SiRF launches sensor based SiRFDiRect - Mobile DR
The impact of SiRFDiRect on the Mio A702 GPS PDAPhone After bringing high-sensitivity to the consumer market with SiRFstarIII in 2005, off-line Assisted GPS with SiRFinstantFix in 2006, SiRF has just announced SiRFDiRect, a sensor based technology to improve GPS accuracy on mobile devices in challenging environments.
While the user experience has been greatly improved with high-sensitivity chipsets (SiRFstarIII in 2005 and now MTK, Nemerix v3, uBlox), the problem of accuracy in challenging environment remains, particularly for pedestiran use, as can be seen in my recent Barcelona test run.
This type of improvement was already possible on in-dash systems with dead-reckoning. Mobile systems won't have the advantage of having a connection to the car tachymeter though and TomTom's attempt in 2004 with a two axis accelerometer on the GO v1 was a failure. Judging by the improvements (see above) shown on the new Mio A702 GPS PDAPhone, we're in for a treat this time !
