Hey guys,
I recently purchased a C310x after hearing about all the great reviews about it (and of course abilities to hack it). I have not received the unit yet but from what I have been told, most of the newer units are the 1 GB models (which means 35 MB of free space when you get it).
I want to get an SD card so I can put Iguidance, movies, and music on there. I'm looking at something in the 4 GB range. I looked around the forums and did see some options (some people got theirs off ebay and it worked, others got the ridata) but I need to know exactly which models work and if there's good deals on any. I know it has to be non-SDHC but those are hard to find in the 4 GB range. I read that others got theirs off ebay as well, and theirs DID NOT work in the mio. I might just bite and get a 2 GB instead so I KNOW it will work; do you guys find 2 GB enough storage space for additional software and music? I really want to add some space so I can really get the full experience of this GPS unit. Thanks a lot guys; this forum is great! |

The only 4 Gbyte SD officially tested by Mio in their list is the Transcend 150x 4Gbyte version. Newegg had them a few weeks ago for just under $50, including shipping.
Once you get into installing software you may not stop... although you will find that ultimately you may be limited (in installing software) in your options since so far it looks like the version of WinCE in the Mio ROM (v4.2, build 1088) will not support .Net 2.0, which is a requirement for a good amount of the latest good stuff out there.
It also depends on how many MP3's and movies (AVI, MPEG) that you want to carry around with you. The movies/TV episodes/etc can run several hundred megabytes each.
IMHO, spend the extra $20, get the 4 Gig. |

Thanks a lot for the reply Supremo; I read a lot of your posts here and they all gave me a good understanding of what the Mio can do. How much does the SD card speed affect performance? I don't mind the slow writing times (I mean you're going to install programs only once and I can wait) but I'm worried about the slow READING times of the Mio. I bit and bought a 2 GB Kingston from buy.com because there was a very good deal on it which ends today and I can always buy something bigger in the future if I need it. My only concern is that it has slow read/write speeds.
Are there any alternatives to the 4 GB card other than the Transcend? There's MANY 4 GB SD cards on ebay for very good prices but as you said yourself Supremo, many are not compatible. I know I'll eventually need more than 2 GB (Iguidance's NAVTEQ maps alone are around 1 GB+) but for now, it should be sufficient. My guess is that pretty much all cards < 4 GB are compatible with the Mio? |

| As I posted in several other places on the forum, I purchased the Ridata 4GB Pro 150x card and it works well. What you DON'T want to buy is any SD card that is labeled as an SDHC card. They most definitely will NOT work in the Mio! |

| Thanks geebekazoo, that's the one I was talking about in my first post. I'll have to check it out. I just can't justify spending like $50 on a SD card at the moment though, especially when I just spent around $175 for the Mio. I guess the 150x speed and 4 GB storage space is REALLY worth it in the long run though. |

| Happened to have the model numbers of the 4Gb cards? I also want one but don't want to purchase the wrong model. This way I will be sure to get the right item. Thanks in advance! |

| I was thinking about a 4gb too, till a few days ago I just found out MIO supports FAT way better than FAT32. I have a 2gb formatted to FAT32 initially, and I was having all kinds of weird stuff, like the SD card cannot be recognized 3 out 10 times I put it in and I have to re-extract and re-insert, iGuidance runs extremely slow, etc. Then I formated the SD card to FAT and put exactly the same stuff back on, and it's really a great difference. Everything runs smooth and fast without a hiccup. The problem is FAT is only limited to 2gb, and I don't think we can partition the SD card into 2x2gb and MIO would still recognize it. Any thoughts? |

| Can anyone confirm if that's true? That fat runs much smoother than fat32? Because then I'll just buy 2 2GB cards rather than a 4 GB. |

| Others have run the 4Gig 150x transcend in the WorldNav 3100 perfectly when no other card would work. You might give that a shot. Alternatively, is it possible to partition an SD card? |

| Are we talking about formatting the card via Mio or Windows? As far as mine goes, I formatted under Windows and everything seems good. Video plays smoothly and iGuidance and TomTom running normal. Initially I have a 4Gb card but it's the Transcend 4Gb normal speed I think and my god is it horrible...so it's sitting on my desk collecting dust *sigh* |

my .02
I formatted my 2gb card via a cardreader on my PC in fat32. Regarding size, 2gb fits around 5-6 movies. If you like movies then the 4gb should be considered... |

nimaim, I'm using this 4 gig 150x Topram SD card, with no problem, so far. It's a good buy, selling for about $38 now, comes with USB 2.0 card reader |

| Unfortunately, shipping jacks up the price to $50, but it comes with a card reader as you said, so it may very well be worth it. I'll see what happens when my slow 2 GB card arrives along with my Mio. Thanks. |

Reading times are not that important. You won't notice that big of a difference between most of the cards, except the very slow ones. Ofcourse a 150x will be quicker than a 60x, but it will not have a major effect on your navigation.
You might see a very slight difference in route calculation. |
