I have found on a very good Italian site, the program to unlock (so to speak) the C220. I wanted to start a thread in english to hopfully get some more intrest in opening up the capabilities of the C220.
Here is the site http://foro.todopocketpc.com/showthread.php?p=936930#post936930 It is a C250 site but the script and program works great on my C220 US model from Circuit City.
Here is what I could get from the google translator and my personal experiance. This script and setup gives you a new front interface with winCE 5.0 usability and a set of bundled apps. Our good friend Antonio provides a great little set of scripts and apps to allow you to play MP3 and video, and view pics. You get a file explorer and system utilities. The mio digiwalker software works great when in the new shell so it is to me as good as the C310x but with updated maps and faster 3d screens.
Please check it out, it is pretty good. If you are a programer you may be able to enhance it further. Just tryin' to spread the word for anyone looking to get an entry level MIO and add MP3, etc... support.

| Could you be more specific as to what c310 customizatios are working for the c220 / c250. I have changed my backgroup picture and added some ICONS in place of the ones bundled from antionios script. Any sites you know of with c220 / c250 mods would be greatly appreciated! |

To kturley Could you please tell us your steps to unlock the C220 in English if you have time. Since you have already succeed and Spanish from that site is hard for many people. |

kturley, Thanks for the link. I got my C220 unlocked and the it works fine for the videos and MP3s. I haven't done to much with it yet. I just got it this evening. I was able to get nonigpsplot to run off a SD card. This was the first application I tried to get to work on it that was not in the script. Here is how I did it. I used a program called cabinstal on my Dell axim to install the program on a SD card. I took the SD card out of the axim and put it in the C220. I used the explorer to goto the directory I created and ran the nonigpsplot.exe file. The only thing I had to change was the gps settings to port 2. It is nice to know that we can add additional programs to it.

Here is the english read me.txt file for using the script. You will need to download the TRANSFER MIO C250 Hack file and the script files first from the link that kturley provided.
** Application manager for Mio DigiWalker C250 ***
It's a collection of applications for a visual and accessibility interface upgrade of the MioMap DigiWalker C250 model. An algorithm is also provided for an automatic interface recover in case of a complete reset (hard reset).
The installation is not particulary hard if the detailed instructions are followed:
1. First make a "hard reset" (press the start button for at least 6 seconds) and restart the device without pressing any more button.
2. Launch "Mio Transfer Hack C250" (watch out, not "Mio Transfer Hack"!!!) and in case a "\My Flash Disk\Script" directory is present, DELETE it.
3. Rename "\My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap" directory into "MioMap2", so that the directory tree becomes "\My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap2".
4. Create a directory named "MioMap" in the path "\My Flash Disk\MioMap\Miomap" so that in place of the first directory "MioMap" there are now two directories, "MioMap" and "MioMap2". In the "MioMap2" directory are located the navigator original files --> DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING HERE. Ending this step this structure has to be present:
My Flash Disk | |MioMap | |MioMap <-- Files needed for the unlocking |MioMap2 <-- Original files
Now copy the "MioMap" directory files of the compressed archive in the "MioMap" directory just created. (Watch out it's the second directory "MioMap"!!!).
5. Create a "Script" directory in the "\My Flash Disk" directory and copy the "Script" directory files [of the compressed archive] in this one [just created], so that the directory tree results like is shown:
My Flash Disk | |Script <-- Files
6. When all files are copied, close "Mio Transfer Hack C250" pressing the EXIT button.
7. MAKE A HARD RESET.
8. After turning on the device, press on "MioMap". A file manager will open. We have to go to "\My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap" directory and launch the "AUTOPATCHER.exe" file. An information window will open saying the system has been recalled. Press OK and the system will restart.
9. After the restart, the application interface will be launched except if a memory card with a "\2577\" directory and an "autorun.exe" file is present. In that case, after the restart THAT file will be launched. This is useful if we want to try some applications which have to be renamed into "autorun.exe". If we don't want this file to be executed, take off the memory card and restart.

The script isn't really an unlock. I've been mucking with it for a few days now and it isn't very useful. It basically replaces the ppath.txt file in the Windows folder, replaces some bitmap files, plays a startup sound to make you feel like you actually accomplished something and puts some executable files in the scripts folder of the Flash Disk.
It doesn't even do a very good job with ppaths.txt as it cannot load miomap based on it's own instructions. To get the Mio icon to do anything you have to edit script.mscr in the scripts folder to point to MioMap2 which the instructions point you to rename.
I was unimpressed with this script. It seems you can accomplish the same thing by mucking with ppath.txt and customizing mioshell.exe.
It is a start tho and I would love to get a C220 unlock script going.
I can't even use skins on my 220. MioMap displays them rotated and on the bottom half of the screen. |

I used one of my camera's USB cords.
I ran the script; I got it to boot up into the "mini" Windows CE mode.
The mp3 capability was disappointing. I tried using the headphones and could't get enough volume with the levels maxed out. The jpg capability was also disappointing.
I would need an app I could manage contacts and a schedule with to make this worthwhile for me. Also, maybe a way to increase MP3 playback volume.
I did have fun though. In the end, since it's still in the 14 day return window, I successfully reset everything back to factory. Now I know I can undo if I need to.
If you can help with this then cool: 1. More volume, 2. Contacts and schedule app. |

Define "mini" CE. Are you talking about the screen with the speedometer and some icons for playing mp3, etc.?
That's not CE. Thats just a menu created by the script. You can easily get into CE by replacing miomap.exe with a file manager and letting the unit call that exe when you start MioMap.
The C310 scripts don't seem to work on this unit and I am not sure why. They don't really do much besides modify the init keys in the registry to load something other than mioshell, copy some dll's to the windows directory, and copy some utilites to the flash disk. Maybe I have to read a little bit more into what the script is actually changing on the unit but from what I see it's a fairly simple script. Would be nice if it worked on the C220. |

OK for a second there I thought I had done something wrong and you were able to actually unlock your unit.
This script is a start in the right direction. We can make it better tho. |

Maybe I'll have to create my own contacts/scheduler app. |

Not sure about the contact issue. But for the MP3 volume control try going under options and select Audio --> Preamp increase.
It will increase the volume. However, on the MP3s I tried it will cause some distortion when the volume is maxed out.

C310Auto can be renamed or changed to fully unlock Cx20 as well. But still need a few modification and I don't have a device to test on.
Here is a little tip for you. Although I've not had this fully tested yet. Assuming you're using the package in post #1, get CECMD, FileMangerCE or any file manager you like and rename it as MioAutoRun.exe. Put MioAutoRun.exe in the root of Storage Card. Put the whole package there as well. Now hard reset your C220 (hold power for a few seconds), and behold file manager appearing in front of you. No need for a PC / Mio Transfer Hack / ppath.exe replacement, etc.
Kindly report any bugs / problems please.
