A low price, but it keeps the nüvi "touch"
SD Slot for extra maps or pictures
 The famous "dashboard"
 Easy POI recording

Original message by ZX14NINJA : Got my hands on the new 250's last week. Very slick little unit indeed. SirfStar technology, thought not advertised in any way except on the 1st boot-up screen and next to the 660, performs identically as far as Sat acquisition times and accuracy goes. Sexier and thinner than the 350, a bit heavier and a way cooler form factor. Screen brightness and angle/sunlight fade beats the 350 and in fact is closer to the 660, just a tad less bright. Screen resolution is lower than the 350, but very acceptable in any case. Doesn't come with the A/C adapter or the leather case and is packaged with a non-powered cradle, but still, a very nice offering from Garmin. Same mapping and POI's as the 350's...slightly faster on route calculations than the 660 and also features separate screen brightness settings for day and night modes. IMO, a much cooler looking unit than the 350. I'd like to see the 4.3 version and an MP3 player with an external output. Speaker has much greater audio quality with way more high end definition than any previous nuvi's. All in all, a great little package! |

| What do you mean by "packaged with a non-powered cradle"? |

| I thought they weren't using Sirf chipset on the 2xx series. Can you take photos of the 250 and 350 to show the size differences? |

I bought a nuvi 200 last week at Circuit City. I'm a bit confused with the models. Mine has only the lower 48 states.

From the Garmin website:
"nüvi 200 comes preloaded with City Navigator® NT map data for the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico (no Alaska or Canada detail) or one European region or country."
The Nuvi 250 appears to have all of North America (US including Alaska, Canada, Puerto Rico and Hawaii). In other words the full City Navigator North America NT maps. |

Got my nuvi 205 test unit too !
I was concerned from the early pictures that it was more generic than the 3xx series, but in fact not, same finish and "grid" in the back.
When it came out, the big question was whether it had a SiRFstarIII chipset and not the rumoured MTK chipset but it's hard to tell as both offer very similar performance, see this comparison. I tried to open it to get to the bottom of this question but the screws are too tight for my tools...As ZX14NINJA points out it does say "SiRF 2007" on the boot screen, but the logos are gone from the box.
I agree that the screen is different, not as sharp although the resolution is the same at 320x240 and not as bright.
Back to some more testing ! |

| Why would you have "SiRF 2007" info on boot screen, if it had another chip set? |
Previously owned : GPS "eTrex Yellow" "GPSmap 76S" "GPSMap 60CS" "GPSMAP 60CSx" "Nüvi 660" Unit I have now :"Nüvi 760 EU" "Nüvi 765" "Edge 305" "Colorado 300" |

| That's the point we both made, but then why has Garmin stopped referring to SiRF and removed the logo ? Maybe they had to backtrack, anyway, unless other information comes up it's safe to assume it has a SiRFIII chipset, not "ship set" ;-) |

I looked at the 250 and a 350 side-by-side at Circuit City. The screen on the 250 looked much brighter than the 350. Did you find otherwise?
By the way, does anyone know if the screen on the Nuvi 360 is the same as on the 350?
Thanks,
KJF |

When comparing, you've got to make sure you're using the same brightness settings, best is to use 100%. UPDATE : well...the settings had reverted back to 50% on mine so disregard the previsous comment, see below for a comparison with the "ultrabrite" 660.
Oddly enough, the satellite screen present on all the nüvis so far is gone, like on the C series.
Back to the GPS chipset, there is one big difference between the 250 and the 300/660 in that the speed is not "frozen" on the 250 when you're standing still, it changes all the time as is normal given the natural inaccuracies of a GPS system but this is generally hidden as it is confusing to see the arrow moving when you're not This is something the SiRF "SN" (static navigation) setting does, more about that here. Maybe Garmin have deactivated the SN seting because they considered that the 250 would be used on foot. |

The drift issue is something we all saw on earlier firmwares on the 350's and other older units, back in the day. My suspect is that it's the same bug and that it will be corrected in future firmware revisions. I called Garmin to mention this issue to them.
Red Rover -- "non powered cradle" means that the USB plug can only be plugged into the unit directly; not the cradle, like the 3XX/6XX series.
Kflint -- The 250 does have a brighter screen than the 350 and it does not fade from any angle, except from the bottom up, just like a 660. |

| I saw them both at Circuit city also. Maybe the brightness setting had been messed with, but the 200 was markedly brighter than the 350. |

Yes, they have a miniUSB connector so it's convenient if you can leave the mount in place at all times. Same on the 660. I guess it's a way for Garmin to cust costs/segment their offer, not sure it's a very good idea, the user looses out in the end.
So back to the brightness and I guess one should always check that they're doing what they "preach" and sure enough, I realized this morning that my 250 test unit had defaulted back to 50% brightness for some reason, hence my comment about brightness...sorry for any confusion and to make up for it, here are some comparison shots of the 250 next to the "ultrabrite" 660, in direct sun light and indirect sunlight and it does almost just as well really.

Yes, but I have never heard about a cradle, for the 3xx series...
At least, my 310 didn't have one, and none is listed in the accessories list. |
