I have a Nuvi 350. Given the steep price of a City Navigator NT Europe SD Card, and assuming that these cards can be used on anyone's compatible Nuvi, and in view of the fact that most of us who travel to Europe do so at best once per year or less, is there an owner of one of these cards who would be willing to work out a rental arrangement with me to use their card for a trip to France and Italy in May/June for a fee? |

Notice that this works ONLY if it's a pre-programmed card, as these cards have unlock codes associated with the card itself, not with the GPS you are using it in. If you install a copy of a map on a card, where your unlock code is for your specific GPS, it will work in your GPS ONLY. |

Thanks. I should have specified that I was speaking about a pre-programmed card. Unless someone tells me something differently, I assume I can use a pre-programmed CN Navigator NT Europe SD Card that is compatible with any Nuvi 350.
Anyone out there with such a card (.v9) who paid huge bucks while it gathers dust awaiting your next adventure trip to Europe that wants to work out a reasonable rental of the card for a trip I'm taking with my wife in May/June? You recoup some of your expense, and I don't have to pay a minimum of about $280 USD for maps for a trip I might not make again for a few years. |

I'm intrigued by your idea but also see some potential problems. I don't see any language in Garmin's TOU which would specifically prohibit this, but we both know they wouldn't exactly be happy about it either.
First is that a limited number of people buy the maps on a pre-programmed card because it is more economical to buy the DVD.
Second is that you will need to establish a fair amount of trust for the transaction to work -- what incentive beyond normal ethics and decency [shudder] is there for me to return the card to you after I rent it? What if I damage the card so it is unreadable? What if it gets lost in shipping or stolen while I'm on vacation?

Dan,
I have no doubt that Garmin would be less than happy to have purchasers of their SD cards working out an exchange program - I wouldn't blame them. I wouldn't even consider the prospect were it not for my view that their pricing of this accesory is way out of line compared to other Garmin products and accessories - I'm not into ripping anyone off, and individuals or business entities should be paid for their ideas and products. Moreover, I am definitely not interested doing anything unlawful or patently improper.
That said, I'm not into becoming a passive victim of poor business practices and the pricing of this SD card for the amount of useage someone like me is likely to gain ( I was last in Europe in 2003) is, IMHO, a rip. So, if I can responsibly work out some kind of "compromise", I'm all over it.
Lastly, for the amount of money involved, I wouldn't think a SD card lender wants to go to a great deal of trouble to develop contracts or other formal mechanisms to protect his or her investment. I think if the idea has merit to a prospective lender, it's done not only to recover some of his or her cost but in part to publicly register a protest to Garmin for their excessive pricing of this product. The lender might want some public promise(I mean that it's done in the forum with name of the renter, town or city of residence)from the renter of the date of return, a promise of replacement for a lost or damaged card, and perhaps even a reference or two of the borrower to feel more assured that the renter is legitimate and trustworthy.

Phil:
All good points (though taking my moderator's hat off for a second, I don't personally agree that the price set by a company justifies any action on our part other than deciding whether to pay it).
Putting that hat back on, we would need to take a very careful look at whether this forum could or should host such an exchange. Map swapping (prohibited here) is in many important ways different from what you are proposing, but it also is similar enough to make me want to examine whether this discussion can continue here. For now, yes, so just a friendly heads up that this issue is on my mind.
