This was posted today (March 21) in the FAQ of the MIO website:
Mio Technology continues to ready our release of an updated map for our current customers. unfortunately sometimes good things take a bit longer than planned. The new Tele Atlas maps are robust and arguably one of the best digital maps ever commercially developed. In order to give our customers the best possible map update experience, we are working to create an easy way have your Mio DigiWalker™ updated this Spring. Please continue to check our website in the near future for map pricing and availabilityhttp://www.mio-tech.com .

| I bet they want to release their New Models(in April) before they give a upgrade! |

"map pricing and availability" That doesn't sound promising for a free map update to current owners.
I bet they're trying to figure out how to sell the map update without users copying it. |

I agree with Amesdp. The original igo software is hard coded to a SD card, but if they release the map update using a SD card, then people will complain because there will be no space to store the MP3 files. They could release the DVD though but that is very easily transferred from computer to computer, unless they employ some sort of activation that one DVD can only be installed on one computer and the map transfer can work with one device only.
Either way, it doesn't look like the map update will be free, and I'm very disappointed to find that out. Honestly everything with mio is great so far except the map. |

One thing I know is that TeleAtlas has a lot of work ahead to create a decent map of the province of Québec. The map shown by MapInsight is much more complete than the present MIO map. But it is also the worst collection of typos I have seen. Most street and POI names are in French and data entry was obviously done by people with no knowledge of French. There are also many parameterization problems like showing Avenue 1 instead of 1 Avenue. I wrote a long letter to TeleAtlas a month ago and they kindly acknowledged the fact that they must correct the situation and that it will require a significant amount of work. I do not think they were aware of any of the problems I submitted. Obviously none of those corrections will be part of a Spring release by MIO.
Looking at MapInsight today, I realized that many villages are many kilometers away from their real location! I am waiting for a reply from TeleAtlas. Is it the map, the tool or the database? Has someone seen that elsewhere? |

| Hmmm....Could a person simply order one of the maps from Teleatlas or Navteq instead of waiting for Mio who now seems to be charging for the maps? |

| No. Mio and Tom Tom both use TeleAtlas maps, but each requires a unique map file format. You could use iGo maps, but iGo hasn't announced an update either. |

I just bought my mio a week ago after calling and finding out that I would get the updates free. I have also influenced 4 friends since then to buy a mio and told each about the map updates in April.
If mio does not distribute them for free, I will consider it a breach of contract(verbal) and be extremely agitated at their policy reversal. |
Thanxx! (c310x-4GB, MP-v48) |

| Not surprised - why do you think they give the unit away? MS looses money on every 360 they sell. Cell phone providers loose tons of dough when you buy from them. It is all about aftermarket sales, service, etc.... People buy a low ball GPS then want everything else free as well. That doesn't happen. I would not be surprised if they charge for map updates. As long as the charge is reasonable I'd do it. |

| When the maps are updated are the POIs updated as well? Not necessarily new location/phone no. if there's been that change, but more POIs. |

Am I the only one that's optimistic about this? I have a feeling what it meant was Mio-tech is working on their web infra-structure so that we can have a web update like the European counterpart. FWIW, Mio-tech has relied on web-update in Asia for all its map updates, too. IMHO, I'd have asked network / software engineers starting on this at least 1~2 months ahead of time for a thorough bandwidth test.
However, all this is just my conjecture. It is as good as reading from tea leaves. |

The Multinet Canada 2007.1 datasheet available on TeleAtlas Web site claims that their Canadian map covers all streets.
It also says that that 59 % of the population benefits from Fully attributed maps (seems to mean that 41 % is not as exact as it could be according to their explanation of the term found somewhere else). In USA they claim 100% instead of 59%. I do not know if the comparison test mentioned above would have given the same results in Canada. |

I am also optimistic about the FREE upgrade. I wonder how big the new map database is. It is supposed to be more accurate, more detail, and has more POI... so must be bigger in size... MIO may have hard time trying to compress it to fit it into the 1GB C310X... with the old map, there is only 30MB left... |

OnCourseNavigator 6 (OCN6), which is also a clone of iGo, is shipping now with the TeleAtlas USA and CANADA maps 2007.01: http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/forum/default.aspx?f=5&m=5287
Since these are the same maps as used by MioMap, I hope we should expect update from Mio very soon, and it should be 2007.01 version - newer than 2006.10 used by TomTom. |

| Does OnCourseNavigator 6 use the same file format that Mio does? Or is this the same scenerio as Mio and TomTom, both using TeleAtlas maps but different file formats? |

| OnCourseNavigator 6 is basically the same software - it's a clone of iGo/MioMap (look at their home page). |
