2003 was in need of a successor. While the RBT-1000 ("BabyBlue") and RBT-2x00 took over for the Bluetooth part, we will have had to wait until 2007 and the RGM-3800 for the datalogger part...but without Bluetooth.
In spite of the lack of Bluetooth connectivity, the RGM-3800 remains an interesting device with the powerful SiRstarIII GPS Chipset in its LP (Low Power) version, a record memory of 64Mb good for 650,000 points, the use of standard AAA batteries for "unlimited" autonomy and an attractive price of $75 at Semsons. Also of note is a direct link in the PC companion application to www.LOCr.com that we discussed in the "Picture Geocoding Guide". Stay tuned for a review on GpsPasSion.

5 second minimum interval & USB connection can't recharge battery?
So close, but yet so far!
If it could charge battery through USB & had 1 second logging interval I would have already purchased it. |

| Does anyone have any input on this unit? I'm considering purchasing it for some graduate work I'm doing. I'll be doing some sampling while riding a bike around an area of my city and need a GPS logger (so I can attach lat/lon attributes to the data I obtain through another data logger). Would anyone recommend this product for such usage? How does it compare to the Qstarz BT-Q1000? |

Welcome to the forums and thanks for nudging me to update that topic ;-)

| Awesome, thanks for the update. Seeing as I don't need Bluetooth, this unit is more attractive to me than the BT-Q1000. |

Does any of the current users of this unit know if you can power it from a usb connection and have it log? I would like to “permanently” install it and have it power up and start logging when power is applied to the system. I can use a simple USB “charger” adaptor. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?

Yes, really
Don't sure to understand the question about 2300 utility. Yes, it's the same utility for the RBT-2300 and the RGM-3800 (for configuration, data download, ...). No change for this part. |

Well actually the 3800 originally shipped with a simple utility, hence my question, and I wasn't sure it supported the new 1hz update rate, but it doesn't really matter. I'm about to upgrade my test unit ;-)
UPDATE - well I'll have to take your word for it because my laptop crashed during the upgrade process and I can't seem to revive the 3800 :-( |

| Hi, has anyone tried upgrading the firmware in Vista? I get a "Initial Load Error" when I start the firmware update and it doesn't get updated. Don't want to hose my logger before my trip in a couple of weeks. |

Just noticed that royaltek has uploaded another file...
http://www.royaltek.com/download/rgm3800firmware1021.zip
Not sure if it's a newer firmware version than the one mentioned above, but this one comes with a newer version of the data downloader.
I still have no luck updating my firmware in Vista. I'll try on a friend's XP machine sometime in the future. |

My unit blew up and become non-operational after trying to upgrade the latest firmware. I'm sure others will find this no problem. I was unlucky I guess.
