Thanks for getting the review pulled together for us. It sounds like there is no straightforward way to enter in the lat/lon for a waypoint other than scrolling through the digits. You mention a couple of of times that there is not support to download track and waypoint data from the device, but could you clarify if you can upload waypoint data to the device? If not hopefully both of these shortcomings will be addressed by a future software release of some kind. Thanks again for the scoop on this product!

You're quite welcome!
Actually data entry isn't too painful, that is if you're not doing it on the spot while...driving, j.k.!
Yes, for now neither uploading or downloading is possible. Doesn't seem like it's something they can't fix and I think it's more a case of coming up with the PC or PPC software.
It seems that the "Go To" mode was designed especially for you ;-)

Hey Great review! My use for such a device would be connected to a PDA for driving directions/in the car, but would probably use it as stand alone for hiking/geocaching.
For this reason I would like to ask about accuracy. Does it seem as accurate as most other consumer level GPS's? Also, is there a way to do averaging of your position? While I know it isn't scientific, on some tough cache hunts I found it useful to stand still, average my position with my Garmin III+, note that, go forward on the bearing, repeat, etc. May be tricking myself, but the increasing accuracy of averaging the position seemed to help.
Can the gpsmart handheld do averaging as a menu option?

An excellent review. Many thanks. My questions are from the viewpoint of a geocacher.
1) What map datum does it use? If it is only the one is it WGS-84? 2) Can it display the lat/long in decimal minutes or is it only degrees-minutes-seconds? Decimal minutes look like N52 34.234
Thanks |

Thanks for this review.
Just to clarify, the FortunaSmart Bluetooth can NOT transfer tracklogs to the PC? This is a monumental flaw, if true. How can you do any analysis of a recorded tracklog with such a limitation?

In the update to the review is says you have the new firmware.
I cannot find this anywhere.... Is it out for the general public?? If so, where can I locate this?
TIA! |

I bought the GPS from Semsons. I've also ordered the Fortuna USB cable from them. Hopefully I'll have it in a couple of days. Has anyone noticed the transmission of data pausing during a Bluetooth connection to a PDA/laptop ? I've got my GPS connected to my laptop and read the incoming NMEA strings via a Java program at the 38400 baud rate.
Everything works great, except that the data transmission seems to pause sometimes and then continue. I wonder if there is some buffering going on. I don't notice the pausing when I connect to a GPS via a serial cable and the 4800 baud rate transmission setting. |

Where did you get the upgrade firmware from ? Or was the GPS unit already upgraded to the fixed firmware version ?
Thanks |

No, I haven't tried Semsons. I couldn't find any upgrade information on their web page. Have they said that they would upgrade the unit ?
Thanks
