Too bad they don't have a customizable POI database or red light/speed camera database. And 1.6 million is pretty small compared to the competition (is that 1.6 million total, or 1.6 million MORE POIs??).

| I was hoping it would come out before June 1st as I will be driving cross-country on the family vacation. Oh well... |

How does this different from the "Intellinav ONE" AIO released a couple months back? Sorry to say this but this sounded so much like a repackaging deal to me than progress.
I've been a iGuidance user since 2.1 and would really like to see their new version to demonstrate more competitive advantage than say iGO/Miomap. |

Sound like exciting news as new version 4 of iGuidance with new maps and name of street will be part of the voice iguidance!
My laptop will have this new version hopefully sometime in June along with a new version of Streets&Trips hopefully sometime in August. :-) |

| No Map Loader sounds like a step backwards, not a fan of that. |
Thanks |

I agree. I'm not interested in that as I doubt my X5 will be able to run it without slowing to a crawl. They should leave the maploader in, at least for PocketPC's.
@ Marvin - Semsons says there will be "around 6 Mil" POI. Not 1.6 Mil. Or do you know something they don't? |

| Could either be a typo or they have more up-to-date info. My info is from 05/10/2007. I hope they are correct, though! |

| well, if they are going to make you load 2G on your SD, I really hope they have worked out their memory issues with displaying more than 10m zoom levels on a PDA. If you have to travel diagonally and leave the interstate system, iG is a serious pain. I've had iG forever and didnt realize the trouble I was going thru to make sure I could see my route was correct (on PDA). All I needed was more zoom out. I've been using Garmin XT now, it has some great features, but it was the ability to see the entire route that attracted me. |

| Wait... So if I never drive out west, I'm gonna have to waste 2G on my card carrying around useless data? |

It doesn't sound like a good idea, does it? But several years down the road, when an average device will have much greater storage space available than devices of today, then this is going to be a non-issue.
P.S. iG 4 hasn't been released yet, so perhaps let's just wait a bit to see the final product. Perhaps there is going to be some alternative solution for users with less storage space. |

UPDATE:
* It will require 2GB SD card but actual data will only take up to 1.1GB, so users still have 800-900MB (40%) free on their SD card to store other files.
* The reduced data (from 2.2GB in pre-v4 versions down to 1.1GB in v4) itself is not due to "compression" but a revamp of the program code itself.
* A quick Google search reveals 2GB SD memory cards can be purchased these days for less then $20. See here: ...google.com/products?q=2gb%20sd...
* Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands map will also be included
* Yes, 6 million POI's (not 1.6)
* Deletion of initial warning screen only applies to umpc/car pc/laptop versions
(I'm going to update the first post on this page accordingly.)
I think, since only 1.1GB is required, it does make more sense now to get rid of the map generation process to simplify the experience for new users, or less technically inclined users. |

| No map loader confirmed then. That's too bad, a definite step backwards. Whether I have space or not, and whether the cards are cheap or not, I just don't like wasting space on info I would never use. And as I mentioned in another thread, no doubt, the speed of looking up addresses will be slower because of the bigger database - especially if you search by streets first (they'd better not remove that ability!). |

| PDAs are sorta dying. I think UMPC and smartphone will have priority in design and features. They are developing for AIOs and OEMs, as they always have. Given that, our SD card real estate isnt really an issue to them. PDA users, like myself, will find ourselves just lucky to have choices. I dont know about your area, but here, you cant find a windows mobile PDA in any retail stores (even CUSA). So, I'm just thankful if they dont leave me out of their next version. Not to say I dont have high expectations for the features as well. |

I totally agree. I actually see the smart phone as replacing it. Sort of a weaker PDA with a phone included. That's why I see the UMPC as eventually gaining traction to plug the "new" hole in the gadget lineup -- If we consider the phone-PDA-Laptop-Desktop as the current weak to powerful lineup, the new one will be smart phone-UMPC-Laptop-Desktop, and if UMPCs really take off, it will be smart phone-UMPC-Desktop (Don't laugh... in 5 years UMPCs will do everything today's notebooks do).
I'll miss the PDA, and HATE the smart phone. |
