When I try to power up my MIO C310x, I get a blue screen with the following
UTool S2x0_F R36 1GB 0=WINCE Upgrade 1=UBOOT Upgrade 2=BT Test 3=Other Tools Choice 0
I can't select anything, and soft and hard resets do nothing.
What do I do? |

| Return it for a replacement. There's something definitely wrong with yours. |

This screen can be "forced" by doing a Hard reset and immediately pressing the Soft reset button. I only tried it once, then tried a soft reset to exit the screen- wrong, but thanks for playing anyway. It appeared that depressing the Soft Reset button selected Option 0, it told me it was "waiting for USB input". I IMMEDIATELY (within the known limits of human reaction time) did a Hard Reset which exited me from the screen and back to normal.
It may be that your Soft Reset button is "stuck", have you tried 'goosing' it a bit? Nothing to lose at this point.
FYI, mine actually says something slightly different (I have ROM version R36F.3.103.1114)
Edit: OK, working up some courage, I decided to press onward- held the Soft reset button down while doing a Hard reset:
WINCE Upgrade
0=WINCE by USB 1=WINCE by SD/MMC 2=WINCE by USB (Quickly) 3=Exit Choice:0
The "Power" key cycles between the choices, and it turns out that the "select" key to actually implement it is the "Soft Reset" button. Pressing "Soft reset" with Choice 3 selected leads you to another screen:
Utool S2x0_F R36 1GB
0=WINCE Upgrade 1=UBOOT Upgrade 2=BT Test 3=Other Tools Choice=0
Continuing (I'm doing this real time...), using the Soft Reset button to select Choice #3, we get yet another menu:
Other Tools
0=Memory Test 1=ROM Checksum 2=Gps Test 3=Gps Updating 4=Download FAT Raw 5=Upload FAT Raw 6=Format Flash for BINFS 7=NAND_Tools 8=Exit
Do I dare proceed - hey, in the interests of science, why not...
Well, I tried the Soft reset key on Choice 0, it did a "walking bit" and "writing 0's" memory test. I then tried to use the Power key to cycle to the other choices, it wouldn't let me do it (I might have just been impatient) so I did a Hard Reset and worked my way back to this menu. Used the Power key then to select Choice 8 (Exit) - this takes you back to the "UTool S2x0" menu.
Working my way back to the last menu, I selected Choice 7: NAND_Tools:
At the bottom of the screen (menu still visible), appeared a 3-line display:
NAND Flash Tools NAND Flash Check Ecc Block xxxx
The "xxxx' started counting upwards at about 20 blocks/second, obviously doing a diagnostic, stopping at 8191 (2^13). Pressing the Power button twice appeared to get me back into the selection mode.
OK, I've played enough. Didn't do anything destructive, but didn't push my luck either. Anybody else out there with the cajones to continue? We have a genuine "Easter egg" here (and just in time for Easter...), all we need to do is explore it further.

Thanks so much for trying to walk through it.
I can't get the on/off button or the soft reset button to do anything. The first item just stays highlighted.

here is the cajones.
i have been working on getting a full version of wince to load up and this blue screen was way helpful. but now i have a few question.
i did a download of the FATP.bin but I'm unable to read this file any ideas on how to read this?
also this blue screen is just like a safe boot on your windows cpu. we might get this PDA to take a full load of WINCE 5.0 looking in the spec sheets to find out if the cpu will be able to handle this new os.
any ideas

@jvoss - I haven't done this in ages, but if you can find some software that works with an eeprom programmer (I have some from the DOS days somewhere...), or possibly WinHex, either of those should import binary files. I'm sure there are some better tools also and someone is bound to chime in. |

some luck.
the .bin file looks to be the full 1gb on the mio. if i could read this i could input an upload. just did a full format and then a restore and presto the thing works. so this blue screen is a way in to the updating and mod of the os.
next i have to get a full version of wince 4.2 or 5.0 or even better 6.0 any idea where to get for a cheap price?
as for the eeprom programmer the file i downloaded was way to big for that. but i will keep looking at this from all points of view. most eeproms now days can be done In-Circuit so most people should be able to do this once i figure out what this .bin file is.
any idea on a program to read or mount a .bin file?
keep the information flowing.

Here's an idea- there's an old DOS program called "bin2hex.exe" that does literally that, converts binary files to hexadecimal files (hex files look like text). There's another program out there called WinHex that can maybe then edit it. I probably have these on a hard drive somewhere, haven't used them in probably 10 years.
Another option is to "split" the 1GByte file into smaller chunks editable by an eprom program. I don't know that anyone has memory-mapped the C310x yet, but the WinCE portion is certainly a lot smaller.
Yet another brain-phart: How about a "low level" disk editor to look at the file? Didn't Norton use to have one of those? In the old DOS days there were tools that could edit the Boot partitions, etc. My idea would be to load the file you have in a 1Gbyte Flash Drive and see if the disk editor will find it?
See THIS thread on how some guys are editing large hex files (Hex Workshop, another oldie but goodie).
Sorry my info on this is so dated...
No idea where to get a copy of embedded WinCE other than a ROM dump from another PPC, and there are almost certainly licensing issues associated with that.
I'll be out of town starting the morning of 3/22 until late evening 3/25 (EST), going where they can barely spell email, let alone use it. Hopefully the other kiddies on the Forum will place nice in my absence... |

I use HexEdit (by Catch22) for the PC. Download from here: http://www.catch22.net/software/hexedit.asp
Unzip it to a folder and just run the exe, no installation needed. It can look at and edit any file up to 4GB. |

I have Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC ROM upgrade. It is in one file nk.nbf with size: 33554496 bytes You need to have Active Sync installed on your PC. Then double click "HimaUpgradeUt.exe" to upgrade ROM. I did not do this as it is a risky process and I got only one Mio C310x. Anyone wants to upgrade his system? |

After the firmware upgrade (using R37F.3.103.1215), the "Blue screen" menus almost the same. They are:
(Remember, select an item with the "Sleep" On/Off button on the side of the C310x, and "do" the selected item by pressing the Soft-Reset button again.)
UTool S2x0F R39 1GB [Main Menu] 0=WINCE Upgrade 1=UBOOT Upgrade 2=BT Test 3=Other Tools
I am guessing that this means we have a 1GB internal flash. Selecting "0" by accident:
WINCE Upgrade [menu] 0=WINCE by SD/MMC(format) 1=WINCE by SD/MMC 2=WINCE by USB 3=WINCE by USB(format) 4=Exit
UBOOT Upgrade [menu] 0=UBOOT by USB 1=UBOOT by SD/MMC 2=Exit
I did not try "BT Test"
Other Tools [menu] 0=Memory Test 1=ROM CheckSum 2=Gps Test 3=Gps Updating 4=Download FAT Raw 5=Upload FAT Raw 6=Format FLASH for BINFS 7=NAND_Tools 8=Exit
Selecting the "7" (NAND_Tools) starts doing an ECC Error Correcting Code) check of the flash blocks. After a while, I did a Hard-Reset to stop.
Do you suppose that 4 and 5 deal with the whole 1GB flash?
Probably the "download" is writing new data to the flash, and the "upload" is reading the data in the flash and writing that data to ... something external. Is that correct?
Has anybody been able to "dump" out the ROM (or entire Flash) contents? If so, we could dump the old ROM and the new ROM and compare, in the hope of discovering a way to "reverse" the "Upgrade".
Thanks, Gary |

| I have the C710 which is a European version with similar hardware base. I've been trying for days different methods to extract the ROM but to no avail. Tools I tried on the 23.75MB partition of the 'FlashDr' device include pdocread, bksamsungflash and bkondisk. I only got as far as dumping the files out of the boot part like coredll.dll, binfs.dll etc but nothing more. If someone - especially cmonex or itsme have any idea what should I do - please don't be shy... |

Do these deal with the "File Allocation Table" (FAT), or something else? In any case, what would they be used for?
4=Download FAT Raw 5=Upload FAT Raw |
