Garmin have just announced widescreen versions for their Nuvi 2xx entry-level family of AIOs, the regional 200W and continental 250W, no word on a 270W with NA+Europe yet. Other than the HD screen (16/9, 4" ,480x272) the feature set is identical to that of the SD (4/3, 3.5" 320x240) version ,so that means no option for RDS TMC or Bluetooth handsfree. MSRP in Europe is announced at €299 and €349 respectively and should help Garmin to compete with the more expensive TomTom ONE XL AIO (€399 with Europe), although it offers an optional RDS TMC receiver.

According to the garmin website, the 200 series do not speak the names of the roads. Does that mean they just beep when a turn is approaching like the GPSV or do they act more like the SP2610 and say "Right turn in 1.7 miles" without the street name?

At a tradeshow in Europe.
@GPSV - Like on the SP2610 (no power plug needed though!) full prompts except the TTS part, ie no pronunciation of the street name. |

| I just looked on Garmin's site and didn't see mention of this. Where did you hear it? What trade show? I was about to buy one but maybe I'll wait for this. When's it available? |

I wonder can you tell me one thing, I used to have the 2610 and then bought a 350 when it came out. The reason was for the POI ability which the 2610 didn't have.
Using it mainly with out motorhome, I miss a couple of things, but mainly the fact that the ability to chose the type of roads you prefer for a certain trip, like major roads, and NOT minor roads, etc., whereas with the Nuvi you only have shortest, fastest or off road...latter obviously no use to me...
I would love one with the ease of the 350 but with more ability to chose the type of roads - does this do it? Or is there another, I want to be able to put it in my bag and use it for walking in towns, my sense of direction is - well - I don't have any....
Would be interested to know if someone can tell me, because I must admit to finding it difficult to sort the differences out.

| Keep in mind that the news just came out and there is no test unit yet to answer these questions, but the software is most likely going to be identical to that of the 200, which in turn was very close (except to record a POI and the lack of sat screen) to the 350. |

Yes I guess the wide screen is nice, but it really should be oriented 90 degrees to it's current layout ie . in the direction of travel. I really want to see where I am going rather than all the side roads that I pass. It should be a "9x16 screen" format rather than a 16x9; Just my opinion.

Actually I was thinking of that the other after rotating the 16/9 screen of the Mio C520T in WinCE and it really looks odd!
Take a look at the SD vs HD comparison, HD does add quite a bit in terms of comfort. |

| The 2 links appear to be cached Google links from May 20th and the 2 models don't actually appear on Amazon any longer. |
