Good question. My only guess would be that updates come via the cards so it would need the built-in card reader. As to why they give you a blank card I have no idea, as I have never seen anyone suggest that it has a MP3 player. Having said this that doesn't mean that they haven't updated the 7100 to include a MP3 player as the N100 has one. We'll see in a week or two, or maybe even tomorrow

From what I understand it is extremely easy. Probably the best POI device of any GPS unit on the market. Full reviews will be coming soon.

| I believe the 4gb card is for the large POI database and descriptions of top restaurants and attractions. That's what the info says... |

| Maybe they didn’t have build-in memory (only 64ROM/64RAM). And all US /Canada maps on that separate 4 Gig SD card? |

The 4mb card (if equipped) will be included for the Zagat surveys...
"ZAGAT Survey(R) Ratings and Reviews: Five destination guides, including top U.S. hotels, resorts and spas, restaurants, golf courses, as well as attractions and nightlife in 70+ U.S. cities help users make informed destination choices"
The device does have 2gb of internal memory.

"Zagat Survey ratings and rankings for over 24,000 restaurants and nightspots in 70+ cities"
For WM 5.0 only 20 Meg in size. |

A few things :
1. The 4GB come in handy if you want to load both the EURO (1.8Gb) and NA (1.7Gb) maps. They probably went with SDHC cards for the extra speed (the app runs off the card)
2. The unit does not have 2Gb of flash memory, the app runs off the SD card. It has 64Mb of RAM and 200Mb of Flash.
3. I doubt that the CleverMap v4 map cutting will be back though, it required massive processing power and confused most users. I guess they could make separate state maps available, but why bother when they can fit the whole continent on a single card, extra work for them...and extra support for people who will complain they can't route from SF to LV with the CA maps loaded only.
4. Possibly a limitation of my NA maps, but Hawai and Alaska are not there, selecting USA (you can also select States) and typing their zip code returns a blank.
5. The USB transfer speed is very fast so it's likely USB2.0. I don't have an SDHC card reader so I transfered maps directly from my laptop to the 7100 (the SD card in the 7100 mounts directly in Windows Explorer)
6. On the POIs, that's the weak point of the Navigon software compared to TomTom Garmin and even Mio (with POIExplorer Beta), there is nothing available out of the box, you need to buy POI-Warner that costs €30 and that is now compatible with the 71xx series although I have yet to try it for myself, I'll ask navigating.de for a test licence next week.
7. You can boot into WindowsCE with the trick used on the Route 66 Chicago device, i.e. hold the side button down. |

gpspassion, Could you explain a little more (when you get a chance) on what "boot into Windows CE" means? I guess my question is this:
When you boot into Windows CE, does it look like a normal WM5 today screen?

This has just been confirmed from Navigons tech department. The 5100/7100 does indeed use USB 2.0 I am so glad that they didn't cut corners like Garmin did. |

Hi Timon,
I used Buy.com to place my order. They say the unit is currently not in stock but they are accepting orders now. Their price is $573.00 and includes free shipping. That is (thus far anyway) the best price I have seen.

GPSPASSION, are you saying the US maps are not loaded on the device, or is the MN6 software not loaded (and on the SD card)? I saw this information on Navigon's fact sheet for the 7100:
"WHAT’S INCLUDED The NAVIGON 7100 comes preloaded with North American* maps, SD card, car charger, wall charger, car mount, USB cable, CD and user manual on DVD, quick installation guide, warranty.
*Excluding Mexico."
I guess I'm just looking for a little clarification on your first 2 observations above. You're correct, there isn't much extra space for a lot more data (64mb/64mb) on the device itself. It appears the maps are loaded on the device per their own site seller. You can find this information on http://tinyurl.com/2gz4xu Click on 7100 Datasheet at the bottom of the page. Then go to page 2.

Not that it really matters, but again, everything is stored on the SD card, hence the requirement to have a fast card and going with SDHC.
@weatheryoko - no it boots into the WinCE shell, you can see some examples in the "WinCE customization" article on the portal. |

GPSPASSION: A couple of quick questions.
Is there an upper limit on SDHC capacity (beyond the *current* capacity of cards on the market)? Any idea when your review will be there for us to read?
In the best of all possible worlds, Fry's will get both the 7100 and the 720 for me to compare the UI, etc., in time to purchase whichever unit I prefer prior to a long trip.
Thanks! |

gpspassion: Thanks for the reply. It looks like you boot into the classic "HPC" desktop. I've done some reading on the portal and how various people have customized their units. I'm curious if: 1) You can activesync with the 7100 when loaded into WinCE (i.e. create a partnership and sync with it). 2) Are the various PIM programs there? (i.e. Contacts, Mail, Tasks, etc) My guess is that they won't be there, but it would be interesting to know.
Having read the various posts, it sounds like you can install software on the device (as long as it was made to run on an HPC). Thanks again.
