UPDATED 20070823 BY GPSPASSION - it seems the "June 1st New Update Policy" came and went, back to the "old" update policy, see page 2 of this thread for details.
Anyone familiar with Garmin changing their policy with regards to unlock codes? Interesting. |

OR.....also still on the Garmin site
"Your MapSource coupon or registration code is valid for use with your own Garmin GPS unit. This agreement provides a one-user license, and it is illegal to share this data with others. If you own multiple unlock compatible Garmin GPS units and have unlocked maps to one, you are generally allowed to unlock the same maps to one other compatible Garmin unit you own for no additional charge. (See our Unlock FAQ page for further details.) HOWEVER, this is NOT applicable to models which come with detailed maps pre-loaded and without CD or DVD-ROM's in the packages."
Informative discussion over at GroundSpeak on this subject.
If you would like to obtain additional regions or utilize more than two Garmin GPS units, you will need to purchase another code for each unit.

| I was actually to point out in the nuvi 250 thread that there was no "yellow sheet" with the unlock code in the box of my test unit, so it seems that new rule is being enforced the "hard way"...not sure how it will be possible to obtain map updates for free of for pay though. Another possibility is that the "yellow sheet" was removed for my test unit, but it hadn't been for previous models. |

And now there is an "official????" reply from Garmin regarding the policy changes:
"QUOTE
It has come to our attention that there is some confusion about our current MapSource and unlock code procedures. The following bullet points attempt to provide clarification:
# MapSource City Navigator North America NT 2008 (which is not available for purchase yet but will be shortly) has a one-user license and is valid for use with one Garmin GPS. (Ed. It seems Garmin loves to constantly confuse consumers - the Mapsource detailed map upgrade nomenclature is changing once again? I would have expected this update to be called City Navigator North America NT v9)
# Those who have purchased a Garmin device without preloaded maps (such as the GPSMAP 60-series or eTrex series) and MapSource City Navigator North America v8 or older software are entitled to unlock one additional device that they own for no additional charge.
# Customers with MapSource BlueChart CD data are entitled to unlock two Garmin devices with the identical BlueChart region(s). The two Garmin devices must be owned by the same individual who owns the MapSource BlueChart CD.
# Garmin no longer offers free map updates, including customers with a Garmin device with preloaded maps (such as a StreetPilot or nüvi)."
(Ed. I guess they finally figured out they were being screwed with users delaying registration until a new map update was announced)
For additional questions or clarification, please contact Garmin's product support at customer.support@garmin.com
Thank you,
Garmin International

Could be a high-end/low-end choice then, or a "cut-off" problem
"Garmin no longer offers free map updates" - not even under the old rules ? i.e : if a new map was announced before you purchased your unit/maps ? That's really bad news, since it gave Garmin the edge over the competition. So instead of enforcing the existing rule they are taking the easy way out... |

I just went to the Garmin unlock site and got my 2nd FREE unlock code from my CN NA v8 and registered it with my old IQue 3600, which still has CS NA v6 maps just for the principle of it. Now, this 2nd unlock was associated with my SP 2730 and not my Nuvi 680, FWIW.
I do believe it was always Garmin's policy that if you received or bought (i.e. unlocked) a newer version of a Mapsource product and had not already used your 2nd unlock code from the previous version it was lost forever. |

I understand that this was abused by some but this is going to piss people of that get old maps on a new unit because a store hasn't moved a lot of Garmin units. I can see this causing a lot of returns if people get units with outdated maps. |

Garmin seem to have a unique anti-customer-care policy and a very greedy way of going around their unlock code policy for their GPS units like the 60c 60csx and suchlike. I read somewhere that by pissing people off in this way will come back and bite them on the ass! coz someone will figure out their source code and can you believe! just a few weeks AFTER I bought my software city navigator NT v9 from Garmin, I found just such a guy! If you see me buying lottery tickets, do yourself a favour and cross them OFF your list. (just call me mr unlucky). Oh well, got to go, busy sending gmail... GPSBloke |

I don't think there was any real abuse, so I don't give Garmin any credit here. I seem to recall that there was a 3-month limit on the upgrade. If you bought the unit within 3 months prior to the upgrade, you could get it for free. That put an automatic limit on the abuses.
My issue with all of this is lost value. If you buy the unit one month before the upgrade is available, then you get only one month of use of that version before you have to pay for the upgrade. Meanwhile, a person who buys it after the new version is loaded, gets an entire year of use of that version. I always understood that that was the reason for the 3-month policy. So, they should sell the unit for less money, if software is old.
I wonder if Garmin has some changes in upper management. |

I just called Garmin Friday. If you now purchase a Street Finder (don't know what other units policy includes) with a pre-loaded map after the release date of a new version you will NO LONGER be entitled to a free upgrade to the newest version. This creates a real "buyer beware" situation. I was in a West Marine a few months ago and that store still had a version 7 unit. Won't the person who buys that be surprised? Watch out for units with V8 being "on sale" and it will be no sale at all.

While I agree completely that buyers should always be aware of what version of electronic devices they are purchasing, I disagree that it will be "no sale at all."
Some Garmin users opt not to buy map updates every single year. So if the unit is sufficiently discounted and the retailer is being honest about the map version, what's the big problem? Next year you can upgrade for $75 anyway.

Dan, I agree in some cases but 1) not all customers are educated 2) not all retailers are honest 3) how many retailers and especially clerks are going to be aware that there is no longer a free update after purchase for previous pre-loaded versions?
Maybe some retailers are beginning to dump V8. Circuit City just had C330(new units) on sale in stores and on-line(free shipping)for the lowest price they have ever had and are now selling refurb units for the same price on line. A friend went to three stores and all were sold out. Clerk said they "flew off the shelves". Your right, there will be some sales.
Other than guesses, anyone have any inside info on the 2008(V9) date on the shelves? |

We don't really disagree. The cure for #2 and #3 is to address #1 [grin], so this forum is hopefully doing its part thanks to helpful and knowledgeable contributors like yourself.
I have no inside info (Garmin is never loose-lipped about such things), but looking at the unlock page does provide clues. Last year it was early fall, I believe, when v8 actually hit the streets.

| Units with the 2008 (V9)map are already being shipped to stores per Garmin. This would indicate that the production line has switched over. This seems to explain the shelf emptying sale by Circuit City with others likely to follow. The DVD update is not available yet but will likely be shortly. |
