Have NOT yet hacked the MIO. Installed a Transcend 4MB SD card.
Would like to add ( after reading the posts) nex160.zip for a mod type winamp MP3 player.
Its only a cab file with no .exe included. ????????
Also;if I add mp3s straight to the SD card ,they all do not play or
view in the MP3 player.
Can't find an install thread. I assummed just unzip, extract and run a setup file on the SD.

Any advice? Using as a player plugged into my car stereo. Sounds great and now no need for bunch of cds.
thanks

First of all, welcome to the Forum.

.cab files are sort of like zip files (WinZip can read them but the file extensions look weird, too long an explanation for this post), except that they automagically install when "opened". Here's what you do (this procedure applies to almost any .cab installer):

(1)Set the "read only" attribute on the file by (on your PC) right-clicking on it, select 'properties', and check 'read only'. The reason for this is that after a .cab file does it's install on your PPC, it will delete itself unless this attribute is set.
(2) Copy the file over to your SD card. I prefer to put all my installation files in a folder called \Install, but YMMV.
(3) Unlock your Mio using the 2-button unlock method (see the Index/FAQ).
(4) Insert the SD card into the Mio and do a soft reset (paper-clip in hole), remembering to hold down the 2 buttons so you get back to the "unlocked" state.
(5) Tap on the Windows icon in the lower left Taskbar, select Progarms\Windows Explorer, and navigate to the folder where you stored the .cab file (the SD card is the "Storage Card").
(6) Highlight the .cab file and tap it with your stylus.
(7) You will be asked if you want to install the program in \Programs, don't do it (that area is in the internal Mio flash memory and you'll rapidly run out of space unless you have the rare 2-gig model). Navigate to the Storage Card and install it there.
(8) For now (there is a way to write a new directory, but this post is getting long enough...), just use the default directory that it shows you in the dialog box in the lower left (WinCE authors like to include the company name in the Folder name). Click OK
(9) The file will now install, and a shortcut will usually be placed in the \Programs list accessed from the <windows> key.

Now the fun begins - read the paragraphs in the Index/FAQ after the 2-button unlock explanation, you may be about to play "guess the dll". Knock yourself out.

Re MP3 files: They need to be added to a folder labeled \MP3, then the built in Mio MP3 player will find them.

Not all programs install via the .cab method - some install via Activesync, where you run the .exe program on your PC and, with an Activesync connection established, you'll be prompted.

Thankyou very much for the time and effort.!!!!!!
Well, I wanted to avoid fixing the kitchen sink tomorrow, so time to unlock, set up the program and go from there.
Love this thing. Son has a Garmin - no comparison with the quick recalculate on Mio.
Pretty aware of .cab files and all etc. Just suprised you can't just
load a bunch of MP3 on the SD card and have them play.Do it with my thumb drive.
Let you know.

Problems. Cab file-read only, install/dir on SD, tap on explorer and
winamp starts an install defaulting immediately to Program files.
Immediately at the bottem menu I see " installing " " . Move up to the SD directory but nothing happens. Tried several times and even let it run.
Just stayed like that and didn't do anything. Tried through an active sync connection and no go.

???????

You need to confirm the install directory by opening the keyboard on the taskbar.
It's the little icon with the pencil in it to the right.

Click on it and select keyboard. A small keyboard will open now on top of your installing cab file. You will now need to set the focus back to the cab file by clicking on it once.
After that push the enter button on the keyboard.
The program will continue installation.

You can now close the keyboard by clicking the same icon on the taskbar.

Well Thanks again my friend. I've been fooling with CPU's since DOS and Win 3.1 and never had such a time to install this. Finally did it through the "run" SETTING however, and I've successfully installed HCP
or whatever its called and then uninstalled.
I use winamp on my laptop all the time. This winamp ( and the other program) will let me see and load the mp3's but for the life of me they will not play. Everything running off a 4gb Transcend SD.

Getting older so the little buttons are hard to see. Just wanted
an MP3 player in the car connected to my stereo with the gps.
Comming close to sticking this in the glove compartment and thats it.

Go figure?
