Feedback on the PDA Version >> HERE <<
New Page 1
What's new in
iGuidance
4
This is not meant to be a review. iGuidance has been reviewed at
www.gpspassion.com on more than one
occasion in the past. The following is just a brief outline of only the
differences between the previous versions of the product and the newest version
4.

Perhaps the most significant change in this version is
the introduction of the software activation
procedure. iNav Corp
has been resisting implementing this procedure for a long time - longer than
their competition. But I think many of us can understand why iNav is adopting
this measure, even though this new "feature" is not going to be popular among
users.

* A few days ago a user of this forum mentioned info received from one of the
iGuidance distributors - apparently the distributor said there would be two
separate products sold separately a PPC program and a PC program. This is NOT
true. As always a purchased DVD will contain all the available versions of the
program - PPC/Laptop/UMPC. But it will be now required to activate the program
before the first use.
* For Laptop/UMPC users there will now be a new
14-day evaluation version of the
program available only for a small shipping/handling charge directly from iNav
or from some distributors. If a user opts to get this evaluation version, s/he
may later purchase an activation code (e.g. on-line, via phone, etc). Since this
evaluation DVD contains no PPC version of the program, the user will be given a
download link if s/he wishes to use the PPC version after purchasing the
activation code. There is no evaluation version of the PPC program at this time.

* Map is based on Navteq Q3-2006 data.

Friends of ours bought a new house on Mike Myers Drive in
Toronto. It’s nice to see the new streets in iGuidance 4. In fact iGuidance
version 4 is today more up-to-date than the on-line map
www.live.com
by Microsoft :-)
A year ago Alaska was included to
iGuidance 3. This year iGuidance 4 adds map coverage of
Puerto Rico and the
US Virgin Islands.
* For the sake of simplicity there is no longer MapLoader
application included
with the program. Now all the map data will be installed on a user PPC and/or
PC. This takes about 1.3 GB - not an issue for laptop users these days, but if
your PPC has a smaller storage card you may need to go to your local computer
store to purchase a larger one. 2GB SD cards sell for around $30, and in many
cases they can be found for around $20.
The reduced data (from 2.2GB in pre-v4 versions down to 1.3GB in v4) itself is
not due to "compression" but a revamp of the program code itself
* TTS (name of street
is part of the voice guidance)
* 6 million POI's,

| All I care is that the content is updated... and some bugs... like "Route List"... really miss that. |

Just got this from INav: "... actual shipping date of v4 will be more toward end of next week ..," which should be around 06/29? Also, for the next upgrade for Intellinav AIO GPS System, "... Next Upgrade for AIO will most likely be available mid to late July." Marvin, Many thanks for the preview of V4 above. I do like the TTS (spell street names), 6 million POI, and all North America map stored on 1.3G. These should qualify the upgrade to be called v4, I believe. I did use IG V3.0.1 with all the US maps (2.3G) stored on a 4GB SD. Surprisingly, and most impressively, no significant slow-down in address searching and no delay (at all) in real guidance. IG must have done something in their database management because an old software (PMN retired) did show long delays by the use of the same map card. |

Marvin, Have you had a chance to review the routing to see if V4 has resolved any of the "silly" problems of versions 2 and 3? Is "quickest" still the only viable option? Derek |

| I just received an email from Inav, and was able to pre-order the software. They say it will ship out the week of the 25th. |

| Marvin, I didn't see this in your review, so I assume the answer is "no", but I'll ask anyway: can you load/import your own POIs in iGuidance v4? |

Marvin, Do you what the iNav policy on re-activation will be if you are forced to reinstall V4 after a "factory" reset on the PDA (a "clean reset" on my HP IPAQ)? I have had to do this recently, and I hadn't done a backup. |

Yep, I'd like to know this also.
I also need to know if we'll be able to move the program from one device to another. I'm going to be buying a new PPC sometime in the near future, and want to know if I'll be able to move iG 4 to the new device. Or will iNav tell me I have to buy another copy? |

Thanks everyone!
Q. It is worth to be called v4?
A. Some software developers change full version numbers when they feel there has been a substantial functionality change/improvement. Some just do it annually. iGuidance seems to change its full version number when new map data is included. Version 2 included new map data, version 3 included new map data, and version 4 now includes new map data as well.
Q. Have you had a chance to review the routing?
A. I tested this only very briefly. Just like before, my recommendation would be to leave the routing preferences in the "Quickest" (Default) setting. Use the "Shortest", "Local", and "Major" with caution - these settings may not do what they were designed to do.
Q. Can you load/import your own POIs in iGuidance v4?
A. No. The POI related functionality in iG4 is identical to iG3. The improvement is the 5 times larger POI database (1.2 million POI's vs. 6 million POI's) and more categories and sub categories.
Q. Will this new "activation" allow me to move iG4 to a new device when I purchase one, or will I be able to install iG4 again after my device crashes, after a hard reset, after reformatting hard drive, etc?
A. Yes, it will be possible. I was going to cut & paste the part of the e-mail communication I had with iNav regarding this, but I cannot locate the e-mail on my home computer. The e-mail may be on my mobile PC to which I have no access today, nor will I have access to it tomorrow (The truck is in the repair shop ;-) But I do recall reading that it will be possible. I personally have not tested the software activation, as it was not yet fully implemented as of a few days ago.

I'm looking forward to the new version. My big question is how will the tts work with my Treo 700wx. I ask because early on with version 3, the announcements choked when the EVDO radio was active. i hope this isn't the case with version 4 with TTS. Does anyone have any insider info on this? Thanks, -Shane |

Does activation still allow install on both a PPC and a laptop at the same time? I only own one GPS receiver and usually use my v 2.1.3 with an Audiovox XV6600 Smartphone, but occasionally with a laptop.
Order website also now lists 1st week of July as ship date. Let hope this doesn't keep slipping like the last version. |

As much as I hate the activation process, I decided since iGuidance V4 has new maps to just order the software using the iNav Online Store order form for existing customers. After placing the order today, I noticed the following message "Thank you for your order. Each order generally takes 1-2 business days to be processed. Next-day orders placed before 12PM will be processed within 24 hours. V4 will ship 1st week of July. All software purchases are non-refundable. 15% restocking fee on approved returned hardware. RMA # required in advance prior to shipping back hardware. S/H fee non-refundable. To receive support and upgrade/update offers, be sure to register your software copy online via www.inavcorp.com/registration.php after you have installed the program.
Please check http://inavcorp.com/support/downloads.php for any updates/patches available by login w/ your ID & PW (created during your online registration). Please print this page for your records." |
