i'm still a little confused on this.
i have not installed mio transfer hack on the pc. i have tried both the unlock script by gpsgator and the skin changer with unlock function by garygid. both work great. i'm currently using the script from a sd card, via the menu/vol method
do i still need to install mio transfer hack? does the mio transfer hack do the same thing as the script/skin changer unlock? would it be beneficial / wise to get the 310 back to stock (no hacks), then install the hack (replace the .exe, etc), then use the script / skin changer? isn't all 3 essentially the same which is unlocking the mio?
could someone please shed light on this.

| anyone? is there a advantage in using mio transfer hack instead of the script/unlocker? the only thing i have installed so far is activesync. i also have a card reader to move mp3s, movies, etc..., |

If you used garygid's skin changer with the unlock function, there is no need to install Mio Transfer Hack. When you connect your Mio C310x to your computer using the USB cable, and if garygid's unlock program resides on your SD Card as C310auto.exe, it will automatically unlock your Mio for you. So now you can move any programs from your computer to the Mio C310x.
All the Mio transfer hack program did was to move files to the Mio C310x which was not possible to do with the original Mio transfer program (except for moving mp3 files).
So if you are starting out with a brand new Mio C310x, here's what I'd do ...
1) Make sure I can connect to the Mio C310x using my computer
2) Download and install the latest patch from Mio http://www.tiny.cc/Mio_Patch_00002
3) Do a "Soft Reset"
4) Follow garygid's post to install the SkinChanger program on an SD Card using a SD Card Reader
5) Download your favorite skin to the Skins directory of the SD Card
6) Insert your SD Card into your Mio C310x and turn ON your Mio
7) If you put the C310auto.exe file on the root folder of your SD Card, it will now unlock your Mio C310x
8) Backup your original "Data.zip" using garygid's skin changer program
9) Install the new skin using the same skin changer program
10) Do another "Soft Reset" on your Mio C310x
11) Mount your Mio C310x in your favorite car/truck and take it for a spin :-) |

edit out my complaint about not being able to use the USB once loading the unlock hack. I found out that MapReceiver had to be active for MioTransfer to communicate with the unit, once I was told that, I placed a shortcut for it on my desktop and now I no longer have any problems at all.
I think there's not a better way to use your Mio than to get that unlock hack, and add to it the skin changer!!! Mine works great. |

| Mio C310x only has USB 1.1 while you can get a USB 2.0 card reader for US$15 or free. The difference is you end up with more free time playing with C310x istead of waiting for any file transfer to finish at 1/10 speed. They say time is money, so I'd buy time with money. ;-) |

There are two ways to write to the SD card:
1. use a card reader/writer (faster), or
2. use Mio Transfer (or Hack) on the PC and either be in
the Mio MainShell or (on an unlocked Mio) double-tap the
"MioTransfer" link on the desktop to start the MIO's end
of the Mio Transfer - and use the supplied USB cable.
If you use ActiveSync on the PC, the companion program
on the fully unlocked MIO is started via the "ActivSync"
desktop link there.
Doing the Unlock function with the Skin-Changer installs
those programs and links. Neither of them is an "unlock",
but just a method to transfer data. ActiveSync can also
install some programs that have an installer that runs on
the PC and expects to transfer things to the MIO via the
ActiveSync "connection". |
